I'm not sure what can be done to save them. I am not that familiar with their operations, but in the US typically airlines try to counter their large, mostly seasonal intentional flights with a strong domestic backbone. SA doesn't seem to have that luxury. There aren't that many big cities in the country nor a ton of rich neighbors that want daily trade. Since the airline has gone into bankruptcy, the South African Government and Airbus (as the airline has an all Airbus fleet), would go for bankruptcy protection, so the airline can be re-structured. The first aircraft types to go would be the 16 A340-300/600s as they costly to operate, leaving the A330s and A350s to operate key medium to long haul services and A319/A320s for domestic and key short haul international services.

I remember SAA (Sally Ann) being one of the premier airlines flying into Heathrow. They had very well trained staff and had a very supportive clientele. Their aircraft included the B744-400 of which where kept in a very good state of maintenance . I then witnessed the change as positive discrimination took hold, it was an absolute disaster, with cabin crew taking a break at the same time with no one to serve the pax. Boarding pax ignored as they got onto the aircraft and a huge drop in pax satisfaction. It was the perfect storm of incompetent management and race over experience, the airline being looked upon as the Governments pet project rather than a well run airline. Your title is misleading I assume to encourage views, your research seems mostly accurate but there’s much more to it and by the 15th of December it appears anything but certain. As a South African working in aviation with friends working and flying at SAA I am of the opinion that she’ll be with us for some time yet although the dramatic “collapse” as outsiders keep referring to it is nothing new and is just another symptom of a nation desperately hanging on to viability and functionality after years of corruption and mismanagement...somehow though we South African soldier on and find a way, I truly believe SAA’s time has not yet come.

Its a very bad news SA airways going bankrupt and ultimately there will be no more services from SA. I wish it doesn't happen and comes out from this passe with flying colours.

Benyamin Philippines Sometimes planes get stuck, they don’t immediately leave. Sometimes like with Thomas Cook they keep flying but by another operator until the plane get repainted.
