South Dakota Pheasant Hunting 10-14-2023

Ace, Leah, & I got out for the opener of the SD Residents weekend on public land. It felt so great to be back out after 'em!

Wow Ace comes through yet again, he is a certified downed bird specialist, my first bird of the season, same thing but never found him with 2 good labs, hes probably still running. The great Ace chase," I'm not tired ,I'm winded" LOL

Really a nice video on what it is like to hunt with a a springer with some drive. I have had 2 springers and both were fun to hunt with. So many good memories of knowing my dog was on a running bird with the ability to hit the whistle and have my dog sit until i caught up with it. Released the dog again and continue this process until the dog kicked the bird up within shooting range, so much fun! Gotten older now and hunt behind a GSP, nice relaxing pace. Thanks for sharing your video with us.

He's my 3rd springer. He's only 4, so he's a handful sometimes. I'll try to keep up for now, but someday I'll have to train a whistle sit. Most of these birds won't wait. But for the time being, I'd rather see them & not get a shot, than never see them at all.

Oh, how I miss the good ol' days of hunting pheasants in Michigan with my 1st English Springer, 4 decades ago. She was simply a natural, and taught me so much about how to enjoy the sport. Love seeing Ace's tail wagging at 34:00, how they love to do what they were bred for! Thanks for sharing this. Great seeing how you kept him hydrated, too.

Very nice dog work, they say the Springer is the only dog for wild pheasants. Also like your choice of gauge, 16 is my favorite. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching. A field-bred springer definitely fits my style of hunting best, especially late season in snow & cattails. Early season, light cover they can be a challenge. Yes, they can be trained to "hup", but then in most cases (where I hunt) you'd never catch up to the bird. I'd rather see a pheasant & not get a shot at it, than never see it at all.

Right? And not because we need the bird so badly (although losing one is the pits), but because your dog has just done something amazing. For me, it's the biggest thrill in pheasant hunting.

It was. Probably early August, although I've shot them considerably younger than that even. And later in the season.

Boss 1 oz of bismuth 4s. That 2nd bird was a prime example of why I prefer 4s over 5s. It was a long-ish straight-away, laying there dead about 15 yds from where he fell. Took a little to find him, but I'll take that every time.

MOD. Sometimes FULL, although it's rare.

Boss, 16 ga, 1 oz bismuth, #4, 1350 fps. When I can shoot lead, it's typically Fiocchi (High Velocity, Optima Specific, Field Dynamics, which are all the same thing; NOT Golden Pheasant), 1-1/8 oz, #5, 1300 fps.

That’s a good sign, we found even adult hens didn’t re-nest in Illinois, as our habitat deteriorated.
