Soulful Wolf Howl

Nikai is a captive-born gray wolf at the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), a 501c3 non-profit organization, in South Salem, NY. He is one of the three 'ambassador wolves' at the WCC that help teach the public about wolves and their vital role in the environment.

Believe it or not, I assist in raising wolves during my nights off. I do everything from helping deliver the cubs to rehabilitating injured wolves to reenter the wild. Some can not reenter the wild and are acclimated to human company so they may live out their days in the preserve. They may become part of the breeding effort, or remain sheltered in the preserve. Some of they hybrid wolves may be adopted for companion animals after several intense interviews and screenings. Some may be part of an education programme to show wolves are not the bloodthirsty, grandma-eating, Little Red Riding Hood devouring, demon dogs the ranchers have indoctrinated the public to think they are. I, myself live with one injured wolf that can never return to the wild and an orphaned wolf that has always been with humans. They are my companions and friends, not pets. They may have dog-like characteristics but are not pets. They must not be addressed as such nor thought of as such.
