They might need to sell 49.5% shares. A majority shareholder being "the people", keeps it safe. Qantas is a publicly listed company in Australia anyone can buy in, but "the people", via government, own 51%, that share can't be sold, the rest can be publicly traded, so it gets run like an independent business and one with public responsibility and commitment to the public that private businesses would not take on like unprofitable routes for example, like when Norfolk Airlines collapsed qantas took on the obligation to keep people and businesses connected.

Not only has SAA been put under business rescue administration but our metro rail service (PRASA) as well. The public rail service is currently one big abortion with trains being torched and set alight on a monthly basis for years now. South Africa is stuffed in every way possible. There are tons of raw sewage running into dams and water resevoirs, drinking water is longer safe to drink or even bath in. We are currently living under electricity blackouts ( load-shedding) of anything between two and a half hours to six hours per day. The word "maintenance" does not exist in our local black African languages.

I'm not sure what can be done to save them. I am not that familiar with their operations, but in the US typically airlines try to counter their large, mostly seasonal intentional flights with a strong domestic backbone. SA doesn't seem to have that luxury. There aren't that many big cities in the country nor a ton of rich neighbors that want daily trade. Maybe if they scaled back this would work, but that means a lot of layoffs.

One good thing about going into Business Rescue that the Board is shut out of the action, and that is WAY overdue. Since the airline has gone into bankruptcy, the South African Government and Airbus (as the airline has an all Airbus fleet), would go for bankruptcy protection, so the airline can be re-structured. The first aircraft types to go would be the 16 A340-300/600s as they costly to operate, leaving the A330s and A350s to operate key medium to long haul services and A319/A320s for domestic and key short haul international services.

I remember SAA (Sally Ann) being one of the premier airlines flying into Heathrow. They had very well trained staff and had a very supportive clientele. Their aircraft included the B744-400 of which where kept in a very good state of maintenance . I then witnessed the change as positive discrimination took hold, it was an absolute disaster, with cabin crew taking a break at the same time with no one to serve the pax. Boarding pax ignored as they got onto the aircraft and a huge drop in pax satisfaction. It was the perfect storm of incompetent management and race over experience, the airline being looked upon as the Governments pet project rather than a well run airline. Your title is misleading I assume to encourage views, your research seems mostly accurate but there’s much more to it and by the 15th of December it appears anything but certain. As a South African working in aviation with friends working and flying at SAA I am of the opinion that she’ll be with us for some time yet although the dramatic “collapse” as outsiders keep referring to it is nothing new and is just another symptom of a nation desperately hanging on to viability and functionality after years of corruption and mismanagement...somehow though we South African soldier on and find a way, I truly believe SAA’s time has not yet come.
