Without knowing what the other piece upgrades do, I can't offer any balance rulings as a designer, but I can give you one suggestion as it seems you don't want the game to be over as fast as it was, especially since you can take more than 1 piece a turn at range. Your King has 20 hp and keep the King's Second Chance ability only if an ability, not a capture, would bring him under 0. I can't comment on any of the other pieces yet though without seeing the full list, but those king changes should make the game go on longer and be more interesting.

Another idea, to bring back the concept of checkmate: If the King would die, it can escape to an adjacent safe square, if there is one.

Considering the variety of options your pieces have available when getting promoted, i think it would be interesting if you used Shogi rules (basically Japanese chess) where you can place the pieces you captured from your opponent. Shogi does have a promotion system (it's a little different, but a similar concept) but captured pieces lose their promotions. It could be a chaotic twist to the game, but I'd love to see how that would affect the balance patch 3.0 of Sophist chess.

OMG this was another glorious board game content by none other than the lord of gamers, Sophist himself! Fr though, hope we get to see more of the interesting combos possible! Must've took a while thinking up all this. Credits to remembering all the things you wrote for a good DM. Also, I love how since Sophist the game designer is playing, it's like he has the knowledge cheat power of isekai protagonists where he knows the hidden ins and outs of the system and could make the best informed decisions (or the funniest or most exciting) one if he wanted to. And with this advantage is he finally prepared to take on, the king of skill!

Funny story. There actually was a patch note way back in the day. In the origonal version of chess, the terms Check and Check Mate did not exist. They were added when the game travelled to Iran from India.

I do want to thank you because after watching this game I decided to also spice up chess and called it a sequel despite not creating chess and taking your idea as my own. I do intend to add more after I play with some friends, but as it stands right now here's what I got: Each piece has 10 health, Kings have 15 health to account for their importance. After you move a piece, Upgrade it. Under normal circumstances, each piece can have a maximum of 2 Upgrades. Generic Upgrades can be applied to any piece. Huh, I just realized I'm just listing out rules. That's kinda boring. Anyway, the numbers. 17 Generic Upgrades. 10 Pawn Upgrades 10 Knight Upgrades 10 Bishop Upgrades 10 Queen Upgrades 10 Rook Upgrades 10 King Upgrades. This comes down to 77 Upgrades. Neat. Oh yeah, and also the D20 I stole from you. Anyways, I guess I just wanted to let you know. I mean, there's the chance you don't see this but. Hey, I'm still typing, so that must mean something. I watched this video, and I've already gotten "inspired" by Magic the Noah, and me and my friends had fun. So, let's see how my friends see this one.
