I'll sum up a discussion that we did some months ago in a community, when we came to a conclusion on Rod Reiss titan. Some psychological aspects of a subject of Ymir might slightly influence his titan transformation (Ymir wasn't a warrior and she's different from Marcel and Porco, Armin almost looks like a depressed colossal titan, etc.) and his pure titan behavior. But that is not the main reason why Rod Reiss' titan is this monstrosity. The fact that his spine was broken is not important and has nothing to do with it. The fact that he licked the serum instead of injecting it in his arm may have had some sort of influence, but again: it is not the main reason. The reason of this transformation is the special spinal fluid in that syringe: it was labeled "most powerful titan" by Rod. While Isayama never specified what fluid it was, I think we can come to understand it thanks to some subtle clues. So... It's very very very likely that the coward kept Uri or Frieda's spinal fluid in that serum, which was extracted when they were alive! Uri and Frieda turned into pure titans in releatively "peaceful" times inside the walls, so they transformed with a standard serum. But now that Wall Maria has been destroyed by an external threat, Rod thought that he should have given this specific serum to Historia: a serum with Founding Titan spinal fluid! There are actually many clues that can support this idea and honestly, unless Isayama explicitly said otherwise, for me it is so obvious that I'll hardly accept that this is not the truth... 1) Rod worshipped the Founding Titan like a god, so it's likely that he thought that it was the most powerful one (which is not really false, but not in terms of brute force. The Colossal Titan is the strongest one in terms of brute force) and so he labeled the serum that way. 2) He said: "Father, Uri, Frieda... wait for me" before licking the fluid, probably because he thought that he would have inherited their memories as soon as he transformed into a titan thanks to their fluid. 3) His reaction when Historia smashed the serum is unnatural: he goes mad and looks desperate, as if that was the only remaining serum. But there were actually other serums in the bag that could have been used to turn Historia into a titan. So that "most powerful titan" serum was really important to him and was probably the only one he had. Also it should be noted that, despite being a sneaky coward who never had the balls to inherit the Founding Titan and the fact that he never managed to show it properly, he loved his brother and daughter and losing that serum would have meant losing everything he had about them and any possibility to "meet" them again. Now... probably the most important clue: MANGA SPOILERS ahead . . . . . . . . . . . . 4) Rod pure titan looks EXACTLY like the Founder Ymir's Founding Titan and Eren's Founding Titan: a really long titan that mainly moves on all fours (Ymir does that in chapter 122, page 16 while Eren does it all the time probably beacuse he transformed when beheaded, so he never fully transformed: the titan just went out his decapitated head). Then, Rod could only crawl because his weight was too much to bear, while Eren instead also had the Warhammer Titan that could make him move faster. Rod transformation is also IDENTICAL to Eren's transformation at the end of chapter 122. So this is why Rod's titan is probably just a "pure titan version" of the Founding Titan.

I have a theory where Rod Reiss isn't at his full size, if you can read Japanese, the vial Rod used said "Strongest Titan", so it would be assumed Historia would turn into... "That", also, Rod didn't inject the vial, but rather licked it off the floor, so maybe that affected it, making him have smaller than average limbs, a deformed Titan, and smaller than he should be, my theory on his true height? 3 times bigger than Colossal Titan, instead of the 2 times with the wall. My other theory on how Rod is so big is that he was going to inject Historia with a Collosal Titan serum, after all, the vial in Japanese says "Strongest Titan", and the Collosal Titan is the strongest. Historia then proceeds to slap the syringe away, and break Rod's back. He then crawls to the serum, and gets the size of the Collosal Titan, but something goes wrong. Since Rod is of Royal Blood, he grows larger than he should've, about twice the original size (My proof on how this is true is the Smiling Titan, she's taller than most Titans would be, whuch is not 14 meters, it's less. and she is Dina Fritz, a person of Royal Blood). The reason why Rod crawls? Historia broke Rod's back, so that has to have some sort of impact on the Titan, or possibly, like Dina's smiling face, Rod's back was disfigured. Another reason for Rod's back is that his legs and arms weren't the right size (either from being deformed, or that the place he transformed in (the blue, now _destroyed_ cave) was too tight to hold him, and it squeezed his sorry arms and legs).

The reason why the others weren't all that big is because I think the serum also has an inhibitor to it. Which would make sense for offering place to be designed to that certain height. How the serum was made I don't know, could be the founder Titan could change it's size going off the picture book.
