That's a nice review but as a Pole I feel obligated to correct few things stated here. P-64 isn't used by our military for a long time now. Shortly after it's introduction to People's Army it became obvious that in overall it's a good gun for self defense and concealment but not for it's intended purpose as a military pistol. Mainly due to it's strong recoil, short line of sight and low mag capacity. Therefore WITU (Military Institute of Armament Technology) started to work on the new construction, which lead to P-70 and P-75 prototypes with aluminum frame and double stack 14 rounds mags, but they were never introduced to mass production. Ultimately it was replaced by it's bigger younger brother P-83, which is widely used by Polish Military to this day. Interesting fact, it's better and preffered construction over it's successor WIST-94 which is big POS. And P-64 is still used by many our police units. That is all :)

1:10 not true. 9X18 is designed to be the most powerful cartridge in a strait or simple blowback operation. the actual bullet is slightly wider than 9X19. 9mm Mak is 9.27mm wide while 9mm Luger is 9.17mm. this is caused by the russians measuring the diameter of the bullet in correspondence to the lands of the rifling in the bore; whereas 9mm Luger is measured in correspondence to the grooves of the rifling.

Of particular interest to me since I learned the BATFE classification. In Md you have to pay serious extra money for 'various things' to get an HQL - before you can consider buying a handgun. (Even if you bought 100 handguns before Oct 2013) However there is no HQL requirement if its classified ACR . Based on the original review I found one at my LGS. A 1973 , it looks to be unissued

The P-64's are wonderful shooters after investing a few bucks into a spring kit and 15 or 20 minutes of time.. Of the three P-64's I have owned, not a single hick-up. No exaggeration, no jams of any kind whatsoever. I've put hundreds of home cast lead slugs, using trimmed 9MM brass using published 380 powder data. They make wonderful pocket carry pistols especially for old school guys like me that can't mentally deal with plastic guns.

Sootch thanks for taking the time to do a video on this little known but fantastic little pistol. For those considering one but is scared of the heavy trigger pul in DA, all the springs from a Walther ppk works in this Gun, i just went ahead and bought a walther Spring kit from Wolf before Wolff made a kit for the P64 , it turned it into a fantastic trigger pull in both DA and SA, and yes the Poles like the Czechs take pride in their Pistols. Mine was made in in 1975, i bought it at a Gun Shop here in PA about 6 years ago for $169.95. Great little pistol accurate and fun to shoot.

This video is exactly everything I needed to hear. I was deciding between the P-64, CZ83, CZ70, and the Makarov for my carry and this pretty much sealed me on the P-64. I had mistakenly assumed that the safety was only a two stage which was making me lean towards the CZ70. Knowing what I now know, however, and preferring the 9x18 ballistically, I'm going to be picking up a P-64 and soon. Thanks for the video and God bless.

Nicely done video! I own one of these guns, and a few things I would mention are 1) it hurts to shoot it because of its narrowness and recoil is absorbed by the bone at the base of the thumb, 2) the spring inside the trigger housing sometimes slips from its post, but can be slipped back on if gun is taken apart, 3) acccuracy cannot be overstated and is because of fixed barrel and wide trigger (single action trigger pull is the best of any pistol I've ever fired, period; double action is the worst), 4) this is not just a nice gun, but as you have said, it is a beautiful gun! Thank you.

As far as the hard pulling double action trigger. Simply don't shoot it that way. I've carried mine daily for years now. When I've had to use it to kill possums and coyotes inside chicken coups and in the barn I just pull the hammer back on first shot. It's the same way with the old Smith and Wesson .38 special I keep in the truck. Using it single action it's as accurate as a rifle. Double action I can't hit anything. But I only carry the one P64 and have learned it's feel so if it has to protect my life maybe it'll be instinct with no fumbling around with it.

These sweet little guns come to the consumer with cosmoline stuck in various places. After removing the grips, place in boiling water to melt any residual cosmoline. Remove it and it will dry immediately from the heat. Lubricate all trigger, hammer, mainspring and sear contact areas with a Moly lubricant. Moly Disulfide even comes in powder form. My DA trigger went from 20+ lbs to under 10 lbs and the safety decocker function was greatly improved. The SA remained the same. I can’t see why this would not work for the PP and variants to lighten DA trigger pull.

I will say, great investment ... excellent double taps, second best [as of a few years ago at least] concealed platform, and ultra reliable. So as for the recoil I'm actually going to make this a little bit more complicated. I considered two types of recoil, snap and kick is the way I consider it. So after I got my 1972 polish p64 and trained extremely expensively with it I noticed major differences with other guns regarding that dynamic
@darksim_000 Жыл бұрын
It has a high snap vs the recoil-kick-straight-forward, if that makes sense. So using a Glock is a little more stable but has more frontal back-based power whereas this gun is the inverse but it still extremely excellent to use it's my favorite of all time and will remain my weapon of choice

Good video and I agree with everything you stated. It seems when I ordered a couple of them they were closer to $100. Wish I'd ordered more as an investment. The one I carry concealed I had coated because of pocketing in hot humid summer would cause the outside of barrel to rust. But they're built as well as any pistol I've ever had. I don't spend a lot of time cleaning it just every once in a while open it and blow it out. It has never jammed and several times had to pull it quickly as varmint control for livestock protection and pocket lint flew on the first shot. The insides of the barrel doesn't rust so it's either lined or has a plating. I don't know about ammo pricing because I ordered cases when I seen how reliable these pistols were. If it's still reasonable and easily accessible I'd recommend one to anyone as a everyday conceal pistol.

I was given one of these by a friend on my 21st birthday and I quickly fell in love with it! Other than the double action trigger pull it shoots great and is super accurate. Although I will warn that with mine the safetly lever snapped in half at the hammer block some time, probably when using the decocker. Finding a replacement was a little bit of a pain too. Now I always ride the hammer foreward so it doesnt slam against the safety lever.

The P-64 is a great little pocket carry pistol. I've had mine for about 4 years (it was $179 when I bought mine!) and I pocket carry it regularly in a simple little Uncle Mike's pocket holster. Replacing the main spring makes a HUGE difference in the DA trigger pull, and it lightens the SA pull just a hair (probably takes it down to 4 lbs or just a bit lighter in SA). Make sure that you test it thoroughly with the ammo that you intend to carry in it. I like Hornady Critical Defense, but it won't operate properly in my particular P-64. Instead, I use Silver Bear hollow points in it for carry use.

I just ran into your video about the P-64. The pistol that you are reviewing and referring to as a Makarov is actually just a plain a Polish P-64. Since I was collecting C& R's I purchase three Makarov's about 15 years ago. My three are stamped Makarov. I also bought 5 - P-64's which are just that, a Polish P-64. I'm not intending to degrade your post, but I went through this many time with C&R collectors that I knew at that time. I just thought I would throw that in. Very nice presentation though.

Excellent video! I love my P-64 so much I went ahead and purchased another. My first one cost just $149.00 from J&G back in the day. The bluing was as superb as any of the best I have seen and a tad bit better to be honest. I replaced the springs and now its a gem in D.A. The 2nd one I purchased also had a beautiful mirror blue like finish, I also replaced the springs on that one. I have a PPK made in the US it cost me over 600.00 and the P-64, (both of them) actually out shoot it in terms of accuracy, and that my friends pisses me off to no end!. I also may add that the 9 X 18 round hits harder than a .380. If this gun were made in the US under the same standards you would pay at least $600.00. They would still be worth buying for its quality, accuracy, ease of breakdown, and I consider it safe on half cock. Its my constant companion and always graces my night stand. I have run at least 800 rounds through mine and the slide now its actually as sooth as silk and most of all the ammo is dirt cheap, a big plus in my opinion! My other P-64 is a safe queen because I want to keep it pristine as it continues to go up and up in value. My only regret is that I did not buy 5 of them at $149.00 out the door!

I have never been one to complain about a heavy trigger pull but this thing was just too much to accurately shoot in double action. I carry this pistol a lot. I have replaced both the slide and hammer springs, making it far better comfortable and reliable. I'm a big guy, so the weight doesn't bother me. Shooting my much lighter allow FEG SMC9X18 is more uncomfortable to shoot.

Is the trigger guard steel or plastic ?? Thanks !!!

It's all steel. Only the grips are plastic.

Sckarekrow A slid bite is a severe pinch or an actual wound. A Slide burn is friction discomfort. No sharp edges are usually involved in a slide "burn".

Solid review as always. I own a PA-63 but have been on the look out for a good condition 64 for a while. Once you get the springs dialed in on these guys, they run as reliable as some of the $500+ handguns out there. But they do have to be tweaked a bit. For under $300... its a fun project. Thanks again sootch00

Thank you for this video. I found it very helpful when selecting a pistol for home defense. Part of my consideration was the cost of the weapon itself versus the workmanship, durability, etc. I prefer an all steel weapon, and have no problem with military surplus in very good to like new condition I also considered the cost of ammunition for practice, as well as ballistic characteristics of various hollow point rounds. In the end, I chose a P-64, and am very happy with my decision. I ordered the Wolff springs, and installed them per the method shown in your other video, also very good.
