Well done. I will be tuning in for the next videos. I have a 2002 998 and I will be installing a 999s deep sump engine into it in the next few weeks. I thought about opting for a 1098 engine, but I didnt want to deal with the airbox issue and exhaust issues. But I cant wait to see what you guys do with it.
@taylorwlaird Жыл бұрын
Hey Will! Good luck with your swap! Those issues you mentioned aren't too bad, as there are a few people making swap airboxes and the exhausts aren't too hard to fit up. The frame clearances, however... But anyway, it should be worth it. Episode two is already up! Thank you for tuning in!

I have been thinking of doing a 748 big bore by swapping the top end from an ST4 but you are going a few steps further up the path with this project.

I built an 853 motor for my old 748 years ago and it was absolutely worth it. 996 power and the rev characteristics of the 748 motor? Bliss. Highly recommended.

Been there and done that. Enjoy. You gonna make your own airbox or mod the fuel tank and run the 1098 one? You will have some mods to make on the frame cross bracing also. Good luck.

We have a pretty rad airbox solution coming from our friend Giordano Loi. And yep, the frame has an appointment with a local framebuilder! We are SO pumped for this to be finished and on the track.

I have a 848 stealth swapped it with a 1098. Not sure if I should have a ecu flash done for performance.

I had one of the earliest 916 Strada’s back in the day, a 1994 bike. It was my introduction to Ducati and V twins! I don’t have a Ducati at the moment, but I do have a Suzuki TL-R and a Gen 2 Aprilia RSV Factory. Yours looks a great example to start with.. maybe just a few too many stickers and led’s for me though 😉 Edit.. 90s/early 00s WSBK was the best, totally agree! I look forward to seeing the final product 👍🏼 (subscribed)

Oh heck yes, those early 916s with the riveted fairings are beautiful and I’ve always wanted one. And yep, those fairings were definitely not my favorite. Just wait for what I have in store, I think you’ll approve!
@vanduc996 Жыл бұрын
Cool project. I'm subscribed and will be watching. I think 300 lbs is a bit ambitious but it's always good to aim high. Or low in this case. I've knocked about 70 lbs from the stock wet weight of my 996 so it's now down to about 395 lbs with about half a tank of gas, and there's not a lot of weight I could drop from there. Mag swingarm and triples are really all that's left to do and that would drop maybe 7 -10 lbs. The 1098 motor is lighter than the older Desmoquattro so that will help for sure... Anyway, will be curious to see where you end up weight wise
@taylorwlaird Жыл бұрын
Hah. I was wondering when I was going to get called out on that one. And it is massively ambitious, but I do have a few things working in my favor. 1) it's a track bike, so there's a LOT that doesn't need to be put back in and 2) SO much carbon and magnesium. Honestly, if I hit under 350 dry, I'll be happy. 325 or less? Ecstatic.

Oh, and thank you for subscribing!

I was wondering if it was track only, that obviously drops some weight as well. Anyway, have fun with the project!

I've just recently had the very dumb idea to swap a V2 engine from a wrecked Panigale into my Cb350. The combo of lightness and insane power would be terrifying and so cool.

@Taylor Laird can't use it in the M12 as those requires chip keys. Plus good luck finding one, they are very rare but useless on modern Ducatis.

We considered an M1200 motor, but in the end, the characteristics of the VERY superbike-ey 1098 motor won out. We just want it to be as close to a snappy WSBK as possible.
@justinwilliams8147 Жыл бұрын
Just starting this series, so you may answer this question later. Any reason you went with the 1098 versus the 1198 for the engine swap? I have been thinking about this same kind of build for years.
@taylorwlaird Жыл бұрын
Sorry man, I totally missed this! There are two reasons: First being the 1098 is far more brutal, in my opinion, than the 1198 motor. We're going for the high-strung racebike vibe, so I figured this would be the motor that would replicate the feeling of riding one minus the insane cost of building a real RS motor. Second, the whole parts bike cost me $400, sooooooo 🤷♂
@justinwilliams8147 Жыл бұрын
@@taylorwlaird Thanks, Taylor. That totally makes sense, especially the part about getting the parts bike for $400. 😁. I a really enjoying the build. Hopefully, one day, I'll do one myself. Cheers

why didnt you use 1098S forks instead of 999S forks?
@sosocycles Жыл бұрын
It currently has 999S forks on it!
@USAracing Жыл бұрын
@@sosocycles yeah I saw that but you dont get what I am saying! 1098/1198 Ohlins forks are better, look better and have the 70mm bolt spacing....meaning you can use several different Ducati fenders as well as a 916 style one, since your bike is from that generation. The 999 forks can ONLY use a 999 fender.
@USAracing Жыл бұрын
@@sosocycles every Ducati SBK and monster from the 1994 - 2013 (excluding the 749/999 and 1199 Panigale) had 70mm bolt hole spacing for the front fender. You could have used a 748/916/996/998 carbon fender to keep the bike looking more like a 748 if you have used 1098S Ohlins forks
@taylorwlaird Жыл бұрын
@@USAracing Because I wanted radial calipers and the older style fork lowers. The 1098 style lowers don’t fit with the style I’m going for, but I totally see what you’re saying.
@USAracing Жыл бұрын
@@taylorwlaird so you are saying you dont like the split design of the 1098 fork bottoms? Although they are still radial mount. Well now you are stuck with running a 999 fender. You know you could probably get some radial fork lowers from Italy that are 70mm. Ask Justin he probably has a connection. I know Motocorse makes them but they are way too expensive!!! Like $1200
