I used to see Johnny Jones with the Swansea Quintet. Never knew he sang with the Soul Stirrers. He killed "When the gates swing open". I was never a fan of his work before this. Excellent performance.

I heard JJ in an interview with deejay Linwood Heath discuss Johnny Jones singing with the Soul Stirrers. He stated Johnny left them to go back to the Swannees because the Swannees only performed on the weekend while the Soul Stirrers were performing every night. Johnny was smooth. I enjoy seeing him and Percy perform together with the Swanee Quintet. Jacox had Howlin Wolf's style down packed.

Rev. Paul Foster is my favorite of the soul stirrers lead vocalist he could go from tight background harmony to the exciting exhortation of the lead vocal
@DeepGospelSound2 жыл бұрын
I agree - he's one of the all-time quartet greats. He'd left the Soul Stirrers by the time of this recording, but made so many great records with them during 1950-64.

The Soul Stirrers made so many great records. If you don't know them already, check out their Checker and Jewel recordings. The 1936 Five Soul Stirrers sides are very nice - I don't think they're currently available but I might upload them at some point.

The Soul Stirrers had many different lineups over the years. Was there ever a bad one? If so, I have yet to hear it.

I thought that was Johnny Jones, his voice has a certain quality that the others don't have, although I liked Jimmy Outler's voice too as a Soul Stirrers lead, besides Sam and Johnny Taylor, thank you Deep Gospel Sound for sharing these particular recordings - including my fav Violinnaires from 1972. I wish I could have been at that show - wow!

@DeepGospelSound4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is - on this recording, the lineup was Jesse J Farley, Johnny Jones, Martin Jacox, Arthur Crume and Rufus Crume. If you like Johnny Jones, check out this film of him with the Swanee Quintet in 1959 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpeylqKZjNmoaZI

Did Johnny influence Willie Rogers, or was it the opposite? This is my first time hearing this.

They were both influenced by Sam Cooke, but Willie Rogers has his own spin on it.

@@KingMellow11 I'm not sure but I do know that this was one of the times the Soul Stirrers needed a lead singer to assist them.. they were able to get JJ. because he had sang with them previously.. According to JJ Farley Johnnie Jones was there first choice to replace Sam.. If I'm not mistaken Willie Rogers was doing a stent in the Army..You also had two sets of Soul Stirrers..JJ Farley and Martin Jacox , ..the other set was the Crume Brothers..both were good and had various lead singers who sounded similar to the leads of the other groups..LOL..I Sang lead with them for a while..
