I used to have a PC with 2 floppies and no hard disk and, even before, a previous PC with just one floppy and of course no hard disk, so you first had to load the OS in memory from a disk, eject the disk, insert another disk with a program, load it in memory too and eventually start your task (mid 80s).

They're just very rare and expensive, it was during the transition between 3.5" and 5.25" floppies, to encourage users to keep their diskettes. I've had some of them but they're very expensive nowadays. I've managed to get my hands on a 2.88 Mb 3.5" drive but i can't seem to find its diskettes, they're even more rare than the drive itself.

I remember floppy disks. Was it the head making the noise or the mechanism? Why was it so loud. I remember them being used till I was 15 or so

There is a stepper motor that moves the heads back and forth, there is a step signal on the interface that moves the head one track at a time, to move multiple tracks the signal has to pulse several times usually in a quick succession resulting in the buzzing, the motor is what is making the noise
