Seems more ideal if the printer were elevated and microphones could be placed around and no sound is absorbed or reflected by the ground.

Depends on the product. Sound power standards often require a reflecting plane. For example, a car would have a reflecting plane underneath to simulate the effect of the road. A sound power measurement on a refrigerator would have a reflecting plane underneath and behind it to simulate a floor and a wall.
