Amitabh was too big a star at that point in time to play a son gone astray to Dilip Kumar. Movie flopped. Certain roles are tailored for certain actors. Can never imagine SRK doing Sunny paaji's role in Ghayal or Rishi Kapoor doing what SRK did in Baazigar.

The problem was that Amitabh's stardom was waning at that time, he was "finished", it would've been better if someone else would've played the part of the son and both would have received the same credit and possibly his stardom would've revived much earlier.
