I am not a Muslim, but I find Qur'anic recitation of this sort (sung) to be quite relaxing and profoundly beautiful. I find myself listening to it more and more. I'm a composer and musician, and I'm interested in composing a recitation song of my own, but I have some questions. I've heard of a concept called Tajwid (تجويد) which refers to rules for pronunciation of the Qur'an. Does Tajwid also govern how the Qur'an must be sung? (pitch, rhythm, etc) And, for the musically-inclined Muslim reader: I've noticed that all the sung Qur'anic recitations I've ever heard use a pentatonic scale. I know that the pentatonic scale is very common in Middle Eastern and East Asian music, but I wonder if anyone could point me towards a recitation which uses Western scales (major, minor, diatonic, etc.) Related, but separately, would my writing a Qur'anic recitation piece (as a non-Muslim) with a more Western-sounding melody be sacrilegious or offensive in any way? Is there anything else I should know? Thank you, and peace on Earth. I believe that all human beings are brothers and sisters, no matter our heritage or beliefs.

Nathan Moore Hi, I'm glad you like the way Quran is recited. To answer your questions; 1)Yes, tajweed does govern the recitation of the Quran, whether it is 'sung' or not. 2) As for your question regarding the diatomic scale, I might have an idea what you're referring to. But in order to clarify please see this video; */watch?v=2zRNUGgRzac* Would you consider that as using Western scales? 3) If you were to add music in your Quran recitation, then I'm afraid it would be sacrilegious & offending as Islam prohibits the listening and playing of musical instruments. Otherwise, feel free to recite/sing as you please. Try and get the pronunciation of the words right, because it can be a tad bit difficult for non-Arab speakers like myself. With practice though anything is achievable. You must understand, however the reason for the usage of the so-called Middle Eastern scale in Quran recitation is due to the meaning behind the verses. The emotion behind the verse guides the recitation. Islam is in agreement with you as Muslims believe also that all humans share a lineage and thus are indeed, brothers and sisters. Thanks for asking and hope all goes well.

Your heart knows this is the truth. Bro, i consider you a muslim. Many people today just call themselves "muslims", only because they are ancestors were muslims, or because they have a muslim name, but havent really thought too much about it...

"Related, but separately, would my writing a Qur'anic recitation piece (as a non-Muslim) with a more Western-sounding melody be sacrilegious or offensive in any way?" You should not do this. Yes, it would be sacrilegious. Quran is recited. You dont write "songs" with it... There are traditional "modes" ( maqams in arabic) in wich it is recited. You dont just recite it in whatever crazy way you want.

Those red and white kind of hats we have in America but those textil fabrics are commonly used for cleaning the kitchens at home and washing them, we use them wet for cleaning dust and dirt. Really. I didn't realize they were religious outfit. Plus our tradition is to keep our faces shaved for dealing with hot weather.
