My ears can’t hear different pronunciations (fell-fail, sail-sell) in the first part of this video. And when I am watching part of the pronunciation exercise, I can’t hear/ɪ/ in /eɪ/ but some words (fail, hail, jail, sail). Moreover, I think pairs of words (fail-fell; hail-hell; jail-gel; sail-sell) don't different at all or have very tiny distinguished. If I am wrong to please highlight to me how can I fix this problem with my hearing? Maybe the last letter 'L' changes pronunciation vowels /eɪ/. Your canal is the best on KZbin for American pronunciation without any unnecessary information.
@Hipetyhop123 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm not an expert on language, or whatever. But, I have a general (standard) American accent and I pronounce the words you mentioned the same way as each other: 1. fail / fell 2. hail / hell 3. gell / jail 4. sail / sell So don't worry.

I strongly like this video, i am learning ei sound with my Online Philipino teacher in someday but I still can not apply this in every word like fail, but your voice makes me easier recognize it and I can repeat it many time as I want . It really really useful. Thank you so much. Your team is great team.

My native language is Brazilian Portuguese. We have four vowel sounds that are very similar to the English ones. We have /i/, /ɛ/, /u/ and /ɔ/. We also have three other vowel sounds which are /e/ , /o/ and /a/ and some english teachers explained to me that these three vowels "exist" in American English, however they are not pronounced as monophthongs, single vowels or pure vowels ( I guess these three technical terms mean the same thing, I'm not sure). So they told me that /e/, /o/ and /a/ are vowels that are pronounced as part of the group of the vowels called diphthongs. /e/ is the first sound pronounced in the diphthong /eɪ/, as in Able, cAke, and grEY. /o/ is the first sound pronounced in the diphthong /oʊ/ as in the words Ocean, bOAt and shOW. And last but not least /a/ is the first sound pronounced in two diphthongs in American English: /aɪ/ as in hi and /aʊ/ as in how. Well, that kind of makes sense, since the symbols used to represent the first part of these diphthongs in IPA transcriptions are the same symbols used to represent the three vowels sounds that exist in my language /e/, /o/ and /a/. Do you agree to this statement? Are these three really the vowel sounds pronounced in the first part of these diphthongs? PS: the American English /ɑ/ vowel and the Portuguese /a/ vowel sound very similar to me. By the way, I've already watched videos here on KZbin where American English teachers said that the /a/ vowel is very similar to the /ɑ/ vowel like in the word fAther. => kzbin.info/www/bejne/amelfYd_h8yDY6c

@Lucas olá, você está com dificuldade para entender os símbolos fonéticos é isso? Eu sei como é. Também fiquei confuso no começo.
@brunopinheiro54562 жыл бұрын
@Lucas é isso mesmo.
@brunopinheiro54562 жыл бұрын
@brunopinheiro54562 жыл бұрын
@Lucas Um professor meu me falou que as vogais , [e] como em mÊs , [o] como em flOr e [a] como em chÁ só existem em inglês como parte de ditongos [eɪ], [oʊ], [aɪ] e [aʊ], e a princípio esses quatro ditongos são bem parecidos com os ditongos que temos em português: [eɪ] > Cake ; lei [oʊ] > nOte ; tesOUra [aɪ] > bike ; cAIxa [aʊ] > now , mingAU

1:31 I hear [fɛl] distinctly. Am I wrong?
@SoundsAmerican7 жыл бұрын
+emsqrer It's definitely /eɪ/, as the narrator pronounces the word "fail". You may be confused as the /eɪ/ in that word is "colored" by the /l/ sound, which affects the pronunciation of a preceding vowel.
@emsqrer7 жыл бұрын
Oh, that "colored" /l/ makes "fail" to sound [fɛəl] for me :)

You are not along, may be the sound /ɪ/ in /feɪl/ is too short, I listened for many times and I still can not get the /ɪ/. Then I checked the two sounds in dictionary, they are quite different, I can hear them clearly.

Hi!. I am a native Spanish speaker and I only get confused with /eɪ/ and /ɛ/ in the words that ending in /eɪ/ + L and /ɛ/ + L as in in the pair words fail - fell. I hear fell in both pronunciations. Have you make a video about it?

+Javier Torres , Javier, my apologies, I misread your initial question and only saw it later that you've actually seen this exact video. We haven't made a specific video for the words ending with the /L/ sound after the /eɪ/ or the /ɛ/ yet, but we do have several pairs of words like that in this one. Please, check the practice exercise from this moment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGqkfKN_pNpmoa8 and further. Again, apologies for the confusion.

Dear Sound American admin, I think for the word fell and fail at 1:37 you have pronounced it fell instead fail ... please correct me if I am wrong ...
@SoundsAmerican5 жыл бұрын
+Elwin Harahap We pronounced exactly the word "fail." The /l/ sound affects the pronunciation of the preceding vowel, that's maybe why you're confused.

The main point of this exercise is to repeat the words after the speaker. Pronunciation is a physical skill, and as with any physical skill it requires lots of practice to develop muscle memory. Don't give up and good luck!
