I want to thank you for your video. We own an 05 Sorrento and our crank shaft bolt broke and we had replaced it twice already with no luck. however we watched your video and my husband tried your fix. happy to say we haven't had any more problems. thank you!!!

Thanks Michelle..... Here are a couple more videos that I wanted to bring to your attention. And they show an important part to prevent the problem from happening again. It all boils down to keeping the crank bolt from becoming lose. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKmWqZ6jiq9_Z8U and kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH7YaplnqqtmbZo

Yes it has been holding up very well.... 36,000 miles since the fix with no issues

IM so glad i found this video! I am stressing out about our Kia Sorento. It's the second bolt break in two years

FL Bill..... Yes it is still holding up very well.... I truly feel the most important part is to add the plate with the 22mm socket welded to it then secured with 2 small bolts to the face of the pulley/balancer...... This prevents the main crank bolt from becoming lose! If that crank bolt stays tight then no leverage can occur on the bolt

I just fixed mine,,instead of bolts I used the role pin for a hole and drilled 2 more holes and inserted 3 stainless steel dowel pins so I don't have to grind the pulley bolt washer to clear any bolt heads..

Hello Rick..... Hope it all goes well for you.... So far the repair I did is still holding strong..... Make sure you look through the other 2 video links I put in on some of the other comments.... Good luck

Am I correct to say that , the sprocket/ gear is the bottom timing belt gear and you have to tear down the motor to that point to get the gear out to do the fix ?

Interesting. Is it still holding up? Does the big washer on the crank bolt clear the 3 smaller bolts you used to install the blancer?

I'm wondering this too
@LifewithAbraham7 жыл бұрын
Bill I just bought a 2005 kia sorento and I live in Maine. I bought this because my daughter was born with brain damage and we have a lot of doctors appointments to go to. We needed an affordable 4x4. Well the guy told me that there was nothing wrong with it and promised me my little girl would be safe. I then found a slip saying he had this repaired a few thousand miles ago so I looked it up and found out about the class action lawsuit. I'm not covered but I'm scared to use this car now, and we are middle class hard working family. I don't know much about cars, but I was wondering if there was anything I could do to prevent this from happening, I read horror stories and I wonder, if I drive slower would it help, if I made sure not to pull anything to heavy would I be ok. Basically is there anything I can do to make that bolt last longer, we don't have the money to get a new vehicle and I wouldn't sell this knowing the seriousness of this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at these 2 videos ....They were created to try and explain to someone that had the same problem and she was not familiar with a wide variety of hand tools .......so some of the explanation may seem very basic to a back yard mechanic.... she did have the socket plate made by her local shop and her Kia Sorento has had no issues and still going strong today kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH7YaplnqqtmbZo and kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKmWqZ6jiq9_Z8U How does the bolt become loose you ask? I am not an engineer but here is my opinion First and foremost let me do my best to explain the reason why (in my opinion) these Kia crank bolts fail..... they fail because they become loose... if they do not loosen then there is no leverage from all the weight of the pulley\harmonic balancer system transferred to the crank bolt........ with the rotation of the motor and the weight of the pulley system during normal use it eventually causes the crank bolt to loosen bit by bit..... once the crank bolt begins to loosen then all the weight of the pulley\Harmonic balancer with added side to side pull from tightness of the belts...... and of course the torque of the motor....... eventually it spins the crank bolt all the way out...... or....(if your even more unlucky) it snaps the crank bolt in half and leaves the other half inside the crankshaft bolt hole....... I know of several failures with trying to add more roll pins and 3 + cap screws to hold the pully to the sprocket and they have failed by all of the roll pns and cap screws shearing off....... It would not have happened if the crank bolt had not come lose in the first place........With that being said.....the NUMBER ONE priority is to keep the crank bolt tight!! and prevent it from becoming lose......And so far the socket plate (explained in video) has done the trick for me and also two other people that have installed the socket plate

Thank you Dan, I stopped by a garage and man this guy gave me so much shit, he kept saying it wasn't the bolt it pulley becoming lose at the back, nor the nay, is this job possible for a regular joe, that doesn't know much about cars... or better yet do you have a list of all the parts you used and where I can buy them from

Hi, im curious as to how the gear and harmonic balancer would be stuck together. I cannot seperate them.
@catchinhail6 жыл бұрын
Tyler.... the harmonic balancer (pulley) and sprocket are definitely 2 separate pieces..... not sure why it would be stuck together.....although the sprocket does slide into the harmonic balancer with a very close machined fit..... is it rusted ? Has it ever been apart and modified by a previous owner possibly?
@catchinhail6 жыл бұрын
Correct.... If the crank bolt snaps or spins out the the single roll pin would have sheared off.... Best to replace timing belt when your in that deep anyway
@kit-catkaileigh6 жыл бұрын
Your's is an excellent suggestion. However, the issue I have with it is that it requires removing the timing belt (to extract the crankshaft sprocket), which is no small task. Regardless, the crankshaft bolt (aka, pulley bolt) is typically torqued to around 200 ft-lbs on just about all vehicles per manufacturer service manual spec. Sooo... unless the mechanic is not torquing that bolt to spec (by using an impact wrench, for example--which many do), then it seems like the thing should be pretty well secured from spinning loose.

What is the torque specs on the crank bolt?
@catchinhail5 жыл бұрын
I am not exactly sure what it should be ....... if I remember correctly I put at least 80lb torque on it....... but that was 4 years ago when I did it ..... and it still has not failed .... all others I have heard about have failed ...... the most important part is the "socket plate" .... with the socket plate the crank bolt can NOT come lose ..... this is just my way of making it last so anyone can think of a better fix then do it....... obviously KIA way of fixing it is big fail
