Hello Melisa Kelly [ @thatmelisakelly ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community 🤘

They always sqy "Evanescence" because they're American, and it's the only band that as a similar setup. Here in the States, the music industry isn't interested in the music, it's all about the cash, so if it has sold a million copies, they'll be fifteen identical sounding releases the following week. Most of us have never heard of Nightwish, so this is earth shaking to most of us. I, personally, don't listen to much American music, because we have such an uneducated audience, so I trun to Europe for my music. Most will agree at the end of the song that there is no comparison between Amy and Floor, butit's still their only reference. They don't know Within Temptation or Epica, or any of the great number of female fronted Metal bands ... it's just our ignorance.

Floor Jansen is widely (not only in the metal scene) regarded as one of the best female vocalists right now. She started performing at 16 (she is now 41 I believe). She studied 4 years rock academy, then 2 years classical training at the music university (conservatorium) and on top of that 6 years of coaching by a musical theatre teacher. I think I read that she also had some coaching from Ann Wilson. She calls herself a vocal nerd and perfectionist. She is sensitive, an empath and over all a very nice person to work with (despite perfectionism). Her styles are metal/rock, musical theatre and classical opera (in that order). I do not know of any style of singing that she did not do in public at least once (and to perfection). She just released a solo pop album "My Paragon" because she never explored the "pop" side of her musicality before.

No one can point at one song and say, this is a typical Nightwish song because they are all different and cover different genres. Floor is the Dutch Army Knife of vocalists in that she can sing any genre. Pop, rock, metal, classical, opera, growling, belting, she does is all. My favorite singer and band. I enjoyed your reaction and hope you do more Nightwish.

Their lead singer is a classically trained soprano Simone Simons, another metal goddess. I would suggest to start with something not too heavy but epic and beautiful: EPICA - Unleashed (Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKnHZ6augd2Xr9U or if you want to start with a wonderful ballad: EPICA - Trois Vierges (Live) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y17JdJmPq5pgqZY

Nightwish is one of the very few bands that came to America in 2004 as tour headliners, and had never opened for anyone on a US/ Canada tour before that... They would play occasional shows in N. America before that, but in 2004, they were already drawing huge crowds in Europe and South America, but they had to play clubs in the US between 2004 and 2008... and even though they changed female lead singers from Tarja (the original) to Anette Olzen... to Floor Jansen (in mid-tour!), Nightwish built their fanbase in N. America w/ ZERO radio or video airplay. I became a fan in 2001 because Century Media (their US label at the time) did a great job marketing the band in metal magazines and features, so I picked up the 3rd album "Wishmaster" (2000) and the voice of Tarja Turunen was just like a shot to my head... I went and bought all their records...and I finally got to see them on a club tour in the US in late 2004 (which was Tarja's last w/ Nightwish... she was sacked in 2005). Nightwish was formed in the mid-90's in Finland, when keyboardist/composer/ lyricist Tuomas Holopainen envisioned an acoustic project and enlisted friends from the music scene to record demos, including 18 year-old female vocalist Tarja Turunen, who was operatically trained... Her voice inspired Tuomas to write more songs in the vein of heavy metal songs backed by a symphony orchestra in sound and style... Finnish label Spinefarm Records signed Nightwish in 1997 and released their debut album 'Angels fall first' ... Jukka (drums) and Emppu (guitars) were in the band w/ Tuomas and Tarja, but they needed a bassist to play live, so Sami (bass) was added so that they could play concerts. 2nd album 'Oceanborn' and the single 'Sleeping sun' followed in 1998 as Nightwish built more fanfare in Europe... By 2000, they were signed worldwide for the 3rd album 'Wishmaster'... but in 2001, Sami was replaced by veteran Finnish bassist/ vocalist Marco Hietala... who would provide the band's male lead vocals. Tuomas recalled making the 4th album 'Century Child' in 2002, when he was in dark place mentally and wrote very tormented songs, because he felt the pressure from naysayers and the music business that wore him out... He felt that he had 'lost his innocence'... he was no longer writing songs for pleasure, but to please the labels and the fans... He contemplated ending Nightwish, but eventually changed his mind. 5th album 'Once' (2004) was a hit across the board and Nightwish was playing arenas on that tour, but still needed to break in N. American markets... It was around that time that Tarja allegedly began making more demands and taxing the band members' patience, in order to agree to sign up for tours... In 2005, a 2nd US tour was cancelled because the money was not as lucrative for Tarja as the other dates... Finally, Tarja revealed that she was planning on recording a solo album and that was the last straw. After a triumphant homecoming show in Helsinki, Nightwish handed an 'open letter' to Tarja afterwards to terminate her from the band... The news shocked the fans of Nightwish worldwide... Tuomas was also uncertain whether Nightwish would continue, but he worked on new songs for months on end... and finally opted to look for a new female lead singer. Anette Olzen was an unusual choice to join Nightwish; she was a pop singer from Sweden and did not have an operatic voice. However, the new album, the first w/ Anette on vocals, 'Dark passion play' in 2007 became the biggest-selling album in Nightwish's career. Anette did have a lot of Tarja fans mock and ridicule her while she was in the band... As Nightwish toured extensively into 2009, it seemed that Anette would work out eventually... However, when the next concept album 'Imaginaerum' by Nightwish was released in 2011, the band went on tour in 2012 w/ Anette pregnant w/ another child... She apparently struggled to perform at the level she had on previous tours... Finally, a US tour in 2012 proved problematic - Anette was rushed to the hospital just before a Denver show and the band had to scramble together a performance w/ the female vocalists of their opening band Kamelot... It was clear that Anette would not last the tour, so the decision was made to call Dutch singer Floor Jansen (whose band After Forever had opened for Nightwish)... Floor was taking a break, but agreed to fill-in for Anette if she was unable to tour... Floor was called to learn the Nightwish set in 48 hrs as she was flown to the US to salvage the tour and Anette was sent home. Both Floor and British multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley were hired after the tour and debuted on their 2015 album 'Endless forms most beautiful'... original drummer Jukka Nevalainen announced his departure and Kai Hahto (drums) joined... The last Nightwish album 'Human Nature' was released in 2020, but bassist/ vocalist Marco Hietala announced that he was leaving the band and Jukka Koskinen (bass) was tapped for the tour. Which brings us to their upcoming album... More Nightwish classics - 'Wishmaster'... 'Wish I had an angel'... 'Elan'... 'Amaranth'... 'Stargazer'... 'Noise'... 'Nemo'... 'Dark chest of wonders'... 'Bless the child' 🤘🤘🔥

Hey Melissa. I've been waiting for your reaction. I was one of those recommending Nightwish to you with a passion 😅 I'm glad you liked it, even though I had no doubt you would. How could you not, right? I liked it when you said that you expected them to go some way, but then they went in another direction. That's exactly what they will do to you, over and over again. Not all of their songs are cinematic, as you will find out when you explore their music further. They do however have some pretty epic ones of which 'The Greatest Show On Earth' is probably the most impressive one (and it's over 20 minutes long). I would recommend having a look at Gabriel Bardac's comment (he'll be here soon) for more song suggestions. He'll have a long list of them for you, as well as some useful background info. Looking forward to your next Nightwish reaction. Regards from the Netherlands and take care!

Hi Melisa;welcome to the Nightwish family. In fact, Floor is classically trained and has also sung opera. In addition, she was also trained at the Rock Academy. The only typical thing about Nightwish is that there are no bad songs and no song sounds like another. How many singers do you know who can jump in to such a famous band during an ongoing world tour and learn a complete setlist within 48 hours. Floor was able to do that and thrilled the fans of a sold-out house on the 2nd day. I hope that a very long journey with Nightwish and Floor has begun for you and that you will continue to share it with us.

It's become a hobby for myself (and many others) to watch people react to this performance in particular. Always great watching people discover the greatness that is Floor Jansen and Nightwish! I would say this is fairly typical for them, though they have songs that lean more pop, others that lean more power metal, others that lean more folk, etc. They're a pretty multi-faceted band, but this cinematic "symphonic metal" is their bread-and-butter and the genre they helped to pioneer. Ever Dream would be a great second listen. It's a simpler song, but shows their ear for catchy pop-esque melodies in this symphonic metal style. If you want to keep to the epics then The Poet and the Pendulum is a good one.

Sharing the same hobby HAHA! That's why I'm here, although this is maybe the most reacted-to song of all times. I nowadays do the same with a band from another genre: hard rock. The Warning from Mexico are playing it like they invented that genre. Incapable of writing a bad song. I got intoxicated when listening to "Narcisista". The press had stepped on their nerves, asking them: "You're from Mexico. You should sing in spanish!" Answer: "Our music: our choice!" So: this song IS in spanish. For the last idiot to finally understand, back in their homeland. In my book: the maybe best hard rock band of our days above the grass. Pls take a look and tell me what you found. Greetings from the far north of Germany!

"Thunderous" and "triumphant" pretty much sums up this whole performance, but even more so in a Scottish accent, just felt so fitting and apt. Nightwish had two other singers before Floor as you mentioned. The first was Tarja Turunen, who has a much more operatic style, and the next was Anette Olzon, who was more pop. They were both really good but Floor bridges the two styles in a way those two singers didn't. What you were saying about trained singers not knowing what to do with themselves outside of their discipline is absolutely correct, but it does not apply to Floor, who may be one of the most versatile singers I've ever heard.

There are no typical Nightwish songs and if continue on this journey you will see, every new song is different, a new story. Floor is called by many Valkyrie Goddess or Queen of Metal, and has fronted metal bands since she was 17, she is 42 now. She also just released a solo pop album last month. No there is no mold you can pour her into, she considers herself a vocal nerd, and can sing any style she chooses. She can growl too, she doesn't do it often these days but can still comfortably do that then switch on a dime to contemporary or operatic. Every singer has helped the band get better, even Annette. With Floor, the band is the best they have ever been. Tarja was great but wouldn't go the extra mile that Floor does. Tarja had her operatic style and wouldn't do anything beyond that, she was good at the time but made herself redundant

An excellent reaction! Being a trained singer yourself ( you have a great set of pipes btw) you give good insight as to what makes great vocals and also how the dynamics and structure of a song are so important. I know you will enjoy Floor’s diverse vocal abilities and the stunning musicianship of the rest of the band if you continue your Nightwish journey. I see General Gabriel of the Nightwish army has already been in touch. Let him be your guide and stick to live performances from 2013 onwards and you can’t go far wrong. Looking forward to your next Nightwish reaction. Liked and subbed.

The first time I saw this performance I was amazed. It wasn't only bc of the Hollywood Blockbusteresque stage presentation. It was that, with everything going on in the background, Floor was still able to command my attention without appearing as if she was trying to do so. She was just a strong, calm, captivating figure amidst a stormy sea of musical mayhem! Nightwish's Phantom Of The Opera is a great performance too. It features a different singer, Tarja Turunen, and her more classical vocal style.

Nothing is 'typical of Nightwish' - Toumas is a virtuoso and I truly believe he is composing the kinds of music that Rachmaninoff and Mozart would have with todays variety of musical instruments in play and wide genre's. The band does not make songs, the compose and perform musical pieces on whatever end of the musical scale that piece would be put into I'm thinking this piece as compared to Tribal or Yours is an empty hope.

Thanks Melisa. I will now forever have the image of Steve Buscemi wearing black leather, belting out Nightwish songs, stuck in my head! Nightwish has no shortage of these epic performances. Stick with their live stuff (use Gabriel's list as a guide). They have stuff that is harder, and they have some surprising songs that are quite intimate. They also have a few songs that are much grander in scope and emotion, but I would wait on those until you are more familiar with their catalog. It is fair to say that this song barely scratched the surface.

This is SO true, what you said about classically trained singers. I played for a few years with a classically trained singer in an experimental rock/grunge trio, and it was quite an adventure - for us all. I never thought, that it is so hard to be a rock singer if you already had a good training and professional solo evenings with classic German Lieder. She came into the band like "I want to learn rock vocals!" and I did not take that serious after I heard what she already did. And then it was so much more of a learning process than I ever thought. In the end, I learned a few background vocals too, which was also quite an adventure after my quirky school choir experience, LOL. Yeah. So now you did it. Nightwish. Trillions of new subscribers in the next days. 😀 I guess Floor Jansen was pretty floored to have the chance to be a rock Valkyrie in a known symphonic rock band. And she does pretty well! And people obviously like it! If you are into classical influences in metal - I always have a great recommendation. Also one of the great favorites of Brittney Slayes! The Italian symphonic technical death metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse. I swear, they have the greatest death metal piano ever. No joke. They have. Best regards, and have a nice week. Always appreciate your videos! PS: I don't feel threatened! WHAT A CLICKBAIT!

Although the band is Finnish, their 3rd singer is not, she is Dutch, lives with her husband Hannes van Dahl, the drummer of the band Sabaton and daughter in Sweden. Floor was born on Februari 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career (initially) just as the background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997, but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocalrange runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program De tiende van Tijl. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 (while she was within ReVamp, but recovering from a burnout) Floor replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. After one year (shortly after the Wacken Open Air festival concert 2013) on October 9th 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer. Is this real live? If you’ll have any doubts watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKKno36lj5tlrbM the evolution of Ghost Love Score. Nightwish, After Forever and ReVamp worked under the same Nuclear Blast record label. Tuomas and Floor know each other since August 20th, 2002 when Nightwish played in a sold-out and swelteringly hot “Hof Ter Lo” in Antwerp with After Forever and Charon as support act. To clarify Cradle of Filth are not Symphonic. They are an extreme metal band that derives from Black metal influence but they wanted to make a cleaner version of Black metal stylistic vocal choices. If you want Symphonic you'd be looking at Epica and Ayreon and bands like that. Ayreon's the day when the world breaks down and really the whole album that song comes from is representative of some of the big names in Symphonic metal. Symphonic metal also not to be confused with Power metal which is a subgenre of its own. Dead Boy's Poem might be my favourite Nightwish song. The lyricism is just beautiful and the poetry really speaks to me as a poet myself.

Great technical review! I prefer to hear skilled people talk about the voice and music as opposed to just basically fans or not, commenting. That being said yes this is our Valkyrie Goddess Floor, all glorious 6 ft of her! ...... And yes everything Nightwish does is hugely Cinematic!! Thanks to Tuomas Holopainen the keyboardist who writes and composes everything. Oh my gosh so much to recomend..... of course the mandatory rest of this concert, Storytime, Everdream, Romanticide, Song of myself, are stand outs...... But there is seemingly no end to this band. You want the most cinematic ever? Poet and the Pendulum from Wembley, and Greatest Show on Earth from Tampere Finland...... Both epic beyond measure. You want the feels? Dead Boys Poem from Buenos Aires....... You want the purest most intimate Floor vocals? Then you need to watch the acoustic version of How's the Heart a duet of just Troy on acoustic guitar and Floor's vocals...... oh and probably the most difficult song to sing that anyone wouldn't want to attempt to cover, lol ..... Then there's Floors solo work on Beste Zangers! All knock outs! Phantom, Shallow, and others ..... Her solo concert in Amsterdam a year or two ago is sublime ..... she IS a Babe!!!

The epicness is typical but they produce a wide range of “feel” within each song. Yes, Floor “effortlessly” changes colors & styles and is also an awesome storyteller using vivid expression & body language in addition to her vocal stylings & choices. You can’t go wrong in song choice but some live shows are better recorded than others so follow suggestions as to which versions to watch. Wacken 2013 is just a magical show. You should start with the show opener, Dark Chest of Wonders, and just run through them in the set list order. Enjoy!!

"I expected it to go one way, but it completely went a different direction." Please prepare yourself for saying that... a lot 😁 If there is one thing that Nightwish has taught me over the last 4 to 5 years, it is that meaning of conventional approaches (for instance in pop music) is not their cup of tea. The writer of the songs (keyboard player) likes to colour (way) outside the lines and dares to go whete no other would even think to go.
