What's interesting is that looking back...there WAS a certain lore being built up from Season 1 all the way to the movie, even if it was very small. The idea that the gift shops were this horrific "worst possible thing" later becoming the main monster of the movie is a kind of interesting touch.

So about there being no episode that feels like a "finale", the first SpongeBob movie was actually supposed to be the finale of the whole show. The creator, Stephen Hillenburg, wanted went on the record as wanting to end the series with the movie. It even ends at a good place for the series. But Nick saw just how much they were raking from merchandise and the viewership from constant re-runs, Nick decided to keep SpongeBob around. Now we're 2 more movies deep and sooooooo many episodes/seasons later and it’s still going strong (even though it truly has lost its luster after all these years). But after Stephen Hillenburg past away, Nick went back on their promise to Hillenburg about NOT milking SpongeBob and making spin-offs like Camp Koral and The Patrick Star Show (which are terrible btw) and they just keep churning out lack-luster SB episodes that rely more on gross out humor 😒
