Sorry, But You Shouldn't Use Linux
Linux is a powerful operating system, but it’s not for everyone. In this video, I discuss real-life situations where Linux might not be the right choice for you, whether it’s because of gaming limitations, specialized software, or hardware compatibility issues. This isn’t to scare you away from Linux, but to help you make an informed decision before making the switch.
If you’re thinking about trying Linux or already planning to switch, watch this first to know what challenges you might face and how to prepare for them. Share your thoughts in the comments or join the discussion on our Discord server.

I am an ex Windows user. I used to use Windows 7 until Microsoft stopped support for it. So I switched to Linux 3 years ago because of this. Because I didn't want to upgrade to Windows 10. The way Windows 11 is, using Linux is the only option. Because Windows 11 is nothing like the old Windows XP and 7 we knew and loved.

What about getting a MacBook, Mac Mini, or iMac? Apple hasn’t removed local accounts from MacOS, has it? Yes, I am aware of the disappearance of ports, which started with Apple and other PC companies followed suit, especially in laptops. Canonical may be pushing snaps, but at least it hasn’t removed local accounts from Ubuntu Desktop.

Good for you. I like to turn on my computer working without bugs, and every feature is available, like sharing a wifi hotspot (with a password) while having the firewall turned on, then click on a game's icon and it starts without any issues or bugs. Linux didn't even open Steam when I clicked the icon. Linux is 90% ass, linux users are on copium. Linux is for special hardware like the supercomputers that NASA uses or handheld devices like the Steam Deck or server enviroments. Linux is not good on a desktop and never will be, because it will always be dependent on Windows, especially when it comes to games.

@@szhadjii8363 Maybe the Linux desktop should make money with ads, just like Android. But then they should offer a paid subscription for ad-free experience. Developers have to get paid for their hard work. They have bills to pay, mouths to feed. Any OS that is for both servers and mobile devices is also for desktops. Linux is just like Unix - it was always for servers, never personal devices. AIX, Solaris, and HP-UX don’t have mobile versions, neither did SGI IRIX.

@ I'm sorry your experience has been underwhelming... I do know that the learning curve can be steeper than what is ideal... I'd never recommend to anyone to let go of their working system before becoming comfortable on their new system, no matter which direction they're going... If that means having 2 for a while, then I think that's a pretty good approach. Linux is great for NASA... but it's been great for me too, and my hardware is nothing special (Ryzen 7900X3D / Radeon 6800)... I did used to be on a 9900K and a 2070XC, and for some reason, that config did come with some very stubborn issues. It did take me a year to replace it, and I understand that frustration, but since then, Nvidia has made some significant improvements and seems to be more viable than when I had Nvidia. "Linux will never be good on the desktop"... Brodie Robertson and The Linux Experiment just highlighted a survey hosted by the Arch Linux Subreddit, and if I recall correctly, more than 77% of users there game on their systems, while something like 65% of them reported something of an easy experience. Sure, it's from it's own audience, but people are out there having success. I'm not seeing how Linux is dependent on Windows, you'll have to connect those dots for me. I do see the opposite though, Windows and Mac both often take from FOSS projects to kickstart their own features... I think realistically, we could say there's an ecosystem.

Well, since you already bought another SSD then I guess you have more storage, but as a note for the future in case you ever need it: you don't actually need separate drives for different OSes to be installed, unless you don't have enough storage on one drive. You can use partitions for that, they essentially divide a drive into multiple sections, and so that way you can install Windows on one partition of the drive, and Linux on another partition of the same drive. It's pretty easy to do, too: install Windows first, during the part where you make partitions, leave some storage unformatted, that'll be the storage you'll use for Linux. Then, when installing Linux, just format the other partition to ext4 (or whatever other filesystem you prefer) and install the OS on it

One could run Linux on a Raspberry Pi while the main PC runs Windows. Or since ARM Cortex might have limited support, even from Linux software, you could get an Intel NUC, Lenovo IdeaCentre Mini, or a Minisforum or SlimBook mini-PC to run Linux. One could even run Ubuntu Desktop on an entry-level server such as a PowerEdge T40 or T150, if you want multiseat configuration with Xnest or Xephyr, and/or MultiseatX and possibly Multiseat Display Manager. Fedora Server on Lenovo ThinkServer TS40 or ThinkSystem ST50 for home server. I think the go-to Linux distro for personal computers is Ubuntu Desktop. That’s the de facto standard for the Linux desktop.

I have been using Linux for 6 years and I never had problems. Because I have two systems. I use Windows to play games and for software that isn't available on Linux or doesn't work that good, and I use Linux for old computers that don't support Windows 11. I personally still use Linux every day for development in Ren'Py right now and to have something that isn't Windows every day. People use Linux because they don't want to have the Windows crap from the MS Store or the spyware that Microsoft puts on WIndows, and we want open-source software. Linux has nothing to do on a desktop workstation. The reason is very simple : there is no engineering software available for Linux. And Linux isn't a brand but MS Windows is. All the major CAD/CAM software vendors such as Siemens PLM, Dassault Systems, Cadence etc. abandoned developing their products for Linux many years ago. They've got left server parts only. The exception is simulation software such Ansys that might require cluster networking for parallel computations. Linux is good at embedded electronics, network gear & servers, mobile phones. But it totally sucks on desktops because businesses stay away from Linux due to obvious risks it carries. That's why the Linux market share never exceeds 2%.

The only reason as to why any of your arguments exist is because corporations don't find it viable to support Linux because of the relatively small user base. Using those arguments as the means to advocate against using Linux is very shallow minded and weak. Instead, you should advocate for more people use, support and develop for Linux to get the attention of the companies who throw Linux under the bus.

I completely agree that the main reason these issues exist is because corporations don’t find it profitable to support Linux. That’s exactly why I always advocate for using and supporting Linux in most of my videos. But in this video, I wanted to be realistic and talk about the situations where Linux might not be the right choice-at least for now. The goal isn’t to discourage people from using Linux but to help them make an informed decision based on their needs. More users = more support, but people also need to know what challenges they might face before switching.

This is true and will probably continue to be true forever; MS still possess most of the desktop market share. Add to that the hesitance of the majority to try something new (i.e., Linux). I've been using Linux since the late 1990s and continue to so (for personal use) but I do still use some Windows apps in a virtual environment.

Agree, Linux is the worst buggy half-baked software ever made. You can't even do simple things without using terminal in this OS.

that was 10 years ago in a modern distribution, for an average user you dont need to touch the terminal at all

Linux is perfectly fine for the novice user, sitting in the terminal 24/7 was a long time ago. Give it a try tbh.

I would never think about going back to Windows ,I have been very happy with Linux for many years. I don't need Windows for anything and I certainly don't need their spyware, bloat and intrusiveness. I would be very happy if Microsoft bent belly up but that is not likely to happen more's the pity.

I still prefer windows 'cause a lot of programs are not compatible with linux and the alternative sucks.......there are not exist secure operating systems , there are virus also in linux i'm studying cyber-security and also progamming.....and IMO Linux is more dangerous than windows...'cause there are a lot of things to keep an eye on compared to windows......but for other things linux is definitely better
