What a gracious lady. She welcomes visitors to the organ loft regularly, and she must have demonstrated the instrument and answered many of the same questions hundreds of times over, whilst maintaining her enthusiasm and consummate musicianship. How wonderful it would be to be there.

I must have been living on Mars, because i've just discovered Sophie-Veronique Choplin. Where has she been all of my life?!? Her improvision skills are magnificent. She is totally brilliant! She makes this massive Cavaille-Coll sit up and take notice. Thank you so much for posting this. It was wonderful. I don't understand French, but I caught a few words here and there, plus watching what she was doing, with the registrations and manuals, I got the gist of it. Bravo Madame!!

Looks like they found a cipher in the rank of pipes activated at 1:16 (that little constant squeak.) Makes one wonder how the caretakers of this historic instrument keep this phenomenal organ in such pristine condition. The largest Cavaille-Coll I believe I have ever seen, and the most majestic sound pallets through all volumes and dynamic levels I have ever seen. From the softest pipes you can BARELY hear, to triumphant reeds that send you into tomorrow with their sheer power!! What an instrument, absolutely impressive!!

So phenomenally talented! The key thing, I think, is not whether the St. Sulpice instrument is superior to ND or who is the better improviser; rather, I think we must celebrate that this magnificent school of organ thought is alive and well in Paris. So many brilliant players and composers and improvisers and organs stretching all the way back to Franck and beyond, and it's still going on! Veronique-Choplin and Roth and Latry and Lefebvre and Escaich and Castagnet and Warnier and more.

Agreed. Sophie is one of finest living luminaries of the French Organ School. She is such a talented, enthusiastic and engaging musician and person. Mon heroine!

Remembers me my visit of st sulpice, where she played a phenomenal improvisation, from Voix céleste to tutti, through all keys, it was absolutely astonishing, even much better than this, I was completely baffled. Unfortunately not many of these moments are caught on tape - it would be worth to do so.

I agree with miauw777 - her improvisations are technically brilliant, but also her gift for lyrical themes and fluid lines is something I have not heard from any other organist I can think of. A truly outstanding organist and improviser.
