South Africa Steam 2019 - Part 2 of 2: The Red Devil

A video report of a steam train tour made in South Africa in June 2019. Part 2 is showing in particular the legendary locomotive known as the Red Devil, on the Mossel Bay line. Trains hauled by 19D et 19B locomotives are also shown along the same (scenic) line.

SAR had brilliant steam locos and the Red Devil, the best of the best. Apparently 24s ... much smaller locos, could haul 800 tons at 60 to 70 kph... That is one hell of an accomplishment. Thanks for great shots of some brutal grades

Indeed. South African steam locomotives were no joke and unfortunately are usually ignored in railfan circles. I’ve heard a story about a 15F pulling 4000 tons without making a fuss.

I love your videos Sir. You capture it all. Being an ex-pat living here in the US, just seeing SA steam locos again, triggers many memories. Firing to my dad on the Natal South Coast, on 14r’s 16 class GF’s and GCA Garrett’s, was a far cry from the Red Devil and the 25 Class. I’m 81 now. And remember it like it was yesterday. Many treasured memories. Thank you for preserving these wonderful machines on video and film and for allowing future generations to get an idea of what is was like to travel on a train pulled by a steam locomotive! Your Red Devil footage is truly awesome. I left SA in 1962 and did not get to meet her and her many sister’s!

Indeed. Interestingly, the dual Lempor exhaust makes a noise quite different from the other locomotives shown on this video. Much more in the high frequencies. A bit challenging as the clicks of my neighbors cameras are producing sounds in the same frquency range.

Thank you for your nice comment. I pay some attention to the sound track, which is natively stereo. The sound track is also converted to be surround compatible. Unfortunately, I cannot record natively in surround as this would require the help of an assistant and a lot of equipment.

@@KochersbergTV I have certainly been astounded by the sounds of the locomotives even from a long distance away. And I rarely hear any wind noise. I use RODE Videomic for my videos but even the deadcats do not take away all the wind noise. Which mic do you use?

I am using a MKE 440 Sennheiser stereo microphone, with a dead cat, of course. It proved to be surprisingly immune to wind noises in Argentine Patagonia where the wind is blowing mad all the time. You can hear it on my video, there is no way out, but it remains under control. Now, in post production, I also spend some time on the sound track, unlike a majority of railway videographers (in my opinion). This includes working on the sound frequencies, in order to emphasize the sound of the locomotive exhaust beats, whilst trying to decrease all other sounds coming from the environment, unless they have a meaning on their own, such as in Eritrea and Bosnia, where I tried to also capture the sounds originating from the neighboring mosques. Or in Burma, the sound of the old lady sieving cane sugar seeds in the wind. In the past, I was also using a Rode mic, but I gave it up mostly because of the fragile fixture on the hot shoe of the camera. It broke twice and that was enough for me.

@@KochersbergTV thank you for explaining all that to me. There are times when I think that the RODE videomic doesn't eliminate enough wind noise even with the deadcat. I will look into the Zennheiser for a future possibility, if ever we can video again after this crazy time. And the result certainly shows in your post production of your sound. Having travelled the world extensively in the 70's and 80's I feel that I can imagine being in your shoes videoing your work and the great pleasure that you must have enjoyed filming all of your amazing footage in so many locations around the world. 230 tons on 1067mm/3'6" gauge. Absolute beast on those skinny tracks. Shame the performance is well down on what she was capable of with all the modifications working correctly and a crew that really knew how to make her fly, but still great to see.
