As an asian kid who grew up in the 90s, all the other asian kids in the neighborhood hummed this song while we were pretending to fight, Wong Fei Hong was a childhood hero to a lot of asian kids where I'm from (I am from America).

To all western audience: the title of the song translate in english is like "True Man learn to self strengthen yourself" This song was actually to encourage China to self strengthen themselves out from the corrupted, weakening Qing dynasty. This is a song about self strengthen, self motiving, self encouraging...do not always rely on outside help. The true spirit of Wong Fei Hung is not his martial arts but his self strengthening spirit. Self strengthen is always be acceptive to new things, new cultures. Thats always shown in the movie.

Master Wong Fei Hung the great martial artist of China and contemporary of Sun yet sen the great nationalist leader of his time. The song used as opening song of Once upon a time in China starred by Jet Li. It is my favourite song. It inspires all kung fu fighters to a great degree.

For anyone interested, here's the English translation I found from this website: tben.wordpress.com/2009/02/16/lyrics-of-%E7%94%B7%E5%84%BF%E5%BD%93%E8%87%AA%E5%BC%BA-a-man-should-strive-to-become-stronger/ (Stanza 1) Vigorous when facing the beatings of ten thousands heavy waves Ardent just like the rays of the red sun Having courage like forge iron and bones as hard as refined steel Having lofty aspirations and excellent foresight I worked extremely hard, aspiring to be a strong and courageous man (AKA Hero) In order to become a hero, One should strive to become stronger everyday An ardent man shines brighter than the sun (Stanza 2) Allowing the sky and sea to amass energy for me To split heaven and part the earth (To create a new world) , to fight for my aspirations Watching the stature and grandure of jade coloured waves at the same time watching the vastness jade coloured sky, let our noble spirit soar I am a man and I must strive to strengthen myself. Walking in firm steps and standing upright let us all aspire to be a pillar of the society, and to be a hero Using our hundredfold warmth, to bring forth a thousandfold of brilliance Be a hero Being ardent and with strong courage Shine brighter than the sun

As an asian kid who grew up in the 2000s, all the other asian kids in the neighborhood hummed this song while we were pretending to fight, Wong Fei Hong was a childhood hero to a lot of asian kids where I'm from (I am from Bangladesh ).

There are like 6 or 7 films. Vincent Zhao took over the role after the third installement then Jet Li returned for Once Upon a Time in China and America which was directed by Sammo Hung. It's basically the same film as Jackie Chan's Shanghai Noon.
