I actually got my grandmother an electric jar opener. At first, she was annoyed because she said she never ate anything that came in jars and she wouldn’t have any use for it. Turns out she wasn’t able to open jars so she just didn’t buy anything that came in one. Two years later she now uses it on a daily basis!

It likely said on the foil Ben peeled off -- regular Sterno only burns at 80*C but I imagine that for a pizza oven it would need to be higher. It does look depressingly like the same blue gel from regular Sterno, though, in which case you don't need the gadget at all.

Had this talk recently with a friend. There's a lot of objects out there that kind of get laughed at and marketed as "are you too lazy to pull your socks on?" kind of gadgets. But those items are really, really important for people that have physical limitations. Because those people are probably not enough to make manufacturing the product profitable, the companies have to do those kind of "are you too lazy" marketing schemes to sell enough.

I've had one of these for years. I can't count how many times it's saved me from having to change eating plans. @@rasmusazu I used to cook for a living and remember being handed a 20 kg bag of onions and told how many prep pans of each dice size and slice thickness to do. And how you HAD to manage your time. That is the big reason for the chaos in "Pass It On". Only something like toasting pine nuts really need ALL your attention because they burn in seconds and your boss yells at you for wasting expensive ingredients. But the lads have done the food stand thing and opened that pop up in Japan. So don't write off your suggestion just yet. It would take some planning and they could do it like larger restaurants have a rotating staff meal. I think they probably do that with the short shelf life pantry stuff in each "Pass It On" (after the doing the beauty shots and B roll) but don't film it.

As an engineer, I particularly appreciate gadgets that have been well engineered in their design and also in application, being simple to use but still performing their function effectively! The jar opener is a perfect example of this, it’s foolproof to use, removes lids of all sizes and makes the task applicable to all demographics

I just looked it up on their website and the one here seems to be an old model, just so you know. They are all more horizontal versions now with a corded version of the small one for sealing Tupperware. Also, according to an Amazon review/question, the Tupperware currently for sale on their website doesn't work with this model. Just a heads up.

My grandma would've loved the glas opener thingie. She had a nipper style tool to help do it manually, but for bigger lids you'd need freakishly big hands to operate it. As for the blooper: Opening a glas that way pushes your thumb and the ball of your thumb against the lid. This doesn't require as much grip strength as using the other hand and needing a lot more strength from the thumb to hold the lid without it slipping.

I've got a full sized Food Saver Vacuum Sealer. I used it a LOT when my kid was in college(living in a tiny studio apartment).to drop off frozen home cooked/grilled things to supplement usual college kid cooking. Worked a treat and you could pop the bags (vented) into the microwave. What I really like is the container (bigger than the one you all used) they sell for marinating meat. Poke a few holes in meat, pour in marinade of choice, put on the lid, and vacuum out the excess air. I swear to you that you can marinate to perfection in a fraction of the time usually needed.

There’s a dish in Vietnam called “bún chả Hà Nội” that would be a good test of cooking the same kind of meat (pork) 4 different ways: egg roll (chả giò), pork patty (chả/nem heo), pork belly, and grilled pork. 4 different ways, 4 different cook times. They laughed at Jamie suggesting having that mini pizza oven on his desk just feeding stuff into it and snacking as it comes out but as someone who legit does that with a toaster oven it's honestly great. It forces you to take quick breaks for a minute or two assembling the next batch and take out your current one, which can help your current work from reaching burnout as quick. Does for me at least.
