when I read oedipus at Colonus I see a man lamenting the loss of his powers, the loss of his city, and the loss of his life. The war against Sparta was not going well. In fact when the play was performed in 401. Athens had lost and been occupied by Sparta. The puppet government or 30 tyrants were in control. This play is tinged with a need for blessing and a glimpse of hope.

401 BC democracy had been reinstated in Athens. The 30 tyrants ruled around 403 BC
