I agree! It's not even that difficult, it's just that we naturally just skip it and say a regular "t" if we're not used to it. This video made me aware of the glottal stop, and I will practice it!

For me, it's easy to do this sound, but it doesn't seem so natural with a couple of words in the same sentence, like "the cotton curtain is not in the fountain". It's sounds more like I'm having the hiccups!!!

Keep posting such good stuffs because this video is really amazing and its result in a medium-term will be astonishing. A lot of people just tries their best to imitate the native English speakers to sound like them, this is good but without having a good understanding of things like glottal T/ Stopped T / sound change / connected speech and all other similar concepts they'll sound like imitating even after trying their best. Imitate but learn too!

Thank you for clarifying this! Every time I read the IPA transcription of "Newton" in the Cambridge Dictionary, I thought that I was hearing the word wrong, because they describe the sound with the symbol "t" (but I think that there are some natives that pronounce the word with the normal "t" sound). Great video!

I did glottal stops well into my college years, and people had trouble understanding me. I trained myself to pronounce the Ts and I don't need to repeat myself now. It's not exaggerated like in Transatlantic, but words like "Certain", the stop are frontal rather than in my throat, so there is a slight T sound, rather than a stop of sound. I don't think I am going back to glottal T.

Your video really helps me a lot. I hope you can read my comments. I Start learning English when i was grade school but i just become conscious of my pronunciation just last month. I am 22 now. So i try to practice the correct sound however, most of the time, when I am speaking, it is not correct. What would I do? I understand most of your video but it is hard to get rid of my "regional accent" as what they said. My mistakes is mostly on vowel sounds.
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 6 жыл бұрын
+Koon AGnes, Hello there! Sure, we read all comments. It's great that you started working on your accent and are being conscious about your pronunciation. Becoming aware of mistakes in your pronunciation is a significant step towards improving it. Many non-native speakers don't realize that they make mistakes and even need to work on learning to hear them.The next step is practice. The hard truth is that to see the progress you need to practice regularly. You don't have to spend hours, but you'll need discipline. We often compare pronunciation practice to fitness workouts. When you learn to do a new exercise, you need to spend some time to understand what you're doing and then exercise regularly to teach your muscles to perform with the correct technique. Same with your accent, you need to train the muscles of your lips, tongue, and jaw to make certain movements and then you'll be able to do that automatically. So at first, you'll need to concentrate a lot to make sure you pronounce the sounds correctly, but soon you'll realize you're doing that automatically. That's when you'll be able to speak with a better American accent in daily conversations. We usually work with our students like this: first, they work on individual sounds, then they move to practice sounds in words. After that, they practice connected speech, meaning, pronounce words in sentences. It's not as scary as it sounds, what you need is at least 15 minutes of practice a day and being more attentive how you speak English during the rest of the time. You mentioned that vowel sounds are most problematic for you. We have lots of videos on American vowels on our channel. Here's an Interactive Vowel Chart, you can start with it as it links to videos on each sound with practice exercises:kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXbHg3SchLKZpLc& Hope it helps!

Hey sir, i saw some natives making this sound in words like: writing, reading, sounding, etc... can we make it? Is it wrong? Is that the key to speak quickly? Cause there are a lot of word in english with this sound...
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 5 жыл бұрын
Hello there! For us, it’s really difficult if not impossible to make a glottal 'T' in the example word “writing.” We think it’s much easier to simply turn that 'T' into a flap 'T' (/t̬/) or /d/. And that’s why we make a flap 'T' in that position, because it’s easier (we’re simply continuing with the voicing that is on both sides of that /t/ sound). With the other two words, we're really not sure, as there’s not a /t/ sound in them. 😊 Could it be that you mean the flap 'T' and not the glottal 'T'?
@Gubeto
@Gubeto 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds American No! I’m sorry for my late reply, but I’ll say to you where I took it from. From the music: Rubbin off the paint by Lil Nahmir If you hear when he says the word “speedin”, he does not use the d to pronounce, so... I don’t know.

Hello, there! That's an amazing lesson! I've never thought about that sound! I have listened to this video a couple of times and have noticed that you pronounced the word "accountant" like there no "t" at the end like /əˈkaʊnʔn/. But dictionaries show the word like /əˈkaʊntənt/. Could you please explain this?
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 4 жыл бұрын
Hello there! Glad you liked that video! You're asking a great question. The last sound in the word "accountant" is the voiceless stop consonant /t/. It is pronounced, but it's unaspirated (pronounced without a puff of air). This is called a Final Stop rule and we discuss it in detail in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3ezk3-Ziqill7M Moreover, in this very word, the final /t/ follows the /n/, and these two consonants are made in the same place, so it's even harder to "hear" the /t/. You may have thought that it's not pronounced because you expected to hear a puff of air, but there's none. :). Hope it helps!

It's also common to replace final T with a glottal stop in some accents, e.g. /ˈlɪmɪʔ/ for "limit"

Thank you for the great video! I always thought the schwa was elided and a syllabic /n/ was used, but I didn't know there's a glottal stop as well. In American English, does the glottal stop appear in other contexts?

Great question. The glottal 'T' may appear in sentences when a word that ends with the letter 'T' is followed by a word that begins with a consonant. Usually it happens in really fast conversations.

Your channel is a discovery as for me . I find it a little bit difficult in some words like ( eaten ) ( Latin ) ( fountain ) is so difficult , why this ? and easy in ( cotton ) ( button ) , I notice that words starts with ( k ) sound as ( cotton ) is easy much more than others , the cut air in this sound looks like as this letter in Arabic language ( ء )

+Alia Mohammed , glad you found our channel! Welcome! :). The glottal 'T' sound is not easy for many non-native English speakers. Firstly, when learning English, you naturally intend to pronounce the regular /t/ sound when seeing the letter 'T'. So you prepare to put the tip of your tongue at the alveolar ridge and stop the air there. However, the glottal 'T' is pronounced in your throat. So, this part can be confusing. Secondly, the glottal 'T' sound occurs before a weak syllable ending with the /n/ sound. So, right after you make the /ʔ/ in your throat you need to switch to pronouncing the /n/ sound and direct the air into your nose. This part requires some practice too. The ء letter looks awesome! 👍 Let us know if you have any other questions!

@@SoundsAmerican First of all thank you so much for all the efforts you making to helping us, about the difficulty i am wondering is this Glottal T rule, applied whenever we find letter T, and should we just pronounce (a) replacing T, like bu(a)on or we need to pronounce like silent T before (a), sorry for ressembling Glottal T by (a) because i don't have the Glottal T symbol, Thank you so much, much Love

Hello! i have two questions here: 1. How can I differentiate between t in " cotton " and " cutting"? I find the same form in both of them but the pronunciation is different 2 . you mention " accountant " has the glottal, T. what about " accountancy " that has a syllable after / n / ؟ Thanks alot and really Hats off.
@SoundsAmerican
@SoundsAmerican 6 жыл бұрын
+Alia Mohammed The two letters 't' in "cotton" occur before an unstressed syllable that ends with the /n/ sound, so the 'tt' are pronounced as the glottal 'T' sound. The two letters 't' in "cutting" occur before an unstressed syllable that ends with the /ŋ/ sound, so the 'tt' are pronounced as the voiceless stop sound /t/. ( The 'ng' in "cutting" is pronounced as the nasal /ŋ/ sound, please watch this video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6m5omuKbZ2igNk for more information).
