It is indeed ASBA in one word; I grew up in french speaking Belgium and have never heard it as A.S.B.A. They made a metal model for the great french drummer Christian Vander in the early seventies before he got himself into Gretsch (and stayed there). I never thought that that name would ever come back until I saw a few sets last year. I always enjoy your videos.

I’ve been subscribed to your channel for, I think, two years now. Last weekend was the first time I had to tune another person’s snare drum to fit the style they were going for in the recording. I did it in like 10 mins but it was the culmination of hours and hours of watching your videos and thinking about tuning and recording as a result of it. I dont get to fuss about drum tuning a lot so last weekend was the first major breakthrough I would say. I no longer needed samples to cover for wonky sounds for that recording. And no matter how much compression or saturation I use the sound stays solid and doesnt fall apart. Big big thanks to you guys for helping out this lonely engr in an island in the middle of nowhere.

What a crazy, cool and beautiful instrument! That drum is a game changer. Thanks for sharing this! As an aside, here's my favorite JR story. I was at PASIC several years ago where JR was presenting. Waiting in the audience for the clinic to start, music was playing and it seemed like the clinic was running late. After a few moments I realized the song was changing every 10 seconds, give or take. All of the song snippets were songs that JR played on . The clinic had indeed already started. This went on for about 13 minutes! He went on to finish presenting a wonderful clinic.

I would love a system like this on a 13x3 piccolo, I love the newer Dennis Chambers snare that has 12 on top and 8 on bottom, but it feels like a very one-niche instrument and the ability to have that setup as well as a more standard setup would be fantastic to me.

Given that the top and bottom tensioners are both connected to the same rail, how much do they influence each other? When you change tension on one head, how much does it affect the other head?
@SoundsLikeADrum2 жыл бұрын
We couldn’t get them to have any noticeable impact on each other in terms of tension applied. That said, changing one head will always influence how the opposing head behaves simply because of the physics of a two-headed drum. Yet another fun feature of this design is how you can further adjust that through the positioning of the lugs, allowing for asymmetric placement.

This is honestly the first out of the ordinary design that y’all have shown that seems genuinely useful and really interesting. My only question is, are there ever issues with the rim or head warping with the uneven tension? I play a kentevillw snare head and would worry about the hide
@camerondean68042 жыл бұрын
I can't answer for him, but in my opinion you'd want to be careful when not positioning lugs evenly to not overtension, esp. overtensioning of unevenly placed lugs for a long period of time. Esp. on a drum this expensive. Going to try to get one of these one day.... personally, I would only offset positioning/tensioning within bounds and for short periods of time. My little two cents. Oh, I mainly want the drum be be able to run a low number of lugs on top and bottom ... massive fan of 8- and especially 6-lug snare drums, and experiment with lug count (esp. high count batter and low count resonance), but 95% of the time evenly spaced. That three-ply lay up with re-rings screams Rogers Deluxe Student model (old Neil Peart #1).... I have three of them (all shallow)...hence, why I'd love to have one of these deep babies.

And here I thought the dialtune was pretty nutty when it comes to versatility, queue this guy! It'd be even cooler if the legs had their length/tightness controlled by a screw, but you could unlock them on the go with like a locking joint mechanism or something, so that you could on the fly remove and add lugs anywhere you want

@@SoundsLikeADrum ASBA original drums and hardware went out of business around 1982; they boasted okoumé drums, steel , copper, acrylic and stainless steel drums, two headed or single headed shells (Linda) , implemented mostly with cast hoops and lugs.. they produced the famous Caroline kick pedal and the fantastic Veronique Hi Hat pedal. everything was crafted in France. 30 years passed by, until an enthousiast Asba fan decided to bring it all back to life, with the opportunities the new world market offered. though I am not a great believer in this technological wizardry of a Snare drum,, I tip my hat to this invention. @@jiboo6850 Maybe we just place greater value in time spent getting the right sound for the context than most. We disagree regarding the premise of the original comment here so it's not about admitting anything. Both of us have tech'd for sessions, tuned for our own performances live and in the studio and prepared sounds for hundreds of these videos and we've never spent a staggering amount of time getting the sounds because we've got the experience and the knowledge to keep it from becoming prohibitively debilitating. It's easy to imagine something being difficult or even nightmarish when you've yet to experience it first-hand- that's why we take the time to produce these videos and provide our experience, especially with more innovative designs like this system.

i'm sorry but when you say "gigs snare" i say nope. "studio snare" yes but not gigs. live you don't have time to mess with things like that. that's why drummers use multiple snares if they need to in live situations. just a quick swap and it's ready to go. it's a beautiful and effective piece but good for studio only. unless you wanna keep one tune for a concert.
@jiboo68502 жыл бұрын
@@BennoSattler true. depends of studio time and money. good studios have schedule to respect and deal with.
@SoundsLikeADrum2 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, the reference to gigging wasn't about making adjustments mid-gig but rather that you can prepare the snare drum for just about any gig based on the needs while achieving the ideal sound for the context without compromise. When you might normally choose a different drum for a different gig, this drum covers the needs.

@@SoundsLikeADrum like any other drums LOL. your argument is not good.
@SoundsLikeADrum2 жыл бұрын
Nope, unlike any other drum for all of the reasons outlined in this video. Different lug counts and positioning vastly change the character of an instrument. That combined with the choices in edges, shell composition/dines ins, and every other customizable aspect of a snare drum make this an unparalleled instrument that could easily replace multiple drums in a working professional’s arsenal. No worries if this doesn’t resonate with you (not everyone considers their choice of gear for a gig with this degree of intentionality) but this is exactly what we thought as we started considering which drums we’ll be unloading in favor of this single snare drum. Thanks for watching!

@SoundsLikeADrum2 жыл бұрын
@Benno Sattler Sorry you feel that way about the head usage though we explained this in the video- we demonstrate the drum using the equipment that it ships with and it's as simple as that. If we start swapping heads then why not do wires too? Maybe different hoops for certain drums? How about trying out a different snare strainer? We choose to draw the line quite simply at using the equipment provided whenever possible.
