My former (Chinese) co-workers loved that no means no in northern Europe. In China they were used to getting asked 15 times in a row whether they wanted anything to eat, even though they kept saying no. Here it's just, "Do you want some?" - "No." - "OK." and that's it. At first they thought we were very uncaring, but after a while they realised that you can have deep, meaningful conversations, when you don't have to spend 60% of your time rejecting food that you have already rejected 14 times before.

When my siblings and I were at school, they used to give us afternoon tea when they had to pick us up from school. It's not just the Greeks, Italians, Croatians, Serbians and the Macedonians that insist of feeding their guests, kids, friends and relatives when they come around, pretty much ALL of Europe and even parts of Asia do it too. Back in the 80s, my Grandma’s minister was making the holidays rounds to visit anyone who had invited him. Mostly 1st-2nd generation grandmas. He had 3-5 churches every Sunday. That’s a lot of conversations like this. When he showed up, he begged us not to make him sit or take food. My grandma was a great baker, but she didn’t force anything on him. My Mom also acted as his security to make sure he wasn’t attacked by the Aunts. He was so thankful and less bloated by the time he left.

You guys crack me up every time. I wish I had an ethnic mum that would feed my like that. I am so frigging hungry after watching that. Especially that first table full of food. Any ethnic mothers want to adopt me? I will eat everything you cook. No problem.

My mother's maltese neighbours were exactly like this. I used to come home laden with bowls of food...food was amazing, but I had to return so many bowls. haha...
