Bull riding is the only rodeo event that doesnt have its roots in ranch work. It was more of a "hold my beer and watch this" sort of thing.

That is not true. Bull riding originated in charreadas, contests of ranch and horsemanship skills that developed on the haciendas of Old Mexico. In the 16th Century.

As a reformed (retired) bull rider I can confirm we are both brave and stupid. You are correct we take a beating. But that love for doing it never dies, another part is the adrenaline side of it all and some get addicted and chase it for far to long. That is usually when bad things happen.

Amen Brother Lane was one of the great ones it's a shame that he passed on so early. His death shows just how dangerous these bulls actually are. I mean my God look at how bad the bull Bodacious was. I mean after all that bull didn't just try going after people he tried to kill people he wanted to kill people. When you get a bad boy like that you know that Rider is no matter how great they are like Lane Frost was , you're just taking a real good chance of being murdered by a bull. I mean oh heck yeah Lane Frost was a great great rider, and just a wonderful guy I mean he had great personality, he was a sweet and humble guy but when your time comes and the bad boys on the other end you don't have a chance. 😢😢🙏🙏🙏💔💔. R.I.P. Lane you were taken too early too soon from this life.

Back in the 1980s, my dad and I often watched rodeo on ESPN. There use to be a bull called Banana...or Bananas. That bull had horns, but they were floppy, thus the reason for the bull's name...looked like a couple of floppy large bananas on his head. It's a good thing that bull did have banana horns...he like to stay out in the arena and go after the rider, or the clowns...the horns were still kind of hard, just floppy and they could leave a bruise...but over all, a lot safer than the average bull's horns.

My city, like many in the West, has a annual rodeo. The animal rights people protest every year. What they don’t seem to realize is that these animals get treated like royalty. If they weren’t used for rodeos and breeding, they’d be hamburger.

Just because they are fed well, does not mean they are treated like "royalty." Do you really think they enjoy being hauled all over hell and back, having a bucking strap pulled across their flanks, a cowboy climb on top of them and gig the hell out of them with spurs, while the clowns and crowds taunt them? As soon as the bull breaks down or is no longer performing up to par, they are turned into hamburger. So much for being treated like "royalty."

Most of the bulls know their job when someone is on their back. The flank strap, which isn't around their balls, is another signal to buck riders off. You'll notice the bull calms after the strap is released. Bull fighters are heroes to those riders; they have learned the art of falling and truly put the rider's life over their own. One of the well known bullfighters, Jesse Byrne, is also a hockey player I believe. There's some great video on him.

I have some cousins who grew up riding bulls and now one of them breeds bucking bulls. My family has been in cattle ranching for a long time and that branch of my family continued doing it. It is an INTENSE process to breed those bulls. Their specialty is Plummer Bulls and they’re generally considered the most rank. The mamas are too mean to even raise a calf, so they have to implant the embryos in one of their regular angus cows. Crazy stuff.

Watch a video of the Saltgrass Trail rides to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. There is one online from 1974 that is amazing. I was a 9 year old kid and watched the Salt Grass Trail ride pass my house every February. It was literally 24 hs long. It would go into the night, thousands of riders, horses, and wagons. The Salt Grass Trail ride still goes on, but it's a different route (west of Hwy 290). We also had a Rodeo at our high school every Friday night. It was just as popular as the football games.

And they don’t begin to compare to the power of the American Bison, aka Buffalo. A single bison can jump over an 8ft fence… essentially straight up. They can easily outrun most horses and can total a vehicle, if they have the desire. I haven’t seen a cowboy yet, brave enough to even attempt to ride a Buffalo.

Just as a reminder, you, as the rider and the bull together, are a team. You're both judged by eachothers performance. It doesn't happen often, but occasionally, someone that holds on for a full 8 seconds will lose to someone who held on for 6. It's just as much about the performance as it is about simply holding on.

I am a native Texan. You talked about the bucking strap. It is put on horses and bulls. It is placed on them in the chute loosely, but when the animal is released, the strap is pulled and tightened. The animals buck because they are trying to get rid of that strap that is tight where the back legs attach to the body.

The "clowns" are there exclusivley for rider safety. Often a rider will "hang" (meaning his hand does not release from the bull rope.) When this happens the clowns sacrifice themselves to jump in and release the rope. And of course, they distract the bull away from buck'd off/hurt riders, etc. They suffer the same, if not more injuries, than do riders.

If no one’s told you yet that strap on the back of the bull is called the bucking strap where I grew up. It works by causing an irritation back where it is which makes the bull try to throw it off. Once you get past the irritation the bull is used to what happens and will buck like crazy just because it can. If you watch the videos a lot of the time once the rider is off and out of the way the bull will just trot back to the holding area cuz it knows it’s done for now.

I had a Miniature Lowline Black Angus bull ( they only grow to 40" high) named Carl ( I sold him so he could have some girlfriends). He was a very sweet and loved to rub on me and butt his head on me back. One day he hit me too low and he lifted me up in the air. I fell on his head (he was polled) and sat there until I jumped onto the fence. It was amazing how easily he picked me up by my butt; and he was just happily playing around. These bulls are 2-3 x's the size, have horns, and are purposely pissed off before letting them loose. If you have ever been on a mechanical bull you will know just 1/10 of the power a bull has to jump, kick, and twist their bodies. It's amazing they even get 2 seconds out of the gate.

For balance, you should watch some really great rides, when they stay on for the full eight seconds.

Ok great reaction fella's! Firstly the little guy Garrett i think i heard, would ride a small steer, or bull, and the stapbon tge bull is called the flank/strap or rope, and it doesn't cause the bull any pain!..from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸👋🤠

The bulls are super stars, sallyintucson is exactly correct the bulls are treated like royalty. Bushwacker a famous bull a few years ago was featured in Sports Illustrated as an outstanding athelete. They are worth hundred of thousands dollars and treated well because they are worth every dollar.

Hey Jono..."The Best Bull Rider of All Time: J.B. Mauney" is a great 13 minute video about his life and bull riding career that I think you would really like.

Congrats South Africa! from an American. I always think it's hilarious that sports fans from most countries that somehow or another evolved from England/UK love to see them lose 😂😂

I grew up on a farm and when we hosted the annual family reunion, us kids would try calf riding. No one ever got hurt except for bruises I expect.

If you are ever in bull riding territory in the US, Canada or Mexico, pay attention to anyone wearing a large belt buckle. THAT is someone who earned it in a rodeo by being better than all the crazy people in the rodeo
