McIntosh is one of the most musical amps you can buy. Its not perfect and it’s expensive but it has one of the most enjoyable sound signatures. Beautiful song!

Had the D3’s and they beam the midrange like crazy…sold them fast!! Previous designs were more balanced. I think the ownership change has perhaps affected the overall sound? Really liked B&W until last couple of designs 😮

If could be so humble to ask for your advice? I grew up on the 12" Tannoy's with Quad Amps and Akai Reel to Reel, it used to shake the windows and walls, but wow did it sound good, I still remember it as a kid listening to music for hours on end. Then Dad sold those speakers and bought the 15" Tannoys and I'm sure people could hear our music in another suburb as the whole family liked it loud. As an adult I tried to get a similar system as I missed Dad's stereo and speakers so much, I got a pair of Tannoy D700's they have the twin 8" speakers matched with the QUAD 707 pre-amp and Quad 777 Amp with a NAD DAC. It does sound good and you can hear a lot of detail, but it just does not fill the room with rich warm tones like Dad's 12" and 15" Tannoy's and certainly doesn't shake the windows, I even tried adding sub woofers which helps but is still not the same. I am looking at selling my D700 speakers and want to buy either the Arden 15", Eaton 12", SGM 15" or the SGM 12", what would you recommend having heard many of the Tannoy models over your life? I do remember Dad always saying he preferred the 12" Tannoy's over the 15" as he thought the base was cleaner on the 12". I guess it comes down to the Eaton or the SGM 12" models but it would be great to get your thoughts on this choice, what are the major differences in listening?

I have to agree there might better audio options for equal price tag , or even less, but when you look at it as a hole: the looks, support, build quality, culture, audio quality, pride or ownership, resale value, etc you will realize they are one of the best, top tier. Very hard to beat. If you cherry pick a specific category McIntosh might not be the best, look at the hole package and you’ll see the value.

In my opinion these sound much better than the Yamaha NS 5000 speakers that were featured here recently. Yes they cost somewhat more than the Yamaha's but their sound justifies it.

DA FAMOS AINTERVISTA: Se tutti noi tecnici audio professionali facciamo i nostri ascolti su sistemi attivi è per avere l'esatta immagine di quello che stiamo mettendo in onda o su cd o su hard disk. L' audiofilo medio, quello che spende una enormità cercando di "colorare" , "ammorbidire", "ambientare" i suoni dei propri impianti, si comporta come quel tipo che entra in una pinacoteca a godersi i quadri esposti indossando un paio di occhiali con le lenti colorate ... Usate le orecchie, non il portafogli.

Spero che sia un caso isolato che un tecnico audio professionale faccia dichiarazioni di tale ignoranza e superficialità. La discriminante della fedeltà di riproduzione non la dá certamente il fatto che il sistema sia attivo piuttosto che passivo. Ci sono mille altre variabili che determinano la qualità complessiva della riproduzione. L’esempio degli occhiali colorati perchè non lo vai a fare ad un cantante che preferisce un microfono valvolare piuttosto che uno a nastro?

Все можно сделать во много раз дешевле , и это будет звучать на любых самых дешёвых проводах , с любым стерео усилителем , с любыми колонками ( с правильной полярностью , с lc фильтром ), и любое сжатое мп3 будет звучать во много раз лучше чем записи высокого качества в кривых связках . Это будет подобие коррекции выходного сигнала на выходе усилителя как у цифрового фазолинейного фильтра для динамиков без фильтров , только все гораздо проще и лучше.

Earlier this year I sat in front of a McIntosh setup that was on display at the auto show for the Jeep Pioneer. The environment was loud and horrible, but when the kind women asked what song I would like to hear, I said... The Weekend. I wanted to hear something that would drown out the noise. I leaned back in the comfy chair, 3 foot glass wall behind me. Next thing I know I feel like he's on stage in front of me. I was blown away!! It was unreal. Even the people walking around the area stopped and looked at me and the system, hahaha!

This is the type of music and vocals where they shine. But I've heard the 800 D4 on an audio show and the dryness and sterility in the midrange was very uncomfortable and barely listenable.
