A pair of GP30's and a pair of GP35's, still in their Southern paint, along with one repainted NS B36-7 lead train 171 at Spartanburg, SC. in this early NS action. There was a Southern bay window caboose on the rear.

@SCL1306 Thanks for watching! Those were re-used from old Alcos that the Southern traded in for the purchase of the GP35's.

So sad that you do not see a caboose on the end of a train anymore.

That is a rare catch indeed seeing a B36-7. I remember one stayed down at the McDonough Training Center, (3819 I think) while its sisters ran off locomotive owed hours to power hungry UP in the late 90s until their retirement.....another fine post thanks!

@benschlechter Agreed! They were starting to get rare when this was shot. Trains 171 & 172 were the main ones that had cabooses at that time. Thanks for watching & commenting!

#2538 was on a local freight in Moyock NC around the year 1985. The line was the original Norfolk Southern railway which was then the Southern, the line extended all the way to Raleigh and then Charlotte NC. They used to have a 10 mile draw bridge that once crossed the Albemarle sound, which was dismantled in 1989! when the Present Norfolk Southern came along, Norfolk Southern brought the Chesapeake and Albemarle railroad through the thoroughbred shortline program. C&A now owns the line from Chesapeake VA to Edenton NC!

Thanks to technology, all you see is the F.R.E.D. on the end of trains now, plus on two crew members (sometimes 3) on the train.
