As a North Indian who lived in South India for 10 years, there is lack of awareness on both sides. While living in SI, I realized so many of our festivals have same meaning, same rituals etc. And then there are so many interesting differences. I have been asked questions that I never thought of in my life, which I think is a very healthy approach. I am back to North and I am irritated by the way people pronounce Dosa and keep correcting my family so I can imagine how much it irritates actual South Indians. 😂

This is not just about South Indians. Almost every ethnicity has been stereotyped in the past. For eg. Punjabis were always portrayed as comic and fools. If the character lastname is Malhotra or Singhania, they are shown as affluent. Most marathi people portrayed as kinda poor or lower middle class. Grew up in South India and because I went to a school for children of Navy servicemen, we had kids from every nook and corner of the country studying there. You had kids of every religion and every linguistic or ethnic community possible in the school from the kindergarten level upto 12th grade. I can honestly say that I never felt like the kids ever had any serious stereotypes about one another and generally respected each other's cultures and we ate at our friends' flats and celebrated festivals that didn't belong to our own communities. I guess we never learnt to see each other as 'the other' but as one country. Once my family left the military life and we became civilians... and I don't think social media alone is to blame for it. ...I noticed an exponential increase in bias and mockery from all sides. I really think that not only foreigners but also Indians grossly can't comprehend how big and diverse India is as a country. Statistically speaking, most Indians go without ever living among people who they don't share a common language or culture with. More than religion, it's language that divides us and people are either uncomfortable or afraid of leaving their homes to another state to start a new life which ends up breeding ignorance and intolerance. If more people started interacting and talking to one another, a lot of these prejudices would disappear and these trivial differences in eating or talking habits would cease to matter. People get too comfortable in their bubbles

Totally agree with you! But as a North Indian who worked in the South for 3 years, I think there are some ignorance towards north Indians as well. For example, calling every state North apart from the 4 south states, there’s apparently no concept of Central, Western, Eastern states. Or getting stereotyped to be from a place that has a lot of crime (I’m from Himachal, one of the most peaceful states). I was also asked if I’m from North East because people didn’t realise that Himachal is in the North. Also, I was judged quite often by people around me since they believed that North Indian girls lack moral values and culture because we dress a certain way. Ngl, South Indians must feel the same way when they are in North. I believe there should be more awareness among people to stop the stereotypes.

As a South Indian, I love some of these movies but Nirmal isn't wrong as well. I enjoyed the absurdity, especially in Ra One and Chennai Express. However, I do believe that there still needs to be some sort of effort in the way things are presented. I guess there should be an embrace in the "gray area". Like if they wanna make a comedy, maybe hiring South Indians to help out might make it feel less cringe and even more enjoyable. This isn't only for Bollywood making movies inspired by South Indians, this is for anything. Having people who lived that culture being a part of the team working in production really makes a difference. Like if you wanna shoot in Tamilnadu, having someone who knows amazing locations there makes it more authentic and enjoyable. Especially with scenes like Kashmir to Kanyakumari, where they're portraying Mohiniyattam and Kathakali, they could've hired Bharatanatyam dancers, Oyilattam dancers and Karagattam dancers. It's the subtle changes that makes a big difference. And again, I love these movies. And I don't think South Indians who comment on these things are actually offended. It's more of, "If this dish had more salt in it, it would taste even better"

Nirmal is right. The bollywood always shows Southern Indians like they are rascals or they are fools or they are like jungly or illiterate. But they are very patriotic and good. They respect their nation, culture and history. They preserve their own local culture and history like others do in India. Bollywood must write a letter to say Sorry in the best way possible with all the actors, actresses and producers. Because it is like Harrasment since the beginning of Bollywood. I am from Rajasthan. Love You All ❤

Each regional language mocks other regional languages (sometimes, not always). It happens even within the South. Case and point - Pushpa - Telugu mocking Tamil. This is not meant to be offensive or start a controversy. It is just meant to stir up the Josh of the local language audience (rightly or wrongly). The "Woke" will have a field day.

Great, now that guy should make a video about how South Indians portray North Indians in their movies, especially how Punjabis are portrayed. Let's balance this equation for once.
@t.s.p1864 Жыл бұрын
Even punjabis are not OK with the portrayal of all punjabis in punjabi movies. This is classic subtle subversion tactics to poison the mind and create hate among people. All punjabis are shown as lavish and rolls Royce and audi , but many many punjabis are very humble and down to earth people. This larger than life image of punjabis shown in movies and songs is bcoz of the Canadian dollar influence

I live in a foriegn land where there are indians from all states studying here. I ended up in a group with 80% north indians. And the amount of stuff I heard about south from north indians are just as bad as what you described. People have said directly to my face they think southies are dark and ugly. And north indians are superior cause they have fair skin. One even said dating a southie is a downgrade And this was tip of the iceberg. I heard so much such streotypical comments. So this isn’t a north south issue. This is an indian problem. We love discriminating against the minority no matter where we are. And coming to chennai express. If people see it as a movie I don’t mind. But there are idiots who think this is how south indians actually are and spew nonsense around.

'Coconut mein lassi milaake.." It is a metaphor to imply unity between North Indians (lassi) and South Indians (coconut). It does not literally mean South Indians mix lassi with coconut. Even if it did, Rahul is a North Indian and canonically, he is asking EVERYONE (especially North Indians) to do it, not just South Indians. South Indians in South Indian movies like Asuran, Vada Chennai, Pushpa, Rangasthalam, Shyam Singha Roy, Super Deluxe, Vikram, Kaithi are portrayed as vicious criminals, murderers, repists, psychopaths, gangsters, drug lords but that does not stereotype all South Indians but a movie where most of the jokes are made at the expense of cultural ignorance and immaturity of Rahul who grows by the end of the movie and comes to respect Meenamma, her family and her village stereotypes South Indians even though South Indian characters after every 30 seconds in South Indian movies pull up lungi and tie it like shorts before doing something badass. The song Titli starts with praising Ranganatha in Tamil and portrays simple village folk going about their lives. But somehow South Indians are offended by this movie and Lungi dance. Get a grip, you insecure fools! Are you also offended by the temple ritual of husbands carrying their wives? Why don't you make dhoti dance or roti dance since you prefer rice? No North Indian will be offended by it. Mainstream South Indian masala movies stereotype and make more fun of South Indians than Chennai Express allegedly did. 💀 Lungi dance is featured in most of the songs from mainstream South Indian masala movies in which the male heroes almost always tie up their lungis in badass moments. Songs like Kashmir Main Tu Kaniyakumari, Titli from Chennai Express CELEBRATE the shared South Indian culture, dance forms, food, traditions, rituals, attire. Lungi Dance from Chennai Express CELEBRATES the garment. It is not a prop or a caricature. How can South Indians be offended by Lungi Dance? Dafuq 💀
