I absolutely love Shetland wool! I’m a lace knitter, fell in love with Shetland lace patterns, which naturally progressed into spinning my own lace-weight yarn to knit with. This type pf wool has a lovely bloom to it and spun right it’s not scratchy but wonderfully soft. Ly daughter has high functioning autism. A light as a baby’s breath lace shawl knitted from Shetland wool yarn or a blend between shetland/silk/mohair is her favourite way to stay warm without any triggering sensory issues. It’s warm, soft, and so light and comfortable you barely feel it. There’s only softness. And warmth. Even in sub-zero weather. Thank you for sharing your love for Shetland wool and yarn!

@@SoulfulSpinning - It is a lovely mix! My neighbour told me she can source me some freshly shorn alpaca next season. Can’t wait to get my hands on it! Apparently a lot of people around here keep alpaca but have no idea what to do with the fleece (is that the correct term for alpaca? English isn’t my native language). I’ll have to get my hands on hand carders and combs. I wonder how alpaca will do combined with shetland wool. To me it sounds positively sinful… a delightful thought. Spinning is addictive. And it’s the perfect complement to my knitting. Thank you for your lovely videos. I thoroughly enjoy them!

I think your hand spun is beautiful. For your sweater, I would gradiate light to dark and do the sleeves in one color - probably the white. And btw - I am Australian and we don't pronounce anything correctly! It's your podcast, you can say what you want :)

Oops, I did not mean to end the last comment! Anyway bought Jamison yarn and thought it as terribly scratchy. I have changed my perception of it since watching today’s podcast. I have been spinning Cormo almost exclusively, but now am on the hunt for softer Shetland. Keep on talking to us about the different breeds of sheep! Love learning from you. I think the Jamieson softens considerably after washing and blocking, but it can’t compare to Cormo in terms of softness. It does feel ‘crisp’ in the hand and it’s perfect for long wearing sweaters. Not all wools can be worn next to skin for sure. But the superfine 1927 shetlands definitely can be. It’s great to hear from you. ‘See’ you soon on the next video!

I loved watching this! I breed Shetland sheep, I love the kindly fleeces. I’ve never actually seen a dual coated Shetland, now I’m curious and I’d love to get a fiber sample from someone… there is a LOT of controversy about what a proper Shetland is. I listen to people from Scotland, but I also just go by what I like. Whispering Pines has some of the most beautiful wool! I could talk about shetlands all day🤣

Oh my goodness I'm so excited about your jacob sweater! I love both ideas of fading or dramatic color changes. I might think the dramatic color changes would be more fun and striking! Oh please don't worry about how you say skein. It's like some people say soda some say pop. Really it's ridiculous that anyone would worry you over that! It's just a difference in region and accent!

Love your videos. I know this is two years ago. I love spinning, knitting and sheep. However in this time fibres have become so unattainable. It’s sooo so expensive now. When I started 9 years ago it was so easy to get into. I took a four year break and just trying to get my fleece stash started is daunting. It’s so sad how expensive it’s becoming. I have so many things I want to do and can’t. I hope prices will be better and come down.

It is funny and I also notice people saying it "wrong" but ultimately every country and every family even pronounces things slightly differently. Shetland is my favorite fleece because of the diversity of color and fiber quality. I recently worked with two entirely different fleeces, one was silky and had little crimp and the other was extremely crimpy.

I just discovered your podcast and am enjoying it very much. You say skein anyway you want to, is what I say. Goodness, we nitpick each other to no end! I am looking forward to seeing the progress of your sweater. I so enjoyed seeing all your spindles, too! So far I have been primarily a wheel spinner, but lately have been getting the urge to try supported spindle spinning. I have had some shoulder issues so think that might be easier ergonomically on my body, than the non-supported style, but that’s only guessing til I try it. I have so enjoyed watching you spin.

I am so lazy I just use my Mr. Coffee. I found a clear glass stove top coffee maker with all of the parts in my husbands storage shed, it's a percolator type that people actually still use.

I had a hard time telling the difference in the pronunciations to be honest, however my fiance said it was pretty evident - he also has an AeroPress espresso maker! I'm excited to see more and more of your sweater as it knits up! To be honest I just had 2 lbs of jacob arrive at my house, 1 lb lilac and 1 lb the traditional jacob color from yearlings and I'm so excited. I am going to get my hands on a fine shetland fleece (hopefully next year if I can control myself! :P) Also I must say you are almost at 2k subscribers. I'm so happy for you and you deserve it. It is evident you put a lot of time and care into each and every episode, and your enthusiasm and love for fleece really brings out my own.

Yes, Pat, that seems to be the consensus. Light to dark it is. If you want a really fine Shetland look for the 1927 mark. Then your pretty much guaranteed a fine fleece. Thank for continuing to watch the channel 💕.

Soulful Spinning I just signed up for long thread media subscription trial. I already own many interweave videos including Spinning Rare breeds. You would love that one because Deb just gushes over various breeds including Jacob and Shetland (if I remember correctly... definitely Shetland). This video inspired me to look at all of my lovely Shetland fleeces that I scoured last year. I have a wide variety. One is super super fine and super super short. I can’t imagine combing it. I’d be interested to hear how you carded your fine shetland

I think the pronunciation is regional. I'm only and hour or so south of you and I say it like you do. I was 49 years old before I ever heard it pronounced differently on a podcast.

I am a new spinner. I like woolen spun yarn. I have been told to always spin S. Not Z if I am going to knit with it not plyed. Is this correct? I had not heard this before, but I am new at this.

I’ve not heard that before. I always spin my singles clockwise (Z twist) even if I leave the yarns as a singles. I ply counterclockwise (S). I’ll have to research your question. I know depending on if you crochet or knit yarn may lose or gain twist. I think it may even matter if you knit continental or English style. Something to look into! Thank you for your question.

Again I find myself smiling like a goofball through the entire episode. I had noticed your pronunciation of skein but soon after decided that was how I am going to say it from now on! Couple other comments - Theresa has a web site where she sells her product - hope its ok to post link: under-the-son-farm.square.site/. Also I heard you say under your breath that you wish you could send wool in to get micron test, well you can! Needs to be raw lock, just send to Texas A&M with $ (I can't remember exactly, I can get you more detail if you like) and they send you all the data. We've done this before when considering purchasing a sheep, get a raw lock and then get the data. Easy peasy. Lovely episode, hilarious that you forgot you had a fleece. Binging old episodes, hoping in one of them you show us your storage space!!!
