His backstory: He was a spy and member of the council but believed their leader, Sentinel, was corrupt and became a gladiator and lived among the lower caste. He fought Megatron and though he lost, he did well and nearly bested him, earning them mutual trust. Soundwave then became chief among his followers and proceeded to become a surveillance chief due to his spying abilities. He learned of the Dark Energon on trypticon station and that's why Megatron found it, and used it, accidentally poisoning Cybertron and killing it. He was then a warden for a prison where Optimus was taken to and killed Sentinel when they came to rescue him. When Megatron was later killed by Metroplex and Starscream took over, Soundwave rebuilt him into a new body and used dark energon to resurrect him. So yeah, he is well known. The only mystery is his unordinary anatomy and having his processor function like a harddrive in storing and downloading information.
