A soul without pride or cruelty . A beautifully told tale . Thankyou David.

So long ago. Thanks for your kind comment. John Elliot was the inspiration and moving force behind this. He would be glad to know there are other kindred spirits who love Ivor Gurney s music and words.

I have read that this programme was not networked by TV, but shown only in the West Country. I think that was a great shame as it deserves a wide audience. I agree with the previous comment, incredibly beautiful. I am currently reading Kate Kennedy's biography of Ivor Gurney so have kept the latter part of this programme to watch later once I have completed my reading. Many thanks for making this available.

What a fragile delicate soul this man had ,to really love nature and be thrown into the hell of war must have been devastating for him and so many young men ,so many misunderstood geniuses end up in the asylum ,just heartbreaking .There is a connection with the poem (The road not taken ) it was written for Edward Thomas , Ivor wrote music for and loved his poems, Edwards wife visited Ivor in the asylum ,unfortunately Edwards decided to take the road to war and was killed ,he was 39 with three children and didn’t have to go ,incredibly sad .

Excellent, well done on a brilliant production, a valued addition to Gurney devotees.

It's taken decades to give Gurney his just reputation. So glad you liked this effort by John Elliot in 1983. Later in 1997 we made Stars in a Dark Night which is very different but you can find it on my Dave Goodland KZbin site.

@@davegoodland9069 Thanks I'll check it out next chance I get, looking forward to it. I was lucky enough to tape 'A soldier and a maker' when it was on Radio 4, and posted it here : m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXaUfWeAbdelb80

Very charming..a simple and pure elegiac presentation of Mr Gurney's rather short life..and no hyperbolic postmodern garbage that floods this medium..

Thanks. The world was simpler even in 1983. Take care. Dave Goodland.

I don’t suppose anyone could tell me the name of the piece that starts at around 19:12? Thank you so much for making this available to watch! I really appreciate it!

David asked me if I know what the piece is -- I'm not sure, but it might be a violin sonata. Let me give this more thought. Pam
