Most of the time you want rapid fire gear changes, but in the case of the LFA the gear changes are actually part of the drama. They are so delayed and so slow that it’s almost as if it’s cleansing your auditory palate for each successive gear. It’s truly a masterpiece.

@@Soh90 for well over half a million dollars in the mid 2000s it was slow and expensive. And if we are talking about experience, it’s heavy and not particularly responsive. It frankly wasn’t a good car. Only the engine note was notable.
@joost1120
@joost1120 Жыл бұрын
@@THESLlCK ??? It wasn't slow, nor was it really expensive for what it is. It isn't heavy either. It weighs 50kg more than the Ferrari 458 it competed against. The 458 does 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, the LFA in 3.6 seconds. The 458 does a lap of the Nurburgring in 7:33, the LFA in 7:38. Then Lexus came out with the Lexus LFA Nurburgring package, which smashed the 458 with a time of 7:14.64, making it the 7th fastest road-legal production car on that track at the time. But even the base LFA was a proper fast car. Loads of groups tested them on different tracks, and it performed great everywhere. It set the fastest wet lap at the Top Gear test track, the third fastest lap at the US Top Gear test track and the fastest lap time at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours despite freezing temperatures. Auto Zeitung tested it against the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG at Contidrom test track, which is also where Continental tests tire performance. They had a similar top speed, but the LFA had a shorter brake distance and smashed the Benz by 2 seconds with a 1:35.66 lap time. Auto Zeitung concluded "The LFA dominates the AMG Mercedes SLS in the manner of a precise formula racer". They praised the LFA's race car-like response and handling. Jay Leno reviewed the LFA and was very impressed with it, stating that it was one of the greatest supercars ever built. He said there might be other cars out there that could individually do things better than the LFA, but no other car does everything so extremely well. I really have no idea where you are getting your opinions from. By all accounts, reports, tests and experiences, the LFA was a very fast road-legal production car.

@@THESLlCK It’s was $375,000, not half a million. And now they’re worth over $1,000,000……. Guess the car spoke for itself. I’m not some LFA zealot, but thinking that the only value of a car is in its raw performance is deeply flawed and shows that you are an average consumer, not an enthusiast.

There are just so many things going on within LFA's noise, it's so refined, yet so distinctively organic, it also doesn't shatter your ear buds or tear up your brain like a lot of high-pitch engines, it's literally an instrument, and is being masterfully played by something alive.

I was working at MAHLE when they started putting TDI into upperclass and didnt want it to sound like tractors. No active sound but frequency filtering, resonance, dampening... BMW Z4 and VW gti already had sound modules from MAHLE i think... The Ford Focus RS had a different style membrane one.. We did a setup for an Audi A3 ranging from two stroke chainsaw to nasty racing engine. Biggest bonus: you get a nice motor sound and feedback, while not annoying every living beeing around. Volume and noise doesnt equal sound. If your engine needs that to get down your road at walking speed its broken..

If only the LFA never had a time limit for the release, it's one of if not THE best car EVER made. Sadly, the world refused to wait for the lfa (9 years in the making) to get better. That was Toyota's goal. The first sound they played was absolutely and without question a Honda 4-cyl engine. I guessed the B18C from the Integra type R, but thought it might also have been the F20C from the AP1 S2000. I knew the GT350 the moment it started. The sound is very identifiable, even though the driver wasn’t taking it up to 8200RPM. I would pause and write my guesses down as they went along, and was appalled that they tried to claim both clips came from the GT350. Somebody screwed up their game!!

I would definitely rank the 787B higher. And you don't give it enough credit as a race car. True, it did run at a lighter weight than the other cars in group C at LeMans that year, but it was also the most reliable car there that year, and the most fuel efficient. Two things that you wouldn't normally associate with a rotary, unless you truly know rotaries that is. I think if you heard these cars in person, you would find it much more dramatic than in the audio clips you provided.

The LFA, Ferrari F40, Mazda 787B and Porsche GT3s are some of the best sounding cars imo. But the RS3 has a great sounding engine, most of why I wanted to buy one. That clip was such a bad example, there are way better clips out there for that 2.5L 5 cylinder. Also, the Audi Sport Quattro has a similar engine and sounds AMAZING. Yamaha also harmonically tuned everything in the LFA but they specifically tuned the exhaust to make it sound good, unlike the 4AGE and JZ engines, where they designed the heads. And how can you say the 787B is not a good race car? It was a fuckin BOSS, the engineers stripped the engine down after the race and said it could've done ANOTHER 24 hours, as the wear was so minimal! Respect -100 for James Pumphrey 😂
