I love the FM sounds on these old Yamaha keyboards. I have the very similar PSS-480, and I also have a PSS-270 that I circuit bent (cut data lines) to create infinite, random FM sounds 😀

I have a PSS 580 which is quite similar with 49 mini keys and about the same size case. It has no sliders (they really look great to use on yours!) but it comes with some very basic FM synth controls and MIDI in and out. It also doesn't have the greatest of sounds and rhythms (I have other full size 61 key Yamaha keyboards for a better performance) but it is useful as a small, very portable and self-contained instrument and also as a MIDI controller. AND, it was free to me! Always a bonus to find a bargain "Blast From The Past"!

Sounds great! I've been meaning to figure out how to made those sliders take CV input for handfree use.

I opened up the unit and found extremely difficult a mod like that. Those sliders are running over a graphite surface on the pcb and that’s Pretty tricky to modify. The chips are very well exposed and some circuit bent made on this machine must be done adding things out to their pins

@@audiowanderer Thanks for the info, I'll likely just stick with the single hand method.

The rhythm sounds may be bad, but they are better than other PSS keyboards.

Certainly they have a wide range of sounds thanks to pcm technology, the sounds are samples from real percussion, but… all of the rhythms are so old fashioned and useless nowadays

@@audiowanderer Yes, better off just using it for sounds.

It sounds beautiful and the digital synthesizer parameters available to modify via sliders on the front is probably the best thing that occurred to a PSS keyboard, no doubt
