Hi Soph! I’m a nurse and just a little tip I learned when taking blood sugars, if you do it at the side of the finger it should be less painful and should bruise less. Also if your struggling to bleed squeeze from the top of your finger rather than close to the site, squeezing at the top encourages blood flow rather than constricting :) hope this helps!

I’m a nurse tech & can’t alcohol swab make it a little higher than normal? So you wipe with gauze to get the alcohol off first swipe of blood?

yesss, pricking at the side of the finger is always best!
@medikstudnt83952 жыл бұрын
@@alliemorgan22 on the ambulance we only use the swab once to clean the finger then that is all.. but that’s as per protocol for us. This all is very interesting to me, as being from Australia the readings are very different to ours
@elianabrinkerhoff76412 жыл бұрын
also you can hold your finger downward to let gravity help the blood flow! if your hands are cold warm them up first to get good blood flow. squeezing the pad and nail of your finger while poking the side should help it hurt less too!!

As a registered nurse in the emergency room, I’ve looked after many people who are coming in and get a new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Every single person struggles in the initial few weeks and in the adjustment period, and most feel they are ‘grieving’ in a way. Absolutely everything you are feeling is completely normal and valid and please know it will only get easier. All of the stuff you are finding tedious and time consuming now will eventually become automatic. Even the carb counting, you’ll eventually know those numbers off the top of your head!! I’m so excited for you to find your groove and if anyone is going to be amazing at this it’s you. Hang in there Soph, you’re incredible!

hi soph!!! i'm 21 soon and i've had t1 since I was 10! I'm 5 years on dex and 9 on a pump. of course i know how hard it is, but you seem to be doing super well and that's amazing. my first advice which is so so important is try to meet other t1's either online or in person, bc the burnout is real! no one other than a t1 completely gets it so it's so helpful to have them to talk to. also if u ever have trouble with insulin coming out of the needle even after holding the button, you can always draw it out with a syringe. that's what i do bc that always gives me problems! also arms are a great place to inject! and if you don't already, it's super important to check blood sugar before driving bc driving low can be super dangerous. also i love skittles and gummy worms for lows when i'm not home (esp with fun size packs from easter/halloween). and one more thing!! if you want to eat super healthy and low carb, go for it! but just bc you have t1 now, you don't have to:)) you can eat anything as long as you carb count and take insulin! i only avoid sugar soda and cereal (it sends me to 400 every time) but other than that i don't limit myself at all and my a1c's (the blood test to see how well you're doing) are always mid 6's! it is possible to be a good t1 and eat whatever you want:) i'm also so happy you have avery's support. you're killing it girl!

hey soph 💙 I don't know why I felt so addressed when you said that we should kindly write you advices in the comments. I've been watching every single one of your videos for a long time. I've been very busy with school lately, but when I saw on Tiktok what happened, I was really waiting for this KZbin video. I don't have diabetes. But my best friend was diagnosed when she was 10 years old. Back then I dealt with it a lot. and yes, at the beginning it is difficult, incredibly complicated and you have the feeling that it is the only purpose in life. But I can tell you it will be better! It's unbelievable how precisely you do everything and how much you listen to your body. I remember that from back then. My friend didn't want to listen to her parents at all. she didn't care and just wanted her life back. I’ve got the feeling that you‘ve already accepted it and understood it’s a part of your life now. I can't know for sure, of course, but it seems like you want to understand it quickly. And I can tell you you're doing it just right. try to understand your body, the diagnosis and everything that is new. It gets easier over time and you don't have to weigh your food or check your blood sugar every 2 hours. It becomes a part of you and everything will work again. The diagnosis is not your enemy but now your teammate. I know it sounds harsh but everyone only gets what they can take. and you saved someone else from dying from the disease because you can do it. You can do this and you have the support of Avery, your family and your incredible fighting spirit. Stay strong you deserve it. Your body is strong enough to overcome this. and you have almost overcome the worst phase. soon it will be more normal and you can put your focus in life back on things that are important to you. I had to tell you that :) Thank you for showing reality. you are a great role model!! (sorry for my english i’m from germany) Love, Lilith

I was diagnosed 4 years ago and I often had random low blood sugars. My doctors told me that it was because my pancreas was still releasing insulin randomly every so often. They called it the “honeymoon phase”. I’m not sure if you endocrinologist brought it up or if you are experiencing anything similar but if you are that may be why. This only happened to me for a short time after being newly diagnosed but it did cause low sugars quite often. You are doing so great! ❤️❤️❤️

I was diagnosed in November of 2015, I had just turned 15 in October! I wrote my sliding scale on an index card and laminated it with tape and put it in the pocket with the alcohol wipes, so I didn't have to search for it on my phone when I needed it!!!! I hope that helps you too if you decide to do it!!! I even wrote my Ketone dosage on it too until I had it memorized!!! It's still in there because I forget it sometimes even now 😅 I had a lot of short memory loss in my early days of my diagnosis!!! I was constantly telling and asking my mom if I had taken my insulin or not because I could never remember sometimes!! I have my moments now especially if I'm busy or stressed, but it's no where near like it was when I was first going through it!!! Keep it up you're doing great!!! 💜💜💗💗💗 Never hesitate to ask for advice or tips!!! I wish I had a fellow T1D as a friend or community of people who are T1D when I was diagnosed. I wouldn't have felt so different or alone, but I was so socially awkward and shy so I never got in touch with anyone!!! I think it's cool how all T1D are different, like I take my active insulin at night so it was a shock to see others take it in the morning!!! One last thing! I prep my needle with just 2 units!! It saves a least one unit, I don't remember being told 3? My doctor & mom showed me how to prep it and I remember it being 2 when I was diagnosed so I wouldn't quote me 🤷♀️ 😅🤣 (last last thing lol.) Whenever I'm about to do something active, like I like dancing so my endocrinologist told me if my blood sure is low (around like where yours was) to eat or drink something before so you won't drop!! Intense active activities causes low blood sugars!!! But only do that if you're working out or doing something that could cause it to drop!! I would drop jumping on the trampoline so I had to drink juice before I did! I hope this helps you and anyone else whose been diagnosed recently!!!! 💗💜

Hey Soph, I have had T1D for 27 years (diagnosed at 7) and no day is the same. You can do things exactly the same two days in a row and get totally different results. Don't be hard on yourself, you are honestly doing so well. The only advice I would give you is find an endocrinologist that makes you feel comfortable and supports and encourages you. Your first Endo may not necessarily be the right fit for you and that's okay. Sending you lots of love and perfect blood sugar vibes for the foreseeable future! Xx

Hi Soph. I've had t1d for 10 years now. I have 2 pieces of advice for you. Number 1 is to work with the ebb and flow of diabetes. What I mean by that is to find ways to flow with the current of diabetes. For example, I always change my Dexcom before bed because then I go to sleep and I'm not waiting and freaking out during the 2 hour warm up phase. Another one would be to charge my pump when I am in the shower, or on the drive somewhere. I fit diabetes things into my life instead of fitting my life into diabetes. I don't let my diabetes be the show runner of my life. (Disclaimer: when I say "you" I mean that very generally, not you specifically) Number 2 is the mentality that "diabetics can still eat whatever they want, we just have to take insulin for it. Of course, if there are foods that make your bg too high or don't agree with you - don't eat those. Don't restrict foods because it's "too many carbs". Carbs are not the enemy. Carbs = energy.
@karebear79032 жыл бұрын
You are killing this girl!! Way better than I am lol when your sugar gets high drink drink drink and pee as much as possible. Something I have on bedside for when I get lows is a tube of glucose tablets. They are delicious and tastes like sweet tarts haha. And a lot of strenuous activity such as working out can drop your sugar in a case that happens always have some hard candy on hand and take your glucose monitor with you to workout. You will get the hang of this love. So far you are making this old pro look bad lol. ALso this was a traumatic experience for you Soph and it sounds like maybe you have some PTSD from it...I can relate..but you took Psychology so you already know this part haha

Hey! Fellow type 1 here from Australia. Just celebrated my 12 years, was diagnosed at 8! The journey is hard but you will get through, I still have trouble keeping my sugars in range sometimes but don’t let small things define your outlook of your diagnosis. You are the same person, just have a couple of extra things to do in the day but that’s okay!! You also seem very knowledgeable of the disease which is great! 2 tips, be careful using alcohol wipes as they can spike your sugars and show a less accurate reading and at the beginning it’s better to be as accurate as possible. Also, use both sides of your fingers and not just the tips as it damages them and avoid your pricking your index and thumb as you don’t want to overprick them and (not that it happens often) lose sensation in your fingers as they are the most used ones in every day life! Enjoy it and keep doing what you do!

I have been a diabetic for 3 years now and I think you are doing a great job! The new diagnosis can be overwhelming and unfortunately that doesn't really go away, but I just wanted to let you know a few tips >>> 1. It is really great to do meal prepping where you leave sticky notes of the total carb count for the meal, so that when you are ready to eat you can just go grab something instead of having to sit down and calculate carbs right then. 2. Let yourself rest if you feel you need it and LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!! It's better to be constantly checking your blood sugar rather than not checking it enough. 3. Find an endocrinologist you really like, if you can. You will be seeing them every now and then for a long period of time so it's great to find someone you can really trust. Thanks for being so open and sharing your diagnosis with us all, you are so strong!

hey! i have been type one diabetic for 10 years and wow ur doing such a great job already. i understand the fear in every thing you do because you just do not know how it will affect your sugar but that fear will slowly go away. i will say, however, eat the full banana! diabetics should not restrict themselves or go on a low carb diet. it’s just a matter of giving more insulin. also the more fat in u have diet, the more insulin resistant you become. try to eat more fruits and vegetables instead of a bunch of eggs and peanut butter. those won’t make ur sugar go up but they will keep ur sugar up high. idk if any of that made sense but limit the fat content not the carbs! also diabetes is just a balancing act. 10 years in and my sugars are not perfect and it’s do not need to be either. but ur already doing amazing and it looks like avery really loves being there for you. you’re gonna do great.

I've been Type 2 for 15 years, and after I got a handle of what I could and could not eat throughout the day, I stopped checking my blood sugar as often is I was, only because if my numbers fluctuated, it would stress me out to no end (Once my blood sugar actually went UP after working out, and that's when I decided to stop checking so much). I'm not saying don't check yourself ever, but try not to worry too much about it once you get into a groove and just eat healthy and continue exercising. Of course, you're Type 1 so it's different from me, but having a healthy lifestyle will always be beneficial in the end. You've got this!

I’m a CNA on a busy unit at my hospital, i test my pts sugars all day long and I can tell you you’re doing great and your numbers are pretty good also! One piece of advice tho is if you poke your finger on the side of ur finger it usually bleeds better (but push around your finger to milk it if ur having trouble getting blood) and it saves the meat of ur finger where you pick things up etc so it’s not as sore and bruised :) also you’ll obvi have to change your life a little with it, but don’t completely flip your life or stop doing things you did before it or revolve everything around it also- you’ll learn with time but it’ll be ok!!

Hi Soph! I’m a nurse as well. I know it can be overwhelming but another tip is when you wipe the blood away from your finger, don’t use the alcohol wipe again, use a clean paper towel. Here's a list of zero carb foods/drinks in case you wanted some ideas! >>> eggs, cheese, roasted seaweed, meat, diet drinks (in moderation bc they have other scary effects), fish, black coffee, mayonnaise, hot sauces, beef jerky, pork rinds, olives, avocado, kale, broccoli, etc. Some of these may be really low carb, and it also depends on what the brand is. But mostly these are zero carb if you go with a brand that doesn't add much artificial sugars or carbohydrates.

I have been diabetic for over 40 years. I am still learning every day. Work with your medical support. It can be so frustrating. Keep your head up. Technology and the other strides are making it a little easier to manage. I wish you the best. You have the right attitude.

Try and keep your insulin in a cooled bag with an ice pack, you dont want it to heat up too much!

It’s A LOT of trial and error. What might work for you, might not work for someone else. Trust your body. Listen to your body.

Hi Ms. Soph, try a mineral supplement it a huge help for type 1 and type 2 Diabetes like me, I tried Chromium Picolinate1000 mcg once a day, Vanadyl Sulfate 10mg once a day, Copper 2mg once a day, zinc 50mg once a day and Manganese 20mg once a day, in a period of 6 months you might don’t need anymore insulin shots because your pancreas start producing insulin. Just monitor you blood sugar levels check. Thanks and more power to you..👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️

I feel kind of stupid commenting this but idk if I should go check out to be tested for diabetes or not.. my family has a pretty bad history with diabetes basically almost everyone in my family has it. I’ve been thinking about diabetes lately bc I feel so off. I’ve been randomly hungry, gaining or losing weight up and down, feeling so exhausted and like so tired. Sometimes I feel lightheaded and stuff but I feel like if I tell my mom she just won’t rly take me to the doctor. So I wanted an opinion from other people who either have Diabetes or don’t (like nurses or whoever). I’ve been having this type of stuff for like so many months now and just having suspicions that it could be diabetes if anyone has an opinion please feel free to comment!!
