That entire album (Superunknown) is a great contribution to the world. I still love that guitar groove on “4th of July” and the drums on “like suicide”. Alice In Chains and Soundgarden are the only 90’s Seattle bands that I could really get into.

I remember when this came out. I was, at the time, exclusively into heavier/thrash metal. I never got into the grunge scene very much because it was generally too pop-ish for my tastes at the time (when compared to the likes of Slayer, Possessed, Megadeth, and similar bands) There were a few standouts, however, that I did actually enjoy. This song is one of those standouts. I remember being on the fence about it at first though it received a lot of airplay on MTv at the time so I grew to like the song over time. Same with several Nirvana songs as well as Alice In Chains "I Stay Away." I know for a fact now, however, that had I been more openminded at the time regarding music I would have greatly enjoyed many of these bands and the music they created. As for me now, however, I am journeying down a different path in music exploration. I am headed more toward the more extreme metal of bands like Infant Annihilator and more progressive metal such as Gojira and Jinjer. I may revisit grunge at some point but not in the forseeable future at this point in time. That being said.. I still greatly enjoy this song. Brings goosebumps as many of the tones and harmonies used are very much ASMR to me.

It's long but, worth the read if you want the story behind the song.....here it goes... From an interview: Regarding "Black Hole Sun", Cornell stated, "It's just sort of a surreal dreamscape, a weird, play-with-the-title kind of song." He also said that "lyrically it's probably the closest to me just playing with words for words' sake, of anything I've written. I guess it worked for a lot of people who heard it, but I have no idea how you'd begin to take that one literally." In another interview he elaborated further, stating, "It's funny because hits are usually sort of congruent, sort of an identifiable lyric idea, and that song pretty much had none. The chorus lyric is kind of beautiful and easy to remember. Other than that, I sure didn't have an understanding of it after I wrote it. I was just sucked in by the music and I was painting a picture with the lyrics. There was no real idea to get across." Commenting upon how the song was misinterpreted as being positive, Cornell said, "No one seems to get this, but "Black Hole Sun" is sad. But because the melody is really pretty, everyone thinks it's almost chipper, which is ridiculous." When asked about the line, "Times are gone for honest men," Cornell said , "It's really difficult for a person to create their own life and their own freedom. It's going to become more and more difficult, and it's going to create more and more disillusioned people who become dishonest and angry and are willing to fuck the next guy to get what they want. There's so much stepping on the backs of other people in our profession. We've been so lucky that we've never had to do that. Part of it was because of our own tenacity, and part of it was because we were lucky."

I remember this song came out when I was in middle school. Because I was different than the majority of my classmates (White girl in a dominantly black school) people used to tease me about listening to Metallica, soundgarden, panthers, etc. Remember being surrounded by people just getting off the bus and they wouldn’t let me leave until I sung this for them. Not because I had a good voice but because they wanted to embarrass me and make fun of me.
