81-717/714 is a metro car designed in the Soviet Union in the mid-1970s. The cars were made from 1976 to 2010 by Metrovagonmash and the I. E. Yegorov Vagonmash factories of Mytishchi and Saint Petersburg, respectively. Production is still ongoing for specific models and/or modernizations.
The name 81-717 and 81-714 come from the Soviet electric rail vehicle numbering system, where the 81-717 cars are the control cars and the 81-714 are the trailer cars. Unlike the previous metro sets made in the Soviet Union, they never received a lettered classification, thus, they have been known as the 81-series or the "Number Trains" (Номерной Поезд). The "number trains", as they are known colloquially among railfans and some commuters, feature restyled front ends, stronger electric traction motors, complex and wider usage of various electronic devices, and are more advanced than their predecessors, the E-series, with the biggest difference being lack of control desks at every end of each car (despite all cars being motorized, though).
They were first deployed in Moscow and Prague in 1978, and have since then seen widespread usage in the former USSR and in Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and Sofia in European Union.

Love when they have the aggressive doors that seem like they can chop your arm off, the buzzing or the whirring of the engine when idle, the mean acceleration that sounds like a tie-fighter, the M on the front that seems like the logo of a rock band. Hope they never ever replace these for good, for some fluorescent modern garbage. These are a true gem, need to be appreciated more as a feat of Soviet engineering and reliability.

the buzz when idling is from high voltage transformer (750V to 12V so it can power lights and audio)

Well, the title "A living legend of metro trains" suits 81-717 very well. Srsly, just look up how many cities still uses these trains, either unchanged or modified.

@@h1suke it i worth to notice that is works all the time, not only when the train is not moving. Just other sounds overpower that buzz when the train is on move :D The system is calles БПСН (BPSN), i.e. Блок Битания Собственных Нужд, which is a Block of Self Need Supplementation or or a Block of Self Needed electirification, you know, that kind of thing. It converts 825 v to 220 v and 80 v to get the lightings everywhere and all the stuff in operator's cabin work

This, is a living legend of metro trains. I am not lying, most people interested about metro trains know 81-717 very well. Also these trains are still in use in many cties either unchanged or modified. For example, in Prague, these trains are still in use, but they were reconstructed and reconstructed version is called 81-717M.
