Some drum companies and notable individuals preach the idea of tuning your drums based on the resonant pitch of the shell itself. We've also had more than a handful of inquiries regarding this method. For Ep. 46 we set out to determine whether or not this makes a difference and checked to see how much the resonant pitch of the shell changed with and without hardware intact.
This was a particularly fun experiment because of the process (we love nerding out over this stuff!) and the results that we came up with along the way.
Details:
Drum: Pearl Masters Custom Extra (Maple) 9x12” Tom
Shell Pitch (no hardware): C# +30 cents (141Hz)
Shell Pitch w/Lugs: B -35 cents (121Hz)
Batter Head: Evans G2 Clear
Reso Head: Evans G1 Clear
