i live in Chicago and was trying to rally and go to the detroit show, to no avail. I woke to a text from a friend at 5:30 informing me of the devestating news. Anyone that knows me, can attest to my love for this band, starting a lil late...1990. I know how this sounds, but it took me almost 2 years to shake off Chris' tragedy. I'm not what one may call an obsessive, over reactin' drama queen. I just shared a lot of the same difficulties and I'm not much younger than Chris. When I was able to focus on the severity and relate....well I suppose it woke a part of me. I guess I can be grateful in a way. Still...It's difficult and hard for me at times...Anyway..this band made me a far better musician and I'm still learning. Much Love. Chris Cashin

I remember being 18 years old and moving to Port Orchard, Washington. There was a record store/guitar shop down the road. They had this cassette for sale there. I bought it. I thought, what hell is this. I loved it but at in the same breath, I kinda of hated it. Not the mix, it sucked but the band. I was jealous because this to me was the music I had imagine making with a band. I remember sitting in my room, my white Les Paul Custom Lite and Marshall amp just trying to learn this album. Moving there was the best time of my life. I was able to see and meet Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. The big 3 from that time. I was able to meet some other great bands at that time but those three like most of us at that age, was the shit! To me though, it was Soundgarden that shaped me as a musician. Meeting Chris many years later again when he was a solo artist was fantastic. He actually remembered me and allowed us to stay on the side stage while the rest of the people were asked to leave. I still still remember him pointing at their security and saying, not him. Meeting him again a couple years later was just as cool. Was backstage again doing my PR work and I saw him about 10 feet away. It was a quick glance but he pointed and asked, you are staying for the show? I said, of course. He said, make sure you do and gave me a smile. Lol, as if I a was just there to visit but not watch the show. Lol. We talked a little after the remarkable show. I will say that many may disagree but Chris seemed happy and he seemed on top of his game with his solo band. They always nailed a great show. It was the best of Cornell from all his bands and solo work. It awesome. I am still devastated that he is no longer with us. It doesn't seem right at all. Yes, we have the music but we don't have him on earth anymore. He was always so kind and gracious. He is missed. He was and will always be a legend. RIP Chris and thank you.
@haleymay11196 жыл бұрын
That's a great story and glad you had the opportunity to meet him. I say this with humor, but Chris sensed your aura and new how much you were inspired by his music. Thats why he let you stay by the stage and "told everybody else take a hike"! (Not literally, but figuratively). He knew you would take the experience of meeting him and turn your music into something special. That's why he let you hang around. I'm happy for you! 💗💗

And to think that with all of that honor it still wasn't enough to give him the will to press on. That is a real indictment of the false values of our age. Sickness. Kurt Cobain is another example of this lesson. So many of my music heroes have lived this out in real time for me not to notice it as a truth.

That the original release of Beyond the Wheel sounds better than the reissue (unlike every other song on the album) and the Early Version sounds better than both other versions is proof of just how fuckin' raw that song is. The messier the better.

This album is cool to listen to because you definitely notice a hard rock influence, but can hear the outlines of what would eventually become the grunge sound.

So weird decibel put this album in their hall of fame the month before he died. Well deserved, great underappreciated album.

1. Flower All of seventeen Eyes a purple green Treated like a Queen, she was On borrowed self esteem She would do a dance A painful masquerade Spinning you into her web Along her vain parade In her uniform Studded brass and steel Kissing napkin, lipstick stains And smearing sincerity Along her vain parade Along her veins Time crept up on her She's an early grey Her reflection looks concerned As flowers hit her grave 2. All your lies All your fears are lies All your fears are lies All your fears are lies All your fears are lies See through your triples, falling, limping, crawling Biting, fighting, back from dying Endless ending, comprehending Nothing of the sin she's sinning Loosely buying your cheating, your lying Will make it mine, with no more crying Cracked like a cat with my head in a sack And I feel like I'm tied to a railroad track All your fears are lies All your fears are lies All your fears are lies All your fears are lies All your fears are lies See through your triples, falling, limping, crawling Biting, fighting, back from dying Endless ending, comprehending Nothing of the sin she's sinning Loosely buying your cheating, your lying Will make it mine never crying Cracked like a cat with my head in a sack And I feel like I'm tied to a railroad track All your fears are lies 3. 665 It's creeping In so slow Trapping it, nobody's home It's creeping in So slow Trapping it, nobody's home Santa, I love you baby My Christmas king Santa, you're my king I love you, Santa baby Got what I need 4. Beyond the Wheel Far beyond the road Between your house and home There is a churning storm Of hailing burning bones Tiny baby cries Little, tiny pawn In the profit gain Tiny baby grows Mother, who's your man Is he doing what he can To make a proper home, home By overturning other stones, stones Father, mighty man Loves his little boys, boys Shows them how to kill To save his precious stones, stones Far beyond the wheel Spin your life around By driving flesh and blood Deep into the ground, ground Far beyond the wheel Steers your life around By driving flesh and blood, blood Deep into the ground, ground 5. 667 Kill them all Steal their gold Feed my boy's killer Feed the young, prepare it save you Feed the boy, hates to kill Feed the young Feed the young Cool 6. Mood for Trouble My mood was in full swing My mood was in full swing I wanted to be free Free to watch the hail I did not want to hear The perfect thing to say Dying to squeeze out The ugly truth for everyone to hear Admit You believed Your comfort pool of lies And now If can you could say Everything be alright I did not wanna fight I did not wanna kill I wanted to be real I wanted to believe That I was not the only one alive 7. Circle of Power The day will finally come in and opened the door Cause we have conquered a kingdom And a place of rage Covered with assholes Well here we live To see their fear and their trembling words Of a volunteer A pretty, pretty blank name on the list An "x" for every accomplished deed. Ol' big bad ass circle of power's comin' to getcha! Not necessarily dumb, but just uh... beautiful... beautiful... Well it's the circle of power And it's all It's all the same Ah the circle, spinning the circle of power And it's under different names Oh the circle of power It's all the same The circle of power 8. He Didn't He did nothing perfectly He did nothing quite well He did nothing perfectly, much better then anyone I've ever seen Uh He did nothing all the time He did nothing constantly He did nothing everyday, more often than anyone I've ever seen Uh He failed, and he failed miserably He failed, and he failed quite bad He failed, and he failed miserably What's better he never even had to try 9. Smokestack Lightning Smokestack lightning Shine a light home Smokestack lightning Shining like gold Treats me like a clown Wheels go driving slow Trucks me out of town Wheels go driving slow Tell me baby So when you coming home Tell me baby When you coming home Wheels go driving slow Wheels go driving slow Wheels go driving slow 10. Nazi Driver I don't care if it takes some time I'm gonna make it right I'm gonna make it right Turn the head three hundred and sixty degrees Bite the hand that feeds I don't care if it tasted like Poisson Rip the legs from the thighs Feed the prison, open the eyes I don't care if it tastes like poison I'm gonna feed the prison, feed the prison Color in the lakes of red Pile of bones for my bed I'm gonna take some time, I'm gonna take some time [mystery scream] Feed the prison Not a tear will be shed The only color is red, red I don't care if it takes some time I'm gonna make it right, I'm gonna make it right Turn the head three hundred and sixty degrees Bite the hand that feeds I don't care if it tastes like poison Feed the prison and open the eyes Not a tear will be shed The only color is red I don't care if it tastes like poison I'm gonna feed the prison I'm gonna feed the prison I'm gonna feed it 11. Head Injury Head injury, head injury, head injury You got a kiss for me, it hits me hard You got a fist for me, you love so hard My hands on my head, your words are like arrows My hands on my head, there's permanent damage Head injury, head injury yeah, head injury You got a kiss for me, it's sweet and frail You got a fist for me, sure to impale My hand on my head, your words are like arrows My hand on my head, my mind growing narrow Head injury, head injury, head injury You got a kiss for me, it's sweet and frail You got a fist for me, sure to impale My hand on my head, your words are like arrows My hand on my head, my mind growing narrow You got a kiss for me, it hits me hard You got a fist for me, you love me so hard My hands on my head, your words are like arrows My hands on my head, my mind growing narrow Head, head, head, head, head injury 12. Incessant Mace So he's afraid he'll suffer his father's fate Two sets of silverware, cups and plates Two bloody hands and bleeding hearts yeah But don't feel it's not too late to start Only the photographs on your wall Are chained and down your hall Reminding you of all the days When you collected hell to pay Well hell to pay I said it's not too late Not it's not too late, yeah Incessant mace Incessant mace Oh God I can see it, you know it's incessant mace Uh yeah yeah Magazine stacks and broken backs Are what you get for piling stacks Beneath your treasure chest? You wonder why you're under stress You're under stress I said, no it's not too late, no, not too late Yeah it's not too late Incessant mace Incessant mace oh yeah Incessant mace Incessant mace yeah Oh God I can see it, you know it's incessant, mace, mace 13. Thanks, but most of those lyrics are way off; I don't care if they've been floating around online for 25 years. I wish Kim would release Chris' isolated vocals for this album so we could finally hear what he's actually saying in these songs.
