"Chinese are not the same as Japanese, are not the same as Koreans, Filipinos, or Thai, or Indians..." We talked with people from a variety of Asian cultures about how they think the world sees them. How does the world see YOU? Do you feel defined by your skin color, gender, or maybe even your religion?

Asia is not only based on countries like China, Japan and Korea...there are also south East Asia like..(laos,canbodia,thailand,vietnam etc),south Asian..like (India,Nepal, srilanka etc..) middle East Asia like ..(UAE,Saudi Arabia,Oman etc..) , north west Asian... countries..like( Russia, turkey, Kazakhstan etc...)and also can found Racial diversity in Asia..

Simran Sucharita I totally agree! I’m a korean person living in the UK rn and one really interesting thing is that in Europe when you mention Asia people usually think of India and Pakistan, not East Asia! It’s the other way around in the US, I guess it has to do with politics and international relations but either way it’s both so dumb so many people don’t realize how massive the whole continent is

but the east Asian is apparently different from the rest people in asian , besides there is a hidden reason which is hard to admit is that the east Asian people are most powerful and wealthy in asian,so it's normal for western to think they are “narrow asians".If one day the rest Asia is as powerdul as east asia(china japan korea),so it''s normal for other continet people think oh they are from asia

Words can have a larger or narrower sense, I don't think it matters. When you say "an American" do Canadians and Latin Americans count? When you think of "Africans" would you think of an Arab? For the term "Asians", for me, it's either Asian The Race: East and Southeast Asians, or the people from the continent Asia, including Isrealis, Saudi Arabians, Iranians, Indians, Japanese, etc. I don't think you could include South Asians and exclude West Asians at the same time. What's more, different places have different habits of using the term. I'm Chinese but when I'm in the UK I would buy into the habit of refering "British Asians" as South Asians and myself as East Asians, because I know they are neither ignorant or offensive, it's just their habit.

I dont know why ppl put those unrelated countries together.. As for European, yoj can easily find some similar features among them. But as for Asian, what are the common features of Asian? Poor? No,japan, singapore are rich than Europe. Asian face? No,south asia and middld east are more like European. Culture?? That is the most different thing.

I think to the girl Rachel's point, even most Indians would immediately try to figure out what she is since her name is not a Hindu or Muslim name. So they would try to ask for her surname and if it's not a "Christian" surname, they would try to figure out why her name is Rachel.

It's so ridiculous that when I was a kid, being an Asian, Filipino to be exact, America is like a dream of mine. To go there and live an American life beause I often watch Hollywood shows. But as I grow up, hearing stories and watching these kinds of shows, it lessens my desire to live in the US. Yes, it's nice to live there, but if you're living in a society where people keeps on belittling you and where you came from, it's just pure toxicity. I'm proud of being Asian and Filipino. I'm not going to live anywhere. I may travel and work abroad but Asia will always be my home. Southeast Asia is always going to be my home. It is where I belong, where I don't have to conform to the American standards of beauty, ideals, and culture.

Isnt "miss understood" the wrong term? The entire US culture is based on a collage of cultures where no one should get to be in the middle. White europeans where the lout speaking majority, and tagging along with Christianity they got to stay in the middle. So when it comes to asian... it applies to africans, tons of latinos (not everyone is Mexican) etc... The "good" thing, is that asians dont get to be racially miss treated (or do you?), if at all, you get to be strongly stereotyped...

People assuming where I'm from really annoys me. I migrated to Australia so this happens much more often. One time someone in my class said very loudly 'WHY IS THERE ONLY ONE ASIAN IN OUR CLASS'. He then looked at me and was like 'oh, sorry. Nevermind'. And even though this was such a tiny thing it still made me smile knowing that people don't just assume I'm Indian and also don't think Indians aren't Asian. If I tune out & just focus on my actual interactions (ppl still will watch), I guess it takes some pressure off. Maybe I just become less mysterious, less of an intrigue? But somexs ppl really will just say about anything. All I ever think about in my head is stuff like I never asked. I didn't know we was banging. Why am I supposed to care. If ppl really knew how I thought. Bish, u's a whale tho. If u wanna act like that.. Really have no clue y u're obsessed w/ me anyways... Otherwise, u can actually go about ur own lane. K thx. Văn Tiến Nguyễn not true, mixed race means "2 of 2 Seperate DNA that have more DNA than any other one". For example, since I'm half african and half european(48% and 48% just guessing) and 2 other races that are 2%, that's what mixed race is. 2 races that have more DNA than any other

I'm Cambodian-American (Southeast Asian). As a kid, I learned that yes you can have brown skin and be Asian. My parents came to the U.S as refugees and I was born in California. Growing up, adults would say that I speak English well and point out my parent's "heavy" Cambodian accent to compare. My parents didn't teach their kids Khmer because they wanted us to speak English better. I'm lucky to understand Khmer despite not knowing how to read or write in it. Overall, my parents are just as American as I am and as they are the 1st generation to settle their roots here.

Some of these experiences are not exclusive to Asians. I am Colombian and Salvadorian. We are often overlooked and subjected to one view of a Latino, and that is of a Mexican. Colombian roles are often played by non-Colombians in Hollywood. A great example of this is Manny form Modern Family whom I already knew was Mexican American before I even looked him up on Wikipedia. Personally, it is a tremendous pet peeve of mine because there are many differences between us in culture, dialect and appearance. Many people, especially non-Latinos, mistake me for being Mexican (but Latinos that know better don't think that) which goes to show ignorance is across the board. A couple things I wish people understood about Latinos are: 1) we do not all look the same and 2) we are racially AND ethnically diverse. Sure, many of us share similar features for being mixed with the Indigenous, but even Indigenous people have some distinctive features from each other, after all, they spanned the mass of two continents!

Honestly I love Asian culture. I also never got the stereotype that Asians were unattractive because I've always found Asians to be the most attractive but that might be because I grew up around a lot of Asians. Also to be honest no one can tell Chinese from Japanese from Korean all the time... just like I can't tell if someone is Italian, German or Swedish. Ethnicities are hard to tell apart... sometimes race is hard to tell too. I see Asians as everyone else and I see people as individuals I honestly "don't get racism".

Alex idk. I've got " for an asian, you're attractive. & I don't find Asians attractive." W/ twists here & there. But basically meaning the same. You know how you delusionaly think your a rep., then check yourself? But sometimes you just know, you'll do it over & over again. Response in my head goes like this. ?k. I dont understand ppl who think they can tell others apart & guess.. Or ppl who think everyone looks the same. Ppl like that sound like they've lived in their comfortable tiny bubbles for too long
