Ren is agnostic. During the really bad times, Ren delved into different religions in search of answers. He didn't find answers, but I think he did like some of the things he learned. As any RENegade can hear, he uses Christian/biblical references in quite a few songs. As a Zen Buddhist, I have heard almost as many references to the Buddhist teachings/beliefs. The line about the castle made of sand when he says 'their impermanence is enlightenment' is one example. Impermanence and enlightenment are Buddhist teachings. Ya know what strikes me about Ren's health issues? As an independent artist, he is reaching new heights. However, as such, it's on him to find the right treatment and get the help he needs. Ironically, had he signed with a label, I'd be willing to bet that label head would have the absolute finest care in the World at his home in the UK because they wouldn't want to lose their gravy train. NOT because they care about the man! As Ren says in Genesis, "life is ironically fucking me chronically" 😥

He had signed with Sony very early on. They dropped him when he got sick. Late stage capitalism and innate ableism fucked him but being independent allowed him to write the music that he wanted.

If you listen to Ren's interview with Justin Hawkins, he had nothing but nice things to say about Sony. He wasn't dropped - his contract expired when he had no idea if he'd ever be well again. When he made Freckled Angels, if he asked Sony if he could use the tracks he'd made under contract with them and they gave them to him.

Those signed to the big labels will be cared for, those that have the courage to go independent are sadly on their own in all aspects of life, including healthcare.
