Pepper was one of the greatest, passionate, and melodic Baritone player ever

This is an interesting ensemble. I worked with the master Lionel Hampton from 1982-1987 and again in 1993 for another tour of Europe in the spring of '93. This is prior to expanding to the full 17 piece big band which he finally did once again around 1981. But to have not one but two of the world's greatest Baritone Saxophonists, Pepper and Cecil Payne is incredible in itself. Working with Hamp I got to play with the likes of George Duvivier, Slam Stewart, Frankie Dunlop, Arnett Cobb, Dizzy, and many others.

Yes, it is the earliest footage we have of Pepper. He was bored stiff with this gig but he and Hamp did have a nice father-son relationship. As Dan Morgenstern pointed out recently, Hamp didn't introduce people by name or grant features because it was thought he'd then have to raise their pay scale. Pepper, however, was a special exception. I'm still searching for Byrd/Adams TV footage, some with Herbie Hancock. John and I sent this one to Danno to post for us due to its historical importance. We wanted to be sure that it was categorized the right way so others could enjoy it

One can't be "bored stiff" when you play like this. Pepper made the best out of an opportunity Hamp gave to him. I mean - sure it's a commercial gig and all - but c'mon: Hamp is giving all that space and time to Pepper. I've listened to Flying Home with Pepper on that very gig (thx for posting it!) and he gets to play chorus after chorus. My Kudos go to Hamp! Just have a look at his fellow musicians: except they're humble learning a lesson here - they are the ones which must be bored!

Does any footage or film/video exist with Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams with Herbie Hancock? I'd love to see some of that band myself. I've been hoping to come across some Miles Davis with George Coleman on video from '63-'64 but nothing surfaced as of yet, but who knows....

One of the greatest baritone saxophone players. He and Harry Carney were in a class by themselves.

I helped photograpgh some of the Jazz record cover's in the early 1960's for Riverside & Jazzland , I would often go to Birdland after work, when Adams was playing a prominent Black musican after Adams did a solo yelled "Pepper your the only White man to play like that"..

Quite the interesting rendition of sophisticated lady this is, a nice change from Carney's wonderful yet all too mellow tone. To hear Pepper play this is to hearing a metal band play a Sarah Vaughan piece. Truly unique in every way, just shows how you can take anything and turn it into something almost entirely different and it still make sense. love Pepper man, this is good stuff

The most beatyful Sound on a Barytonsax I ever heard belongs to Lasse Gulin.
