Our local fish and chip shop was run by a Maltese man named Jerry. My siblings and I used to make up lots of funny jokes about Jerry. These were the days when fish and chips were wrapped in grease proof paper, and then tons of newspaper.

The only thing missing from the old school fish and chips was a cigarette in the mouth!! I remember back in the days, this one owner used to smoke whilst he was filleting. I asked him what the fk was he doing... he replied by saying, relax it’s gonna be smoked! True story 😂

Thats so true. When I worked in a bakery in the early 90's the boss would be rolling sauage rolls while smoking. The ash would go in them and everything. I think the secret back then in the recipe was that you didn't wash your hands.

The first Australian fish and chip shop is often credited to Greek migrant Athanasias Comino, who opened his shop in 1879 on Sydney’s Oxford Street. I remember in the 1970's how Fish and Chip shops would wrap up your order in Newspaper.

@@wozzielfc401 Hahaha classic. Yeah my previous name was kinda cringe and was 'Aussie Wog' so some mates just told me to change it to Waussie. I've seen quite a few people with this username, but of course there are variants in the way they spell it.

That was gold. Funny af and relatable too.Who else but us Wogs ai? Hahaha. This reminds me of a shop near our old high school in Sydney's west, everyday before and after school the boys would buy burgers and fish & chips and things from there. The owner was an old Greek gentleman.A nice and funny bloke. He'd tell us all kinds of jokes that would crack us up. This brought back happy memories. He would put a fish patty and some tomato, lettuce and sauce and that was it. For only a dollar it was a bargain and it tasted good too. His shop was like a hangout for the us students before and after school. The bustop a lot of us caught the bus home was across the road opposite the shop. So much good times and laughs. I miss high school. Stuff like this reminds me of those good ol' days. Man i wish i could go back to then but knowing what i know now. Loved this

haha ,, classic .. As a kid I used to trade lemons from our trees in the yard to the local wog for a feed.of fish and chips He was a grumpy old bugger but if you got his good side you could feed a large family for a couple of bucks . Absolute legend and so was his missus who also ran as bouncer to the attached pinny parlour. Any crap and you would be shown the the door by your ear , and more than likely have your chip serving size and quality downgraded

I worked in one of the busiest Greek Carvery's in the city for 4 yrs and every second word was Malaka.. Haha.. This is so effen spot on.. nice work bruv. Ya got our boss George who looks a lot like gold chain.. Axar the Cyprian with the mullet over the fryer.. Greg with the comb over sitting down reading.. the young gun battering the scallops.. Haha.. The only cliché missing is Angelo the money man and books, he was the serious intense one always brooding over paperwork, seemed angry, but was a top bloke. Some of my best memories.. I miss that crew so much. Im a full bore skippy, but it felt like family. If any of you Malakaz from Emmanuel's find this, its Macka. God bless you all. Filia. Miss you hectic crazy fellas.. Yasou. I used to work in Steve's fish shop (actually it was called Manuel's but the guy out front was Steve) out the back with Manual (Steve's Dad) and his Dad's mate cleanin and scaling fish and making chips. I just stopped going one day and Ive always felt terrible about it. No one else would give me a job, but he did. If you ever read this Steve thanks mate. You and your Dad were kind people.

These days are long gone but what memories and nostalgia they give us - My little country town in Australia also had the local fish and chip shop- run by Manual- his family living out the back where the cooking was- Remembering getting 3 potatoe cakes and minimum chips - soaked in vinegar and black sauce - plain salt - wrapped in newspaper - we poked a hole in the top and munched on the contents as we wandered back to school - wonderful days- there's a lot of us out there who lived these special times - 😊😊😊😊😊

As a Greek Australian I can concur this is exactly what happened at every Greek take away I’ve been to. Just curious as to why the old man is not reading the ellinikos kirikas newspaper. It’s a real shame that these take aways are all but extinct. Thankfully in the southern highlands there’s still some left but still.

I was waiting in a chip shop in the uk once just like this, in amongst a mega inter family argument I heard a massive scream, some polish chick serving fainted and hit the deck. Turned out the old bloke had slipped and put his arm straight into the frier. I just stood up and looked at him in the eyes. He just said ‘not again’ and started wrapping it in glad wrap. Strange night. I drove him to hospital. Never got my fish and chips and never went back.
