Sorcery Contested Realm Avatar Tier List! Hot Takes?!

Deathspeaker has won both the first ever sanctioned Sorcery Tourney at last years Gen Con, and this year it won the Sorcery League. I would put it above Avatar of Earth just for those two feats alone. AoE is def S tier strong, but if it does have one weakness, I would argue it is when it goes up against decks that don't run earth sites themselves (like the aforementioned Fire/Air Deathspeaker deck that won @ Gen Con), or have blow out cards like Atlantean Fate that mitigate Earth Threshold and thus help weaken its attack power. Enchantress was a sleeper hit no one was counting on I think, until Sorcery League opened out eyes, and I feel that currently its worthy of being at the bottom of A Tier (especially when we will probably only be getting stronger auras going forward, and the Avatars built in ability to help you answer your opponents auras almost instantly). Sorcerer and Pathfinder I could go either way on putting one above the other but both are def worthy of their A tier status. Where I think I differ in this list is the concept of the ranking of "Wait till next set" versus "play casually" tiers. To me if you are waiting till the next set, that sounds like don't bother playing these avatars till more powerful cards come along. To me that puts its tier below that of playing casually because at least then the avatars are still something you play with, just don't expect them to be in the competitive group of the top tier ones. If I used that rearrangement of the tiers themselves I'd rank Geomancer, Waveshaper, AoF, Seer, Battlemage and Sparkmage as casual play tier, and then below them in the "wait until next set" tier I would rank Elementalist. In the bottom Don't Play Tier I'd put AoW and AoA. I don't see anything that could lift these cards up to a meaningful degree that they'll ever be good. Finally in the especially bad F tier, I have set aside for the worst avatar in the entire game, and the F stands for Flamecaller. You'd think that an Avatar like Flamecaller could see improvement over time but the issue for it is, its 2ndary ability revolves around minions in your graveyard. In an effort to balance Deathspeaker and bring his power down a rung, I can see more and more graveyard hate being introduced into the game. While this is fine for a top tier Avatar like Deathspeaker, it will be absolutely devastating for Flamecaller, to the point where I don't see him ever really seeing much play. Especially when he has to not only tap to get his effect (something Deathspeaker doesn't have to do) but also he only gets the trigger from Fire minions and only the ones in your graveyard (something that Deathspeaker also doesn't have to worry about). TThen there is the nerf to projectiles in the new rules to consider. You might A) not have a legal target in any of the 4 cardinal directions that you can hit even if you wish to use his ability on that turn, and B) something could be in the way of your projectile that ends up taking the damage for the true target you wanted to hit behind it. This means you have to balance your deck between enough magic spells to keep the board clear of weaker targets, while also making sure you have enough fire minions that would go in the deck to go to the graveyard to banish in the first place and also make sure that your own minions are also not getting in the way of your Flamecaller too! And all of this is on top of the fact that you may need to tap your Flamecaller to get him into position to use his 2ndary ability AND tap him to play or draw sites when you need to. Its really overall bad design imo for the poor guy. LOL

Love the videos! We need more Sorcery content. Were you mostly just going by what it feels like to play as these? Geomancer and Enchantress have both taken down mid-sized tournaments, with AoA and AoE being runners up sometimes.... and Pathfinder hasn't won anything I don't think? If Sorceror isn't in S tier, then I'd have to bump Pathfinder and AOE down into A, with Deathspeaker being the clear "best" but I would put Sorceror right there with it. I'd probably have it something more like this: S - Sorceror, Deathspeaker A - AoE, AoA, Enchantress, Geo Wait: Seer (needs a game winning combo), Pathfinder (needs more sites), Casual: Battlemage, AoW, Waveshaper, Elementalist, Sparkmage Bad: AoF, Flamecaller

When I made this video, there was not any major tournaments and was mainly influenced by the sorcery league and my local meta. I don't disagree with you list. I will say BattleMage did get second place at March of the mortals

That was a fun video. I would put speaker on top because it actually has been the top tourney card. I don’t agree with battle mage because it’s far more consistent than every card you listed in the tier above it but I do agree it is not a card at the very top… I think it was just kind of confusing that your next category was named “wait longer”. In that respect battle mage is probably not a wait for more to come as it has plenty for what it is… but it mops the floor with elementalist as it wants to go off on turn 3 and elementalist needs more turns to develop. It’s just an aggro deck style card and is always going to outpace most of those cards off the start line. But really fun content.
