I think pitting BoL and Coco against each other the way they have been shows a fair amount of ethnocentrism tbh. They are distinct from each other in art style, story and themes. The only similarities are the culture they are set in and the holiday/celebration depicted. It's like saying Love Actually is a rip off of The Holiday because they both follow British people's love lives around Christmas time.

@@Kodabear6275 Fair point but I think a lot of people can relate to thier family not approving of their career choice, especially if it's in a creative field and if the family have a strong sense of identity in another area. A musical career aspiration not only facilitates the inclusion of songs and musical numbers in the film but is more peaceful and more romantic than bullfighting, providing a contrast between the 'lover' and the 'fighter' aspects. Also the reasons the family had for keeping the respective sons away from music differed. In Coco it was because of Miguel's great great grandmother's abandonment issues. In BoL it was because it went against a 'proud' family tradition. There is a similarity there I grant you but not enough to make the movies too similar to me.

I definitely agree but this watch over I noticed the musician discouraged from his family and the bell death ideas a little more, I can see why one would draw similarities. Even with the family going to a ring to fight the bad guy or a musician and his friend not being as great as everyone thinks he is they are different but might warrant a similar feeling. I think the stories are very different but there are definitely some similar underlying vibes

I always find it really interesting that people say one is a knockoff of the other or say yea, they are really similar. That's because they are based on the same holiday. That's like being surprised that two random Christmas movies have similarities.

The creator of "The Book of Life", Jorge Gutierrez, said that he originally pitched the film to Disney, but they turned him down. Disney then appeared to turn around and give his "Day of the Dead" film idea to two white writers and directors instead. Disney also tried to trademark the term "Day of the Dead", which angered a lot of Mexicans, including cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, who accused them of cultural appropriation. It wasn't until Disney relented and hired some of their Mexican critics to work on "Coco" that it turned into a better film. It was the Mexican consultants who fixed a lot wrong with "Coco".

Okay, the whole point about Manolo writing his story is the fact that he was cheated out of the life originally written for him. The life that didn't have gods meddling in it, basically. But because a god meddled with things(cheated) Manolo has a chance to change his fate.

The creator of that movie also created the show El Tigre and not only confirmed they both take in the same universe, but also that a villainess of the show, Sartana, is one of the children of La Muerte and Xibalba and she does look like a mix

This movie holds a dear place to me because the creator also did one of my favorite shows as a kid "El tigre: the adventures of Manny Rivera". You can even see the main characters at the start of the story as background characters.

Two movies inspired by Mexican culture. I don't know if Coco really copied this one, I don't know which one is better. Personally, I believe both are good in their own way. I also think they are different stories but with similar details. The whole thing about the land of the dead, the importance of being remembered and remembering those who've passed away, all of that is not one movie copying another. Both are representing a real belief and a celebration as important as el Día de Muertos. I like both films and I love your videos btw.❤️ Greetings from Latin America.

This movie is so traditionally Mexican to its core and that's why I love it. The musical style, the aesthetic, the culture are all great. It even captures the negative stuff accurately, like the traditional gender expectations and familial peer pressure & guilt tripping.

But where the key difference lies is that Book of Life puts higher emphasis on ‘being yourself’, whereas Coco puts somewhat higher emphasis on the importance of family.

I love Book of life it is such an underrated movie I just love the story also the characters and I also love the romance between Manolo and Maria and that Joaquin came to his senses and became a true hero. Also I just point out that that everybody thinks that this and Coco are pretty much the same well in my opinion there very different yes they both involve Day of the Dead but there plot lines are different like Coco is more about family and the emotions were as this one is more about love and discovering yourself which still makes two enjoyable movies with different plots lines. It's essentially what the films of the "Lego" franchise would look like if Legos were made out of wood instead of plastic. 😄 Another good animated film that's set in Spain that also has a strong anti-bull fighting message is "Ferdinand" (2017), one of Blue Sky studios final efforts.

I remember being sooo mad when Coco was coming out with the plot synopsis like yeah it sounded like this...I remember creator of Book of Life had an idea for trilogy, with Maria and Joaquin as other movies main characters...I hope those happen sometimes, style of this movie (the "wooden" characters and gods especially) look so amazing. Also, Manolo's proposal to Maria is how the creator proposed his wife. :3

One of my favorite movies, I'm a sucker for simple storylines with deep characters, rich worlds, a fun childlike wonder, unique styles, and legends, not to mention the music. I remember being upset when I saw Coco the first time because of the similarities, not because of the settings and interesting cultural elements, those obviously go beyond both these movies, more little things, like Miguel also being a musician who his family doesn't approve of, the skeletal family members were very similar to the ones in this movie, the orange petal motif, both villains even get killed by a giant bell, etc. On my second watch though, both movies are very different, Coco is more realistic and serious and is telling a very different story, it just happens it used similar means to get there.

While it's not on the same level of great as Coco (despite Book of Life being made before), I still think it's really great and it's another great take on the Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos)!. It gives a good, genuine message on what this day is really all about and I love the really stellar animation! From the breathtaking backgrounds in the Land of the Dead to the neat wooden-puppet character designs.

The Book of Life is a great classic from my childhood. As a child, I loved love stories and songs, but now that I'm older, I recognize these flaws. If I like the concept of puppet characters, mans have too crude designs, while womens are better worked. We also make certain characters unsympathetic, like Maria's father who absolutely wants her to marry Roacin. Not to mention the rain scene where the two put the blame for Maria's "death" on Manolo, it was pretty gratuitous. Xibalba and La Muerte don't seem to take into account that Maria might not want to marry one of her friends or stay alone, making our trio a bit of entertainment I have the impression. But despite that, this film has a lot of qualities. Decorations are very elaborate and vary depending on the location. If the secondary characters are questionable, the main ones are well done: Manolo is the hero’s type who can't seem to feel like himself, but who is ready to do anything to save the girl he loves. Maria is a very good example of a strong woman, although she ends up with Manolo, she remains true to her beliefs and does not seek to depend on a man. Moreover, if she accepts Roacin's proposal, it is only to protect the village, showing what she is ready to do to protect those she loves. Roacin is the pretentious and cad character but who gradually understands his mistakes and makes up for it at the end. I also like La muerte which (besides being beautiful) has some great interactions with Xibalba. The duo has very successful designs and if their reconciliation at the end may seem easy, that doesn't bother me either. Then The Chandler has a pep that I love and makes me laugh. The songs are very good and well paced A lot of people compare this mobile to Coco, but apart from the theme of Mexico, music and días de los muertos, they are each very different: one is about a love story, the other about a child who discovers the world of the dead to meet his ancestor. In short, Coco surpasses The Book of Life, but I have a great memory of this film that I enjoy today.
