Went for a Braai (bbq) at a house in Soweto,
then to get foods in HILLBROW!
The most dangerous area of Johannesburg!
South African Braai (bbq), Boerewors, Pap, Chakalaka, Cows Head, Cows Liver & Heart, Mogodu & Pap, Oxtail & Mash. Castle Beer.
Braai is South Africa’s Barbecue, which is usually a spiral shaped sausage called Boerewors , served with Pap made of maize flour and a very tasty sauce called Chakalaka.
Pap is similar to Kenya’s Ugali and has a number of different names throughout East Africa.
Eating Cows Head , Cows Liver and Heart is a must when visiting South Africa!
Only the Men drinks the broth the cows head is cooked in!
Mogodu (tripe) , served with pap.
HILLBROW in Guateng Johannesburg is known for its high population density, unemployment, extreme poverty, drugs, prostitution,robberies, high murder rate, crime & rubbish everywhere.
Until the 1970’s it was an apartheid designated “white only” area with a large Jewish community. Now 98.3% are black, of various nationalities.
By the -80’s it had become a “grey area” where people of different ethnics lived together, and as the population grew, so did crime levels, unemployment and prostitution. The middle class residents relocated and by the -90’s it had become a bad slum area.
It has become a very dangerous area with police not wanting to interfere because of the dangers. Gangs hijacked high rise buildings and landlords couldn’t do anything to evict them. Banks are shutting.
Even today, it is seen as Johannesburgs most dangerous area, and not safe to hang around specially at night.
Our host was caught in crossfire there the previous year and got her car windscreen blown away in a gang shooting! Being at the wrong place at the wrong time!
We went to Hillbrow early during the day
to get Cows head, liver & heart and some other foods. Our driver kindly took us around the area, and we then drove through an area called BEZUIDENHOUT VALLEY to a pub in SOUTH KENSINGTON called “Craft & Cut”.

I lived in bezuidenhout valley. We called it Bez valley for short. Kensington is on the opposite side of the valley. Lots changed since then

Well done on trying the traditional South African food, Bip! Never tried cow's head myself but I am well versed in pap and boerewors!

Cheers Willie , honoured to get feedback from such a SA expert! Local foods is one of the most important things to me when travelling, cows head was Great, but I was expecting a few more exotic things to eat there loool , but……. maybe next time!! 🤣
