I've had mine for almost 2 years. My sister has the Sig and my Brother in law has the Rock Island. I run thousands of bulk rounds through the Chiappa. Stove pipes are minimal compared to their pistols with the premium ammo.not to mention I bought mine slightly used for $100. This isn't a piece of crap. It is a nice inexpensive alternative. I'm actually keeping my eye out for another one used.

I just purchased the 1911-22 tactical pistol. This pistol shot flawless. I used the federal auto match bulk box ammo. To one glitch through the 50rds. That includes fast and slow shooting. The slide is very smooth and the mag's worked perfect. For the $244.00 that I paid delivered with the fake supressor I could not ask for anything more. I would say the Chiappa got their act together and fixed the problems other shooters were having. Great video. Thanks

My local gun store sent me home with one of these to try out today, and so far I haven't had a single problem. I only have 60 rounds through it, which isn't much but I just had to see what Sootch had to say about it.

This is the most thorough review I have found on this firearm. Thanks for the info. I just traded a heritage rough rider 22 for one of these. So far I'm very pleased. No malfunctions, and with winchester bulk 1280fps hollow points, it's eating them up! Keep up the good work Sootch!

Hey Sootch, I purchased mine about 6 months ago after watching your review. Having fired over 800 rounds to date, I will agree this gun runs better with faster ammo. Initially, with some slower ammo I did experience several FTF and some stove pipes. Moving on to faster ammo in the 1400 FPS area I have had excellent results. Something I would like to add to your video; at the 5:40 mark of your video you mention the "Keyed Safety" on the rear, right side of the slide; I have found this as an excellent feature beyond just an additional safety it also allows "Dry Firing" without damage to the firing pin. I also have to agree with you about the accuracy of this "Fixed Barrel" gun. It's as accurate as my Ruger MK II "Bull Barreled" Target pistol and a lit more fun to shoot. So, thank you for your excellent review on a FUN little gun...!

I remember my father saying he loved to get ahold of two of these bad boys. Regardless one day I'm getting him his twin set with a cleaning kit and my mom one of these, Street heaters are 500 but these are going for a good deal with the SN# much prefer ghost so it doesnt come down to a vote in the court or having to appeal as to whom I gave so and so to. Would have to act a little slow in that case

Great review Sootch, have heard so many comments both pro and against when it comes to Chiappa. For sure it sounds like their 22's get better with a break in period. Was initially interested in their m9 replica, and a lot of the reviews made it look like the gun shot better after putting a few rounds through it. One thing I do enjoy about Chiappa is their prices are reasonable, and they have that whole replica thing going on with the m9, m1, and 1911, which if you get a good one it can make for a pretty cool experiance. Again keep up the great work!

Picked one up heavily used, and very poorly maintained. Ran 10 rds through with no issues. Gave it a good thorough cleaning, and have about 200 rounds to stress test it with tomorrow. Sounds like lots of folks have had rough luck with their. We will see. **update, took it out to shoot, trigger wouldnt reset without tapping the hammer between each shot. Pulled it apart, cleaned a TON of sand out of it, and had to alter a poorly machined part in the trigger mechanism. Now runs like a top. Rear sight went MIA somewhere in my car though.... so thats gone. Fun plinker, but i dont really trust it to carry around in a holster chambered.

got over 2000 rounds on mines. here's a summary of my experience: barrel bushing broke at around 1500 rounds, slide lock notch on slide is worn, sights flew off and had to be replaced, a lot of slide play. other than that still performing and 95+% reliable on bulk ammo, 100% on cci mini mags. mags work fine. would buy again if i find a good deal.

I had this pistol for a few months and then sold it. The bushing was impossible to take off half of the time. The rear sight would not stay put even when the screw was all the way in, it would back out. The magazines are poor, 1 of them was very rough to get into the mag well. That thing would jam like crazy. So glad that I sold it.

I know this is a pretty late reply but I found one MAJOR flaw with this pistol. The mag release button is VERY fragile! The mag release is held in with screw on a spring. To install you rotate counter clockwise to put the lever arm in the button itself and then insert the piece into the mag well then turn the screw a half turn clockwise. What this does is sets that screw into little channel that holds the mag release button in place. Only down fall, the groove the mag release button screw guides on is VERY thin. I released my magazine today and the screw shot out. I was wondering how that could have happened and the the little tooth that retains the mag button into the housing forcefully pushed through the frame itself. This gun was good for me for about 1000 rounds in its life time. Mind you, I would never dump more than 100 rounds in one sitting(10 mags) then I would clean it after each use and then the last time I used it, i got constant stove pipes and jams. The gun would not cycle a round. After further investigation, the breach itself has gave away and chipped a piece out. Effectively losing the power it needs to kick that next round out. The two cheap pieces are the downfall of this pistol. Was good while it worked but really sucked when it didnt. After REALLY looking at this pistol, the quality is lacking in some areas. I would not recommend as a budget EDC.

I wouldn't mind having a dedicated .22 1911 and I actually was looking at a Browning .22 1911 at a gun show a while back, but at like almost 600 bucks it was a little out of my price range at the time and really still is lol. So this Chiappa seems like a decent high value option for a dedicated .22 1911 at 1/2 the cost of a Browning or almost 1/3 the price of a Kimber .22 1911. Great review Sootch

I bought one about a year ago and had a lot of problem with stovepipes and various other malfunctions with my Chiappa 1911 .22. I figured I had bought a paperwight and put it away. Recently I got the manual out and read it to see if maybe I was the problem. They said that one must use High Velocity of at least 1280fps ammo for the best results. I bought Federal and Winchester ammo rated at 1280 fps and that weapon fired all afternoon with nary a problem. I also had a couple of GSG Firefly .22s that I had experienced some problems with and decided to try this high powered ammo with them. Bingo! They functioned flawlessly. The problem was the ammo all the time. It's now all I use with all my .22 caliber pistols.

Absolutely! I can't shoot the rifles but using the left eye with the pistols is possible. With practice, I'll get back in the bull. It is a total bummer getting around with one eye as can be imagined. 34 years of Army ranges and civilian shooting and I never even saw a problem with troops or myself. A few rounds through the chiappa and well - you know.

Blowback pistols like the Chiappa, Walther P22, and etc are generally LESS accurate. The barrel is fixed to the frame vs locked into the slide like a standard 1911, Glock, etc. The sights are on the slide and that's where you want the barrel to lock into. Easy example would be to point a P22 down range and grab the slide and try to wobble it left and right. You are moving the sights without moving the poi.

If the mag doesn't pull the slide back when empty does that mean you dry fire by mistake and can cause damage to the firing pin?

Interesting. . . Necessity for a proper hold to function. Reminds me of a range experience in the Coast Guard with the 1911. One of the pilots brought a 22 automatic pistol (don't know the model) and he could tear up targets with it, but could not do much with the 1911. If you are just shooting the Chiappa because it looks cool (and I think it does) then limp-wrist failure to function is a defect. But let's follow the lead of the information technology field and make a "defect" into a "feature". Definitely a plus for training.

The prong safety is a hammer block. It turns a small cylinder that extends a little further than the firing pin so when the hammer falls it hits the cylinder before it hits the firing pin.

I'm not sure which model my grandpa owns but between the two of us we've put about 800 rounds through ours. We get some stovepipes and fail to feed and the magazines have expanded so they don't drop when you hit the mag release so you have to pull them out. Other than that it works pretty well. Considering Andrew J lost his eye to one I'm a bit weary of the model now but so far ours is performing pretty well.

I notice a few times (and you noted in your review) that the magazine did not always hold the slide back after the last round was fired - resulting in the occasional accidental dry fire. That's not good for a rimfire round like the .22 caliber. Do you think this could cause long term damage to one of these?
@StevewiththePbass
@StevewiththePbass 10 жыл бұрын
This is a good point! I would submit that it's a good practice to NOT let your gun dry-fire, but most modern .22lr designs are built with firing pin stops, so the pin can't fly far enough forward to damage the chamber. Damage is possible though. I have an Ithaca M49-R that's been rendered useless by a dented chamber

I just got mine last week, the first 6 shots did not go off, they hung up and did not chamber. I worked the slide back and forth manually for a few minutes than got it to run 100 shots of which 15 hung up... After close look the slide which goes forward to load a new shell was dragging against the top right portion of the magazine, so it was putting a drag on the slide. I filed just a little on the magazine top side to eliminate this drag. I also reamed the chamber entrance of metal burs and now seems to function mechanically better. I am going to take it out to the range and try again. Note: I do like this gun it's good looks which made me buy this gun and excellent sights which are very accurate when shooting.

I love mine! one thing that bears mentioning, on my .22, if you have the safety on, and you keep trying to pull the trigger several times, the safety catch will come down and the weapon will fire. I sent it back, but it came back the same way, so I just don't carry it with a round in the chamber, or with the hammer back and safety on.

This is how Chiappa describes the Chiappalloy: Chiappalloy is a die casting alloy developed by Chiappa Research and Development engineers and has been in continued development and application since 1987. Historically, zinc alloys have been an economic approach utilized in firearm production for over 50 years. However, this application was not without limitations. Typically alloy casted components are limited to the quality of metal finish with high porosity and were usually either plated or painted. Most alloy casted firearm components are limited to low pressure ammunition and are usually best suited for rimfire calibers. Chiappalloy has been developed to improve the strength, wear resistance and creep properties in the zinc alloy family. The alloys included in our unique blend include aluminum, copper, magnesium, and iron. This allows Chiappalloy to maintain casted components that are easily machined and finished to a bright level of polish with minimal porosity. Due to the high luster polish that can be obtained, Chiappalloy’s plating properties are enhanced, yielding beautiful Nickel & Gold (color) plated components. Chiappalloy can be black finished that matches well with conventional blued & black anodized aluminum components. This black finish is much more durable and appealing than that of zinc casted components that must be coated or painted. The black finish when applied to Chiappalloy is very durable and can easily be touched up with most commercially available “Cold Blue” gun products. In addition to the machining & finish attributes of Chiappalloy, this unique alloy has been developed to accurately replicate the weight of the replica firearms produced by Chiappa Firearms. For example, the Model 1911-22 feels very similar in weight and balance to the original 1911 chambered in .45 ACP.

My grandpa is 85 and has macular degeneration in his right eye so he's almost blind in it, but his left eye is pretty good. But other rifles he does pretty well.

Hi Sir. Well, whilst listening to the lecture regarding how sometimes it may not lock back on an empty slide - one thing I think would be good is to load the mag only to the amount it holds THEN count the rounds shot THEN check weapon to see if it is empty or not. It's better than damaging your firing pin. On another question - I know you only choose the best in durable products - I couldn't help but notice your watch - Could you please tell me what make & model it is sir? Thank You. Sincerely, JAMES

If this is like the GSG 1911 the alloy slide is soft and the slide lock back notch will cease to hold after about 600 rounds because the notch becomes worn. I wonder if this is the same? Update: I just bought one...

Great review. Ive had my eye on one of these for awhile but havent made my mind up. After seeing this review I think il go pick one up. Also people need to realize one of the hardest handgun calibers to perfect (as far as reliability and function) is the .22lr. This cartridge has yet to be mastered by anyone (accept the ruger mark series). Also you have to realize what you are getting for only $250. One question. Can you change out the sights or are they part of slide?

Bought one of the Chiappa 1911-22 a few weeks ago. It has NEVER been able to fire a complete magazine without jamming. I have used Winchester, Remington, and CCI ammo. The slide doesn't have enough force to load a round from the magazine into the chamber. It has been back to Chiappa twice, I just got it back a few minutes ago. I will shoot it this weekend to see if it works as it is supposed to. Not happy with it so far.

I'm looking at my "Key-Oppa" model 1911-22. On the side where it has MODEL 1911-22, under this mine reads: Chiappa Firearms Cal 22 LR HV Italy. I know what LR means, Long Rifle but what is HV? I can guess but I don't have a clue? High Velocity? Harry Vagina? Do you know? Mine is an older gun so maybe it was made in Italy? The only thing that I'm not truely happy with is the plastic magazine... I shouldn't complain because I knew this when I got it. It's been in my gun safe for years. I pulled it out to play on Thanksgiving day. My shooting range is my back porch so I can shoot anytime I want. Can't hear gunshots from my home when your not on the ranch... I'm the poster guy for high capacity mags. It would take 30 to 45 mins for a cop to get out here. I always remember this: When seconds matter the police are only a few minutes away! PERIOD!!!

Sootch, we are just misunderstanding each other I believe. I'm talking pistols that have sights not directly locked or attached to the barrel. And by no means am I saying the Chiappa is inaccurate. But any firearm that sights can be moved separately from the barrel will have a slight disadvantage. Just try moving the slide around especially in a well worn pistol. There can be a lot of "play" in the slide where the sight are which is isolated from the barrel. Essentially is like shooting a weapon

You should review the browning 1911-22, it is a favorite of mine. 85% of the original 45, and super smooth and very reliabile

I don't know, but I just don't feel comfortable with a zinc alloy frame and slide. Also, if the recoil spring is, purposely, weak, it might batter the frame over time. Other than that, it looks like something I might want to try.

Any gun that has crucial parts made of cast zinc is made cheap, there is only one reason to use cast zinc and that is because it costs less than steel or good aluminium. If it's a moving part it will wear much more quickly.

Nice review. Regarding the pistol if I was going to carry a 1911 style 22 I would rather be the compact Browning 1911 22. if we are going to use a small caliber why have a full size frame gun.

What ammo are you using? I have had this down at the range and almost every other shot stoves. I have talked to others and watched videos and most of the people tell you it is how you hold it to keep it from stoving....I would really like to know. I don't think it is how I hole it. I think it could be the mag feed spring, but that would be a guess. Thanks Rick

Rick your probably doing what is refered to as "limp wristing". When you are in fireing position try to keep a stiff wrist, as not to let the muzzle rise. If your not already doing so, try supporting your fireing hand with the other.

Nope....I have a couple of friends that are both in the police department. One is a firearm trainer...Both of them had the problem and It happened to the professional trainer several times in each mag he fired...it was too frequent to be me...and he didn't limp wrist it...It is the gun or the magazine I think. It might be the spring too so I am going to get a new one and order a couple more magazines, however when I went to the official Chiappa site they don't sell the mags....I will have to get them from other dealers.

use ammo with a higher velocity like the cci Stingers 1640 fps cheap stuff like federal bulk 1200 fps wont cut it in most 22lr semi auto handguns

Well I am just stubborn enough to get this thing to work with the cheap stuff too...Most of my ammo is CCI with at least 1400+ FPS...I still haven't ordered the mag or spring yet tho'....

If you don't mind sending it back to the company to have it re-worked. I had many feeding problems and misfires cause the firing pin wouldn't strike the shell hard enough. Not for me.

Sou fã das 22, porém as pistola que funcionam muito bem com qualquer munição são, GSG, CZ,Ruger, S&W e a ISSC, as outras vi muita falha.

The Ruger Mark III beats the hell out of anything made by Chiappa in quality, hands down (I've shot some Chiappas that were heinously bad). I would only buy Chiappa if you are concerned with having a training pistol that has the same feel as it's higher caliber counterpart.

I'd like it better if the internals were the same as the 1911. As well if it was made of something other than alloy. As always great video Sooch. Thanks for making them, I don't quite have the budget to go buy any firearm on a whim . I must carefully select .
