His wife Vicky and some of his close friends said he was in a good period in his life. He was off drugs, Soundgarden got back together and were touring, he had two young kids that he loved to spend time with. Vicky said that Chris wouldn't have done that and he wasn't himself that night because of the anti-anxiety medication he was on (Ativan). He told her he took a couple too many and was slurring his speech on the phone. That's why she had someone go check on him in his hotel room but by the time they checked on him, it was too late. He was an artist and he sang about dark things but he had learned how to separate that from his actual life. So to sum it up, I don't think it was dark days that took him in the end. Just one bad night and an irreversible bad decision made in a drug-induced state. She's not wrong that this stuff massively fucks with the brain. They use it during surgeries to "inhibit memory formation". It's known to cause confusion, disorientation, and suicidal thoughts, in addition to causing physical dependence and requiring ever higher doses as the patient develops a tolerance. The doctor who prescribed this shit to help Chris sleep is a fucking criminal. He could have just given him some melatonin.

Soundgarden is one of the pillars of the Seattle sound of the 90’s. Led by the incomparable Chris Cornell’s vocals they helped to define the music scene of that era. Some songs worth checking out are “Outshined” “Rusty Cage” “Jesus Christ Pose” “My Wave” and “Black Hole Sun” among others. If you want a real treat, listen to Chris’ solo tunes like “Seasons” and “Sunshower”. And since you also appreciate Eddie Vedder, they both sing together on “Hunger Strike” which kind of defined the 90’s. Great reaction!

Chris could sing the saddest songs that made you feel better because the lyrics are so relatable to the human experience. In my mind he had to have been in the down mood to perform this the way he did. About his countenance you commented on: The drummer Matt Cameron said in an interview that Chris would go into a trance. Great reaction to an all time favorite of mine. Thank you and thank you Chris for everything. ♥️ Let me add that the man was so extremely photogenic. Handsome & beautiful in the best of ways. Discovered Chris in 2021 while researching trafficked children. When his picture popped up I could have sworn I knew him. But I didn’t. We love and miss him because Chris was real. Good or bad he was genuine.

Soundgarden were the Alpha dog of the Seattle scene. They were so much more evolved than any other band at the time - setting the bar impossibly high. They made everyone better around them. Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam, and Nirvana followed in their footsteps. Check out Outshined, Spoonman, Jesus Christ Pose or Rusty Cage.

Soundgarden was formed in Seattle in 1984 and was one of the earliest bands of the 90's grunge rock era (Nirvana, Alice in Chians... formed few years later) ... Chris Cornell (vocals) started on drums but moved to playing guitar alongside Kim Thayil (lead guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Hiro Yamamoto (bass)... Soundgarden released their first EP 'Screaming life' in 1987 on the indie Seattle label Sub Pop (which released Nirvana's debut album 'Bleach' in 1989) followed by the EP 'Fopp' in 1988. Their debut album 'Ultramega OK' was released in 1988... Soundgarden was signed to A&M Records in 1989 and released 'Louder than love' in 1989 and enjoyed some MTV exposure as bassist Hiro Yamamoto left the band... Ben Shepherd (bass) eventually replaced him by 1990. Commercial success came w/ their 1991 album 'Badmotorfinger'... as radio and MTV played their singles - 'Jesus Christ pose'... 'Rusty cage' ... 'Outshined'... The album sold gold (half million copies in the USA) and eventually platinum. Chris Cornell also released the album Temple of the Dog, which was a record he wrote to pay tribute to his late friend Andrew Wood (lead singer of Mother Love Bone) who died in 1990 from a OD... Temple of the Dog also featured members of Pearl Jam in 1991 and the single 'Hunger strike' became a hit in '92 as the album sold platinum as well (1 million copies) After the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in 1994... and Pearl Jam... Alice in Chains... retreating from public view, the spotlight fell on Soundgarden to fill the void in the Seattle rock scene. The album 'Superunknown' became a massive hit on MTV and radio in '94 w/ the singles - 'Black hole Sun'... 'Spoonman' ... 'The day I tried to live'... 'Fell on black days' ... 'My wave'... 🤘🤘It sold 6x platinum in the US and won Soundgarden Grammy Awards... In 1996, Soundgarden released the album 'Down on the upside'... but despite major MTV and radio airplay w/ the singles - 'Pretty noose' ... 'Burden in my hand' ... 'Blow up the outside world'... the album sold platinum only... On tour, Chris Cornell seemed to struggle playing live and the internal situation seemed to deteriorate by 1997... Soundgarden announced that they were breaking up that year. Chris Cornell released his first solo album 'Euphoria morning' in 1999... then, he joined the band Audioslave w/ former members of Rage Against the Machine in 2002 ... and released 3 albums w/ them. Soundgarden eventually reunited in 2011 and began working on new music & playing shows... Their new song 'Live to rise' was on the 'Marvel's Avengers' movie soundtrack... Their new album 'King Animal' was finally released in 2012. By 2017, Soundgarden were working on songs for a new album, but things were not well w/ Chris Cornell and he seemed to be struggling once again w/ live performances... After a Soundgarden show in Detroit in 2017, Chris Cornell tragically took his own life... Soundgarden has yet to announce anything since then.

A big one for that tribute was Taylor Momson (The PrettyReckless). You should check out their song Only Love Can Save Me Now featuring Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden. The song is about the deep depression Taylor was in after Chris passed and then a few months later her friend and producer Kato passed in a motorcycle accident. It's their best song imo and is very fitting that they have Kim and Matt on it. The video is very symbolic with the lyrics as well.

Sadly I never seen SG live but i did see Chris live solo in 2011 and could have in 2017 again BUT i decided to go to another concert festival instead because i thought id be able to see him at a later time. And the band The Pretty Reckless was opening for them and ad been touring with them for awhile so Chris and Taylor Momsen the lead singer (also Cindy Loo Who), had got kinda close like brother sister so it really messed her up when he committed suicide but Kim Thyal (guitarist) and Matt Cameron(drummer) really helped her out of her funk. and both appear on their album Death By Rock And Roll Chris Cornell made magik no matter what he did, Soundgarden, Audioslave, colabs like Alice Cooper or Slash but his Solo acoustic stuff all just soo good.

“Black Hole Sun” is widely considered Chris’ signature song, but it’s more of a showcase for his songwriting than his voice. Here you start to get a glimpse of the power and range that he had vocally. His lyrics were also a cut above the standard rock fare. As a singer he still has few peers at all. But too many of our dark stars have fallen, and I just want them to be at peace at last.

Okay, so now that you’ve heard Soundgarden, you can cast your vote in the great debate of the 90’s. Who is the best singer? Eddie Vedder or Chris Cornell? It was a huge debate at my college. I was on Chris Cornell’s side, but I think I’ve changed my mind since then. Also, now you should definitely listen to Temple of the Dog, which is the big team up with both Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell. Their most popular song is called Hunger Strike. Simple? I guess you could say that, but the understated power of this progression/groove in 6/4 time is not something you often hear in rock music. I definitely think you should check out the 90s band Temple of the Dog. Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) collaborated their vocals together to create an incredible sound with the songs "Hunger Strike" and "Say Hello 2 Heaven" specifically. You definitely should check them out! With regard to Soundgarden, I'd say check out "Rusty Cage" and "Spoonman."
@tinagilbert89028 ай бұрын
Agree, the Temple of The Dog tribute album (for Andrew Wood) and especially the song "Hunger Strike" is a must on a Chris Cornell/Soundgarden Journey.❤ However, just to keep things clear for Nikki, the song "Hunger Strike" was NOT a collaboration of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Out of the tragedy of Andrew's death, Chris wrote the album and was recording it with Andy's surviving bandmates of Mother Love Bone (Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard) ,who were also auditioning for a new lead singer. They felt Andy would want them to continue. Anyway, a very young and unexperienced Eddie Vedder was sitting outside the recording booth waiting for his "audition with Stone and Jeff as they were trying to record "Hunger Strike". Chris was frustrated with his vocals in the chorus. He kept saying "I can't sing it the way I hear it in my head" (the low parts). The young and then unknown Eddie understood and walked into the booth and started singing the lows parts. Chris loved it. He has recounted it many times through the years in interviews. In a nutshell Chris has stated that he was struggling with the lower parts and then this guy, quietly, but with some balls came in, walked up to a mic and started singing the low parts"... the rest is history... the band Pearl Jam was born.
