In your opinion, how does early speech development impact a child's overall cognitive development, and are there any long-term benefits?

Thank you for this wonderful video and the amazing tips. Sorry but I’m going to have a bit of a rant as my 2.5 year old is not talking yet. He has been referred for a speech and language therapy assessment which has a waiting time of 12 months and we have just been told the waiting time for a hearing test is 18 months! Our children are being failed. It really is appalling.

Oh I'm so sorry, that's really not good enough is it! As unfortunate as it is, I think sometimes the only way to get things moving is to go private if that's an option. As worrying as it can be, being non-verbal at 2.5 isn't as uncommon as we might think, sometimes speech doesn't take off until 3+ (and there isnt always an underlying problem). I understand that's not reassuring in the moment though! Using sign language or PECS (visual picture cues) is also a good option to help with the difficulties that go along with a lack of verbal communication and it won't impede speech development but can actually help it along xx
