That is cool to see actual machine working in a mine. This is the first video i have seen where a machine is actually working active. Cool

My college course, "Geography of Minnesota", made 3 field trips during the semester, one of which was to this mine (and two other places that day). Really didn't have a whole lot do with Geography but riding this lift down to the mine and back up, and seeing it run in person, was the highlight of the whole course.

The green and red apparatus is called a lily controller. It regulates speed and shaft limits, to high in the shaft to low in the shaft. It will automatically put on the brakes if the set limits are exceeded. Most of them were made in Chicago Illinois .

I saw this almost exact machine in a video from “the proper people”, where they explored an abandoned iron mine. Pretty cool to see this, where they found it 1200 meters deep underground

Same thing I was about to comment, weird seeing such a similar design in a french mine as in this one but I guess if it's the best way to solve a problem then everyone will be doing it.

Really cool that you have a working example. The Nordberg hoist at the Quincy mine near Hancock MI is impressive, but it is inoperable thanks to sitting exposed to the elements for years before someone came forward to preserve it.

Whoo one big winding drum (winch) elevator machine. 600 HP don't need a counterweight. Already have two cabs east and west on going up, other going down.

@marktomlinson3448Ай бұрын
It is a flyball governor, part of the safety system. It works by centrifugal force. The faster it turns, the farther out the balls will fly. It does not control the normal speed, but actuates a trip mechanism when an overspeed occurs, and causes an emergency stop.

May you share technical details? Like speed and travel distance? What is mean of east and west?
@MrEngineer200515 жыл бұрын
The meaning of East and West is the actual Elevators. There is an East Elevator, and a West Elevator. One goes up, while the other one goes down. Those dials are showing you where they are in the shaft. Know what I mean?
@TheTheo584 жыл бұрын
@@MrEngineer20051 Thus works in the same principal as an aerial tramway one car goes up, while the other come down. In the case of these elevators the principal of a winding drum elevator with two elevator cabs. One side of the drum rope splay out for east car, other side for car west. With the open frame hoist motor, I presume it is DC powered by a an MG set or DC Drive.

It would not be too surprising if hoist operators had a special status within the mining community, similar to how mine rescuers are called Dräger-Men after the company name of their equipment.

The motor seems to be similar to a generator in construction. Maybe its a DC motor?
@TheAmazingAdventuresOfMiles6 ай бұрын
It's a 3 phase AC motor. Yes very similar to the alternator used on a generator of the time, in fact with some simple modifications they are pretty much interchangeable.

Why most elevators in mineshaft uses machine like this instead of the ones based on the normal elevator we can see in high rise buildings?
@KingdaToro2 жыл бұрын
They need to be able to lift the mined material out of the mine, and the more they can carry in one load, the more profitable the mine will be.

Safety govenenor for overspeed and free fall protection
@joco93554 ай бұрын
Yep, due to centrifugal force the balls fly outwards when the shaft spins, if the shaft happens to speed up too fast, the balls fly out higher and the rods they connect to push down on a valve that starts limiting the speed. They're also seen on old fashion steam engines to ensure that just enough steam enters the cylinders to maintain a certain speed.
